I really really want a yellow XR.
I got an XS Max on Saturday, but honestly, if I go and see an XR, I have a feeling I’d end up buying one! They look so so cool.

I too wish the screen was just that little bit better, but that’s only because I’m used to the X / XS screen now and it’s easily one of the best displays I’ve ever used.

Still, I love the look of this XR and am sorely tempted!

Thats because you're looking for a technical explanation whilst he's/she's making a perception argument which is more subjective.

It's a ridiculous "perception" argument.

By that logic, a user covering half their smartphone display with their hand would get a better experience, because the PPI is somehow better on a smaller display area.

PPI is PPI. The viewing distance doesn't change by any appreciable amount whether the display is 4", 4.7", or 6.1"

The same sharpness users experienced on a 4.7" display carries over to the 6.1" XR.

I'm guessing he's a plus user who has never really liked 326PPI so dealing with that on a bigger display is an issue.

I dunno though

Even without an actual technical explanation: what's the logic behind the assertion that smaller screens look better than larger ones, at the same pixel density? I'd like to hear it. Someone must have a rationale behind this thinking. It's not the first time I've heard it.

Yeah, my gut (and brain) say you're absolutely correct. The premise sounds highly suspect to me. But as noted above: I'd like to see an explanation from someone who believes in this phenomenon.

honest question - without snark - can one really tell the difference between 720 and 1080 on a phone-sized screen?
First, the XR is not 720p. It's 828p.
Second, that per se doesn't matter anyway. It's not about 720p, 828p, or 1080p. It's all about pixel density.

The XR screen is a 326 ppi screen, which is the exact same as the iPhone 8, but significantly lower than the 401 ppi of the iPhone 8 Plus. Can we tell the difference? Yes, for sure some of us can. However, some can't, and moreover, not everyone who can tell the difference necessarily really cares all that much.

After using the 401 ppi 7 Plus for a couple of years, I think I might miss such a screen if I went back to a 326 ppi screen like the iPhone 8 or XR, but for my wife, she's been using a 326 ppi 6s all along with no complaints and wants a bigger iPhone, so the XR upgrade is a perfect fit for her.

However, if you want to get an impression of what the quality of the XR screen will be like, take a look at the pix below. I posted about it here as well.

IMG_2176.jpg

iPhone 8 with 326 ppi screen on the left. iPhone 8 Plus with 401 ppi screen on the right. The way the picture was taken above, it's hard to see much difference in the font quality. This would be analogous to holding your phone at 18 inches away from your face. 326 ppi like on the XR would look pretty decent.

IMG_2177.jpg

Even closer up, the quality of the screen on the left looks pretty good in comparison to the one on the right.

However, click on the picture to zoom in. Look at the "v" in the word "very" just above the blue text on the right side. Look at how smooth it looks when blown up. In contrast, look at the "v" in the word "over" three lines down from the blue text on the left. It looks quite jagged when blown up like that.

In order to see such obvious jagginess you'd have to hold the phone just a few inches from your face, which of course few people actually do.

However, what about at say about 11 inches? At that distance I can see an improvement in text quality of the 401 ppi screen (right) over the 326 ppi screen (left). I don't really see the jaggies, but what I see is soft edges around the text. It makes the text just a bit blurry, whereas on the higher pixel density screen it looks very crisp.

So yes, the 401 ppi screen of the Plus is perceptibly better, but it's not obvious to everyone. If they like the iPhone 8 screen, then they will like the XR screen.

---

BTW, that argument that 326 ppi looks worse on a bigger screen makes no sense at all. It will look the same, at the same distance. If anything, the reverse can be true. For some content, a bigger screen allows one to put the screen further away, making the lower pixel density even less of a concern. This is why MacBook Pro 13" screens are 227 ppi and iMac 5K screens are 218 ppi, yet still look excellent.

I was going to get it until I saw the price and the fact it’s a rather big device. I chose the iPhone 8 and am due to get it tomorrow.

Good to see you finally found a phone in your budget. Enjoy your 8, especially since it will feel like a huge upgrade over the 6S.

If it wasn't for America's BOGO deals, I wouldn't even have a 2018 iPhone.

I got iPhone XS but my wife will be getting XR.

The biggest influencer is the size. We are replacing iPhone 7 Plus, which is roughly the same size as iPhone XS Max. While we love the screen, we both wish the phone was a bit smaller (mainly narrower).

Looking at XS and XR side-by-side, the difference is noticeable but not as dramatic as XS to XS Max. On the other hand, XR has the same screen real estate as XS Max (that is, if you open the same website or app on both phones, they will show equal amount of information).

As much I am pleased with XS, I wish I can see a bit more.

Secondly, for only $50 more, my wife can upgrade from 64 GB to 128 GB capacity. And almost all of her photos and videos are shot at 1x, so double rear lens will not be missed.

I am currently looking at the XR for me and my wife. We currently have the 5S so anything would be a major upgrade. She has been wanting a bigger screen for quite sometime. For me, it's not that big of a deal. I'm a little concerned about the size of the XR. I want something that will fit comfortably in my pants pocket. I don't want a huge phone to deal with.

October 26 in North America

Too bad because it would be nice to compare to my XS Max even though I am content with what I have. I just wanted to see how good Apple's $750 model could be.

Hubs and I have 7’s coming off payment next month. I’m getting the XR (not feeling the colors so I’ll probably go with white or black) but he’s keeping the 7. He doesn’t care about having the newest phone like I do so he’s happy to ride it out and take my XR in 2 years.

Now I’m just hoping to get more than $200 for my trade but it doesn’t seem likely.

Maybe carriers could have offers. I know T-Mobile was offering about $200-$300 for some iPhones recently. Not sure who your carrier is though. Check the Apple trade in program, Gamestop (they give cash and I got more than T-Mobile's or Costco's quotes), Gazelle, Swappa, eBay, LetGo, and others. Might want to see if a friend would buy it off you for $200?

I’m hoping for better carrier trade in and switching deals when the XR launches.

I’m sure they all know what’s been reported - that Apple expects more than 50% of all new phone sales this year to be of the Xr variety.

Despite all the buzz that the Xs and max has gotten since launch day, the Xr is going to make a lot more noise.

My wife is on a 6s, and she's getting the XR. I'm on a 7 Plus, and I'm getting nothing. I want the XS Max, but don't feel like handing over my first born for one. The thing is, 64 GB is too little, but 256 GB is too much. 128 GB is the sweet spot but that's not an option.

I did go to the Apple Store to check out the XS Max though. It turns out in real world usage it's only marginally faster. The thing I use my 7 Plus the most for is internet access, but the bottleneck there isn't the CPU. It's the internet access speed and the website server speed. So, that leaves two things I like about the XS Max that would be an upgrade for me: 1) More vertical screen space, and 2) Better camera.

Not worth CAD$1954 (with tax). That's the price of a MacBook BTW.

Why? IF all 3 had been available at launch, many buyers would have gone for the XR to save some money. Once they have given people a chance at the more expensive phones, then they will bring in the cheaper XR. Same reason they don’t offer product red at launch. More sales down the line once the hype has died down.

So because someone can’t afford an xs/max, the prices are stupid?

I was thinking more so that I thought they'd drop the iPhone XR launch first in September and then hold the iPhone XS and XS Max for a November launch, similar to how they did the iPhone 8 first and then released the iPhone X later that year.

I’m with Verizon and got spoiled with the $650 trade-in when I upgraded 2 years ago.
I might just keep the 7 as a backup if I’m not going to get a ton for it. Or sell it to my sister if she wants a slight upgrade from her 6s.

If you think about it though the XR is the most anticipated iPhone this year and has got the most interest over the past few months. If they had have released it first, it would have deterred people from waiting for the more expensive models. Apple have structured the releases to maximise profits I would say.

Yeah I think I was always going to buy last years device to be honest. I waited on the XR for curiosity and if it had been £50 cheaper I probably would have got it. It’s reassuring though to see performance isn’t changing a great deal year on year and a phone seems to last longer than it used to on this basis. We certainly don’t get the kind of deals you guys get in the States that’s for sure! I could have got an XS in my preferred price range but that would be on a 3 year contract. I’m never comfortable owning a device for an extra year out of warranty personally.

I’m wondering if the single large XR size is intentional to drive upgrades to XS.
[doublepost=1537807086][/doublepost]

I think the single large “budget” size was intentional to drive profitable upgrades.
Totally agree. I imagine they have their intelligence which suggests that the x is the sweetspot in terms of size therefore making a cheaper one that is too big for most will probably persuade them to spend another couple of hundred on the one they really want. When spending an absurd £799, what’s another £200?

Classic Apple, really, but fantastic business.

I wouldn’t even dream of it when there’s better phones for cheaper. 720p screen? You can’t even convince me even if it was free.
