What do you want a citation for, that our display technology in these products don’t update every pixel at the same time and instead does it from one side to another? Or that photons from our screens don’t time travel?
just did

Every iPad mini has it whether you see or don't
The above. "Every iPad mini has it whether you see it or don't"

Well, Tiggr, I don't see it, and I'm fine. (But don't ask Rabbit. He's already at his wits end over the whole thing, and I don't think he can take any more. Owl was envious that he didn't have one yet. (He's still got a gen-1) Eeore? He still has a RocketBook from nearly 15 years ago)

Yeah, my question still stands. Which one of the things I said do you want a citation for? Because if those 2 things are both true it will be on every mini and every LCD, the only question is how noticeable the effect is.
The claim was made that every iPad mini has it.

How come this has only come to the fore now? And now you yourself have ignored the claim and said every LCD has it.

Which is it? Every iPad Mini or every LCD Device?

It would be nice if people just stopped dancing around and just provided a citation when requested.

All the posts I’ve read so far (including here at MR which quilted Ars technical) contain “Apple stated” but I’ve yet to read anywhere of what Apple ACTUALLY stated.

The issue is evident right here: You yourself can’t seem to decide if this is an iPad Mini issue or is it an issue with all LCDs. And we’re not talking how LCDs are rendered, but the “Jelly effect”.

I finally made it to an Apple store and got my first in person look at the mini 6. I enjoyed the new look. I couldn't see the jelly effect. I think that is because my eyes are not very good at tracking moving text.

My biggest use for the mini is looking at PDF documents in landscape mode. Because the mini 6 is a little wider in landscape mode. the text is just a little bit bigger and a little easier to read. As a result, a little bit less fits vertically on the page, but I think its worth it.

So I bought it, and I'm going to use my 14 day return period to try it out. Honestly, I didn't need to upgrade, my mini 5 was doing fine (albeit with some cosmetic damage and low-volume speakers). But I am enjoying using the mini 6 so far.

I'm a mini fan in general; I think I've owned every model since the first one.

This is a function of how LCD screens are made, it is there on every screen. Therefore I am asking you what do you want a citation for, how screens are made or or that the light from the screen flows in one direction of time? If you update one part of the screen before another while scrolling it produces a jelly effect and this is how we make screens.

It is such a buzz with the Mini 6 because they update it in the shortest dimension meaning the scanout speed is lower to meet the 60 Hz refresh rate. As well as increasing the tracking distance possible and the incline of the curve which all means it is more noticeable. But scan skew testing has been a part of any proper display testing for a long time because it is there on all of them.

That's a manufacturing defect. Mine doesn't have that problem and plenty of others have said the same thing. You should just get it replaced with a defect free iPad.

Mine is going back. I love the form factor and new design. However when I compare it to my FOLD 3, the overall functionality and display of the fold wins. Sure there is a steep price difference but it’s just too redundant for two have both devices in the way I use them. I would rather carry around my Fold 3(secondary device) compared to the mini. I think I’ll cave and put that returned money into an iPad Pro 12.9.

I returned mine for the iPad Pro 11 inch (256gb/Cellular). While I loved the form factor of the mini, I couldn’t get past the screen issues and weird scaling. It’s hard to go back from a Pro Motion screen.

I found the 11 wasn't that much bigger or heavier than the Mini 6. A small portable iPad, with all the power of the 12.9.

Exactly. I previously had a 2018 iPad Pro 12.9 inch. While I loved the screen real estate. It was just too big to use outside the Smart Keyboard folio. The 11 inch (combined with the awesome Magic Keyboard) is the best of both worlds.

Returned gorgeous purple backed 256GB cellular £759 (over $1000) in favour of existing Mini 5 as:
Screen is washed out (jelly belly is no issue)
5G may appear fast in speed tests but in reality doesn’t matter on a consumer device. Servers seem to determine efficiency. My EE 4G in london is 250+.
MMWave no issue
No benefit to height over width.
Plug-in charging aside, pencil 1 is no hinderance.
Pencil 2 lags occasionally in Procreate on Mini 6.
Speakers are great but we’ll be using earphones. Battery life is inferior to 5.
iPad processor speed has been great for years and ‘Pro Apps’ work no better on the 6.
The bezels are thicker than sides on mini 5.
We only bought it because shipping dates were moving back and FOMO set in.

Hmm...

It hasn't been exactly nice since I received it.

I got it on the Big Friday along with so many others, and figured I'd set it up on Saturday. It went off the rails from the start. I set it up as 'New', to avoid the Music Bug I'd read mentioned, and it seemed to go well. Then I tried to setup my iCloud email. And things went sideways and got stuck in a ditch. I kept getting the setup for Mail circling around on the Verify bit. I restored it twice, and finally texted Apple Support. A half hour into that and they said it would have to be escalated, and someone would have to call me. I waited a couple of minutes and the phone rang, and I was talking to someone who had no clue what was going on, but got up to speed quickly, and remoted in to the Mini. We did a number of things, and even power cycled it a few times, and nothing worked. He remoted in to my iPhone and saw how it was setup, and then into my MBP the Mini was connected to, and then back to the Mini. We restored it again, and tried some other things. We restored it again, and tried something else. Eventually, after spending over 2 hours on it, it was setup and I was receiving/sending email.

Then he offered me a 'gift' for my trouble. An iPhone battery pack. I don't have an iPhone that it would work on, so I suggested a 'Smart Folio' for the Mini. He couldn't send that for some reason. Then he suggested an Apple Pencil, which is close to twice the (retail) price. So I have another Apple Pencil (three if I ever find the wayward one) and got the 'case' from Amazon later in the week.

But it was a strange and kinda weird issue. I've never had that much trouble getting iCloud email to setup before. And Apple support gifts? And no to the 'Smart Folio'? Is the margin that slim on that, and that large on the Pencil? It just seemed strange...

The TiMOVO case is pretty awesome. It has an actual tray for the Pencil to hide in, rather than the flappy rubber bit on the Otterbox case I have for the IPP. That flappy bit drives me crazy, BTW... (Wondering what Otterbox comes up with for the Mini. Hopefully no 'flappy bit')

BUT: Back to the setup issue. I can only assume that it's an ipadOS issue. Has anyone else had that happen? I was wondering if some traps from the previous attempt survived the restore process. I wouldn't also think it was my account that caused the issue, but who knows. Haven't seen the scrolling issue, but just read books and mail on it, so far.
Mine has not been nice, either. On Saturday morning every single app I opened immediately crashed. I shut it down to reboot it, and the first time it got stuck on the skinny lines. I restarted it again and this time it went to the apple logo with no status bar, and would progress no further. We tried updating/restoring it from a computer, but kept getting a message to the effect of "there is no software available for this iPad". After a couple hours of this they then had me take it in to the closest apple store, which was mall crazy on a Saturday afternoon. 6 of their computers (and 2.5 hours) later, and also escalated up to their head Genius/Tech support manager, they said there was nothing they could do for me. They suggested I bring it back every day until they got a software update that would recognize the iPad. Unacceptable. I contacted Apple support/Applecare. I am currently waiting on the replacement that was supposed to be here yesterday, finally shipped Monday, updated delivery today by 8PM. We shall see, as the Fedex flight just landed here at 6:20 PM. No gift offered to me.

The other thing I found interesting is nobody seemed familiar with the new iPad mini design at all, and they were actually surprised I had one.

As far as battery life, it was fully charged when it crashed Saturday morning at 8 AM, and the battery lasted until 6 AM Sunday morning before the screen finally went dark. I was unable to turn it off.

The least surprising part of the story is "ineptitude at the Apple Store"

Man - I hate those places now.
They are such a screaming far cry from how cool and fun they were a decade + ago.

Sounds like the FW was corrupted requiring the correct Device Firmware Update on the server to do that. There are usually two ways to do this a reset to last OS FW (save data) or a reset to factory settings (wipe everything). One would think they are prepared for DFU to brand new iPads, but I don't want to guess that status. Reminds me of what happen to users that thought they could just do a clean install of a M1 Mac when they first came out, bricked until it was DFU restored. Hope your next one is problem free. :)

Exactly the same for me. I was coming from a 2017 10.5 ipad pro. Returned the mini 6 for an ipad pro 11.

Pro Motion makes a big difference. Once you get used to it, especially in bigger screens like in tablets, without it the experience isn't the same.

I found the opposite, the 11" Pro sits unused since I got my new Mini. It's way too heavy for what I want. If I could sell it with no hassle I would. (It's not the new 11", but a 2018 I think) I'll probably end up giving it away to family.

I have had that happen before. I was surprised, and didn't know if it was gas lighting, flattery, or honest ignorance of the 'new hotness'. I found all of it rather annoying, as the 'genius' proceeded to examine every square millimeter of the device and ooo and ah over it. He said he had 'never seen one in person yet', even though it was currently for sale. I assumed that there was some kind of memo regarding the new hotness, and maybe this person skipped it, OR they were searching for a way to deny helping me. I was left wondering as to their motive.
