I like the way OnePlus has the option to turn it on or off. When it’s set to off the top of the screen around the notches turn black so the notch blends in more. In the black areas it still shows the icons like battery, WiFi, time.... so the space is still usable.

That's a really cool option and I really do hope Apple adds this!

I tried that on my OnePlus, but it just bothered me with the top bezel being twice the size of the bottom. Just looks like the phone is upside down.

That people like it both ways and if the option were there, the choice of one group wouldn't affect the choice of the other group, but everyone would be able pick what suited them at any given time.

Never said anything to the contrary. Just stating that to me, the notch hiding solution just made it look worse to me.

The holy grail of modern phone design is bezelless and notchless with in-screen sensors.

Vivo Nex is closer in that direction with in-screen fingerprint but the first company to embed other sensors in-screen will be king.

Notch is just lazy fugly design engineering.

It's largely a design thing to go with the notch. Without it, they would either have a larger top of the phone or a chin also on the bottom to balance it out kind of like Samsung has on the S8/S9. Chin only on the bottom like on the Xiami Mi Mix 2S looks less offensive but poses some problems with sensor and camera placement.

So for Apple the notch makes sense as they can have what appears like a fullscreen display and it follows the rounded corners of the device. They could have hidden it by having the "ears" have a black background and rounded corners on the screen underneath but I think that might throw the design off balance as well.

This mockup illustrates the issue. The first one looks ok and could have been an option but again gives the impression of a chin on top. The second one is a no go and the third is what we got and it certainly works best as a design.

The notch is an imperfect solution to having lots of sensors on the front while having a full body display. Maybe in the future they can combine those sensors closer together to reduce the size of the notch or hide them completely by putting them behind the display. I don't see it happening in the next few years though.
