It's not the bezels. The display's just small.

The mini 6's display is around 32 sq. in. Meanwhile, the iPad Pro 11's display is around 57 sq in. That's almost double the display area of the mini.

The iPhone GUI is optimized for the smaller displays but the iPad GUI is more optimized for ~10" or larger.
yes good point! it does make you squint a bit... my son has the prior version and it doesnt look so cramped for some reason??

I loved the 6, with all the upgrades, it's probably the second most powerful iPad, after the two Pros. (and no, I did not notice any jelly) But for me and my uses, 256GB just wasn't enough storage. And I'm surprised that is the one thing they didn't upgrade from the 5. Even the iPhone Mini 13 has 512GB.

I also had a 12.9, but I decided I did not want more than one iPad, so I sold the 12.9 and returned the 6, and I have an 11 now. The 11 isn't that much bigger or heavier than the 6, but still has all the power of the 12.9.

I compared a mini 4 and mini 6 side by side and the mini 4 looks just as cramped to me.

I was actually surprised to see that in practice, the smaller width (in portrait)/height (in landscape) didn't make as big a difference as I thought it might with content more suited to the older 4:3 aspect ratio.

Even if I could force myself to get used to the jelly scroll, I honestly can’t justify the price. If they bumped up the storage and the scan skew was not quite so jarring, I could… but as it is, I can’t. I really wanted cellular this time around, but 64gb just seems too low even for me, especially when the OS and system data together take up about 11-12gb by themselves.

Unfortunately, unlike others in this thread, I can’t just supplement with a bigger ipad. It was this or nothing. This form factor and design is perfect. There’s also the fact that the ipad is a purely luxury device for me.

When the mini goes up on the refurbished store with a $100-200 discount, then it might be at a reasonable price for extra storage and cellular. Worst comes to worst, I’ll have to wait until the next model or revision when the jelly scroll is not so prominent.

Would a Mini 5 work for you?

So I said in another thread that I was returning my Mini. I haven’t yet, and this week I’ve just tried to use it normally without reading too much into other peoples issues.

FWIW, I don’t have jelly scroll, or at least I can’t see it.
so it’s not that which is an issue for me. It’s just the screen itself that seemed really poor.

I plover the size of this thing, but using it is still a bit frustrating. Mainly due to the scaled down aspect. It’s almost like everything is too small for the screen due to it being a shrunken down iPad 11”.
I keep mis-tapping things. I watch a lot of YT and I can’t see, to hit the scrub to move the video along or back it just keeps disappearing when I try to hit it. Very frustrating. The wasted space along the left and right side of the Home Screen is also really annoying. It just feels like wasted space.

So I think I will be returning it. But I also think I’ll miss it but I can’t get past the scaled down feel which I believe ipad OS 15 has also had some impact on.

Understandable, I see some of the same things. I've noticed that they really did design it to be held in landscape as the UI actually looks and works better in that orientation. They really did makes some odd choices for the Mini this time around, but I can adjust to it.

I wished they put the power button on a side rather than the top though...

I'm forcing myself to like it which shouldn't really be the case. Don't get me wrong, there's elements of it I do really like. The size and build is top notch as expected. But I can't get past the user experience which is lacking for me with how fiddly it all feels.

I ordered Mini 6 256GB but pulled out in the last minute and ordered iPad Pro 11" 128GB instead. Only $85 difference. The Mini is way overhyped in my country so resellers charge a a stupidly high price.

Jelly scrolling isn't an issue for me because I use the landscape mode 90% of the time.

I’m keeping mine. As a mini 5 owner I was reluctant at first, mostly because I wasn’t sure if I would benefit from the upgrades. So I waited a week, watched the reviews and then picked one up on Thursday.

I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked the new design. In videos the bezels look large but in person they are fine. It’s very comfortable in the hand and so easy to type on in portrait mode. Lovely for watching videos on as there are less black bars on the top and bottom of the screen and I really enjoy the new speakers. They are much better than the 5.

Touch ID on the power button has not really been an issue. This is because of the guide that tells you where the power button is no matter what orientation the iPad is in. Accuracy is close to 100%.

I also like the fact that the volume buttons change depending on what orientation the device is in. It’s always logical and makes sense!

I’ve always been one to go for features over design/appearance. So I don’t tend to upgrade for a design change alone. However I do appreciate the new form factor now that I actually have it in my hands. I was the same with the iPhone X and the iPad Pro 11. Didn’t think much of the design on paper but when I actually got the devices I could appreciate them and decided that they did improve my overall experience.

Yes, Touch ID on the Mini 6 worked perfectly. Rarely had to do a "re-do".

No jelly scrolling on mine. And before people say it’s my eyes every member of my family can’t see it either. It’s a great tablet. Just wish it came 128 base.

I see it differently. My iPad mini supplements my MacBook Pro, not another iPad. The distinction is fairly easy to me. If I need to do real work, it’s the Mac. If I’m just lounging around reading or playing, it’s the iPad.

I see you have 2 Macs, whats the need for a more serious iPad too?

You didn’t ask me but for me it is about comfort, holding a device for that many hours a day while watching YouTube, reading, browsing and so on isn’t ergonomic enough to work long term. So most of my lounging, typing on forums and such needs to be done without holding the device. And Mac OS (like Windows) really is a poor experience for consumption.

Anything less than 12.9 feels small to me and all the other iPad displays don’t hold a candle to the MiniLED HDR experience provided by 12.9. The 12.9 display is in another class altogether. The jelly scrolling was just the cherry on top.

Couldn’t manage the size of the 12.9 but the M1 iPad has the best display for sure.

I think you misunderstand. Several others in this thread have went ahead and gotten an ipad/air/pro in place of the mini 6, but I’m saying I won’t be able to do that and will be left ipadless because I only want it in the mini + modern form factor.

My ipad mini would mainly be an e-reader/gaming device and useful for travel. As an aspiring web developer, I definitely have no need for a serious ipad (hence why I said it was a luxury device), but I’d still like one cause I’m sick of having to read and game on such a tiny screen.

I returned my mini 6. Disliked the screen and cramped feeling of it. Only get this if you like the form factor otherwise my iPad Pro 10.5 was better in screen.
As for the jelly scroll, again it didn’t bother me. I got the iPad Pro 11 and guess what, this iPad has the jelly scroll too. Lol. Not as bad but when you train your eyes what to look for you will notice it.
