Iconic to you maybe, but many rather not have the notch (if they can help it :) )

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ better than the alternative. This is hideous... and likely prone to mechanical failure.

So they can remove the notch and profit again on the next iteration.

yes. REALLY want the tech to allow apple to profitably market new, better devices that all those sensors and cameras to under/embedded into the screen.
i am hoping for 2020 models...

I think it's because they wanted to be truly edge-to-edge, they noted that they were the first to come up with the folded-under screen design that allowed for removal of the 'chin' as seen on other phones, and I think they wanted to make it look properly edge to edge, with a notch for the cameras, rather than having a 'forehead'.

I'm ok with the notch - it gives you ears for status info, providing a little more active space for the apps below. Also the little peek of screen going fully top to bottom helps to provide some symmetry. I think if they added a thin top bezel all the way across, it would have felt more unbalanced

If you actually prefer a notch over a fully bezeless display then you have terrible taste. Even the biggest Apple fanboy will admit having no bezel at all is the endgame here.

I don’t think it’s right for you to attack another posters taste, if he prefers the notch over a bezel and chin that’s his prerogative. who are you to say otherwise?

“Apple fanboy” you mean macrumor users?, you seem angry for no reason at all.

Were you interested in the iPhone X’s max over your note?

To differentiate themselves from the rest and to have ammunition for future frivolous lawsuits in case other large manufacturers start copying the notch. Also Apple too could get sued if they removed the fingerprint reader and just made the iPhone to look too much like the Samsung S9.

Also in the future they will just add the bezels back and make everyone switch to the new phone for 1500 dollars.

The notch is gross. A small bezel would look much better. And I have several Apps where part of the UI is missing inside the notch. Yes - I know that is an issue with the App developer that could be fixed, but my point is it that it hasn't been fixed (after more than a year) on many of the apps that I use every day.

This is a big reason why I am an "S year" upgrader, where I expect all of the app kinks to have been worked out for the new hardware. Very disappointing that isn't the case at this late point.

Do your problem apps tend to be abandoned - not having had upgrades in a while?

This thread looks just like the threads from last year. Some people have used it and don't notice the notch. Some of those people thought that it would bug them, but are surprised to find out it just fades into the background. They're happy with their new purchase.

The next group hates it because it looks awful and a multitude of other reasons. When digging deep enough, most of these people (not all) have seen it, maybe played with it in the store, but have no real life experience. They're going strictly off what they can observe with their eyes. This is also where you find those who are just kicking up dust for sport by poking at Apples users, those who can't afford it, those who stubbornly hold on to the past and a variety of other reasons. But this group seems to mostly be those without the experience to understand how it fades away or those with no intention of ever getting one.

Finally you have a third group. Much smaller. They're the ones who have played with it for a day or two, a week, sometimes months. And they still hate the notch.

This thread is playing out exactly like multiple threads did last year. Although this year the Notch has a whole new batch of converts since we're getting a bunch of people who didn't upgrade last year and are now getting new phones.

The notch slept with my wife last year, that's why I went with the 8+. We worked it out, though.

Sure it would. Where would the time, battery life, signal, etc go? Most people are using the phone to read most of the time. Video and photos are a small percentage of usage.

You’re not even comprehending what I’m typing.

A larger box is more area than a smaller box. Period. End of story.

I doubt the notch will go away for a long time. They could have significantly reduced the bezel on the last design but they didn’t because that’s what made the iPhone recognizable around the world…tell someone to draw a cell phone and they’ll most likely draw the iconic outline of the iPhone. In the same way Apple associated the notch on purpose with the new version and others copy it because they want to be associated with a premium product (or at least the premium price). When someone figures out how to embed or put all that stuff behind the display I still doubt Apple will change unless there’s a clear advantage and they can differentiate somehow. There’s zero advantage making an iPhone indistinguishable from everything else on the market because then it wouldn't be recognizable anymore and it would kill the brand. Love the notch or hate it, the notch is there for a reason and most people don't care.

Ah. I see. I thought you were on the side of a thin bezel instead of the notch. All screen is just not possible until all of those cameras can go behind the screen. I agree though, all screen (no bezels) would be the best option. Having said that, given the choice between the notch or a bezel, I will take the notch any day of the week because I see it adding to screen space by moving persistent info off the main screen.

Nope. You lose more vertical screen space with notch. Why? Simple. With the notch, the status bar is now TWICE the height compared android/galaxy.

Cuz then it would look like a Samsung instead of what the case is now when 90% of droids look like a iPhone.

I think it's less about being able to display icons in the upper corners and more about being able to run all 4 corners of the screen right out to the 4 rounded corners of the case so that aesthetically it tricks the eye and gives a more powerful impression of the screen covering the whole front of the device. It's obviously both but I think consideration 1 for the Apple design team was to create that visual design trick with consideration 2 being the consequent ability to use the ears for icons. The 2 considerations are synergistic, putting content into the ears enhances the visual trick.

I suspect that in the next iteration the notch might shrink at least in width if not in depth which would be nice to allow more to be packed into those ears. Removing the visible speaker should be possible, Sony's 2017 W7 OLED TV used in-screen speaker technology for full-room TV sound so the technology would definitely seem to be there to knock about 8mm off the width of the notch by implementing an in-screen speaker thus adding about 4mm to each ear (another icon each side). It would be a worthwhile change in my opinion.

I also wonder whether the remaining notch stuff could be pushed up a bit to use some of the space in the lip above the screen rather than being centred in the notch space. Maybe that is more tricky because that lip might need to be kept away from to ensure full integrity of all the IP68 seals but Apple knows what's what with all these issues so I am sure has been looking at what manufacturing/design options are available that might allow the sensors to be shuffled up even a mm.

I'd rather a notch than a bezel. At least they can build the battery/wifi etc into the notch. Otherwise they'd have to have a bezel, and then the top bar, essentially doubling up on wasted screen real estate when they could just compact it like they have now.
