I'm sure that Tim Cook just really wanted to see Jon Prosser shave his eyebrows, so he pushed back the event. :p

Hate to say I told you so, but I told you so. Apple wont be releasing iPad Pros at WWDC either, its on a 2 year update cycle and that's 2022. Cant wait to see Proser shave those eyebrows!
You realize they can just host an event in April, right...? Most every relevant news source has these pinned for release within the next couple of months.

“If it’s not March 23 it’s 2022” must be some sort of logical fallacy

But somehow you were able to say it ☺️

Im still hopeful we will see a new iPad fairly soon. Hopefully you’re wrong that it will be 2022. I need/want 5G, waiting another year for it is not an acceptable choice

He is wrong! He has no clue and he is just being an .... you know what. :)
Its delusional to think that there won't be an iPad Pro in 2021 especially after what happened in 2020. Its borderline mental to think that 2018 tech would not get updated in 2021 whilst Air is already on proper 2020 tech. (A12 vs A14)

So don't worry, you will be fine.

So Kuo is now saying the mini LED 12.9” won’t enter mass production until mid to late April. If it’s mid April maybe we’ll see an April announcement and the 12.9” will just be in limited supply. But if it’s late April I don’t think we’ll see it announced until WWDC.

If we look at the data, here is how long each iPad Pro was the flagship before it was replaced:

12.9” Gen 1: 19 Months
9.7”: 15 months
12.9” Gen 2 & 10.5”: 16 months
12.9” Gen 3 & 11” Gen 1: 17 months

All of these happened in March or October with the exception of the 12.9 Gen 2 and 10.5” which were announced at WWDC. We can also extrapolate that iPad Pro models spend on average 16-17 months as the flagship. 16 months would put us at July but we know WWDC is in June and Apple has never held two Summer events.

As others have pointed out the 2018 refresh was really short-changed. All we got was a higher binned A12X with an extra GPU core and 6GB of RAM across the board. The last time an upgrade was felt as ‘short changed’ was the 9.7” Pro when they basically took the iPad Air 2 and threw in a faster CPU and pencil support. Everything else was identical to the Air 2 if memory serves. That product was on sale for 15 months, announced in March 2016 and discontinued when the 10.5” came out in June 2017 at WWDC.

The current iPad Pros came out in March 2020. So it would stand to logic and reason that if the 2021 model was not released in March the next possible event would be WWDC in June, or exactly 15 months after release of the last one.

We have both iPad Air 2 and Pro 9.7 in the household. A lot of folks tend to underrate the CPU improvement and switch to PCI Express SSD. The Air 2 is noticeably laggier compared to the Pro 9.7.

The Pro 9.7 was actually better than the 1st gen Pro 12.9 in some respects (TrueTone, better display, better front and back cameras, 256GB max storage upon release). Only bummer was the 2GB RAM.

Granted, most iPad updates tend to be incremental. The 2020 iPad Pro refresh though felt almost like a non-upgrade compared to 2018 particularly at the 1TB capacity level.

I had a cellular ipad for a while and I ended up not using cellular much also having a iphone that is easy to share network with iPad. Curious for the people that enjoy cellular models, when do you use them that it is worth paying extra for an additional device’s data? Not trying to stir the pot, legitimately curious.

I had a cellular 2018 iPP. Rarely used it. Sold it to family this year and went with a non cellular iPad Air. For $18 a month it’s too much for something I never use.

I don’t have an iPhone, I have a small data plan with Verizon, we have no electricity at our camp unless we run a generator (so no internet, no wifi). My parents have no internet service. I have two cellular iPads that I use at the camp (for one to two weeks over the Christmas holiday plus about every other weekend) and at my parents’ house. AT&T cell service on the iPads is better than Verizon cell service at either location, so even if I had an unlimited Verizon plan, using my phone as a hotspot wouldn’t be an option. It’s cheaper to have two AT&T cellular iPads and a couple of cell phones than it is to have everything on Verizon with an unlimited plan.

I use the Mini 5 to stream music on our drive to and from the camp (a little over two hours one say) and to my parents’ house (same distance, different direction) and I also use it for navigation.

No wifi at work so there pretty much. Given all-day intermittent use, having to reconnect to the iPhone every single time I need internet on the iPad is super annoying.

Something I've noticed, too, during busy times, hotspot can often be slower than native cellular. Maybe carriers assign a separate APN for hotspot and deprioritizes that when there's network congestion?

It's also good to have when the home internet goes down. Especially so when power is out as well, and I'm conserving cellphone battery for emergency communications (we have battery packs but we try to conserve those, too).

My work iPad has cellular but I try to limit its use. Personal iPad doesn’t. At home Wi-Fi covers me most of the time but power outages, occasional use away from home and traveling makes me want built in. Using the iPhone hotspot sometimes presents battery issues And is a pain.

I want to try it with 5G which I hope will be mostly available in true higher speed by the end of the year from Verizon. If we ever get the 11” with 5G I’m looking forward to trying it.

With virtual product launches having become a necessity, if not perhaps on their way to being a norm, Apple can announce a new Pro, or any product, whenever it is ready to.

The necessity to adhere to rigid schedules, as in the past (Apple would have looked foolish with nothing to show off at its huge booth at the MacWorld Expos in January, which forced its employees to work during the holidays), are long gone.

It may certainly wish to maximize the hype and wait for WWDC, but it will already have plenty to offer then, at what is a software conference anyway.

The only remaining predictable launch is the Fall iPhone event. And even that has seen shifts due to development schedules.

Otherwise, trying to predict the future based on the past, while entertaining, is increasingly becoming even more of a guessing game with poor results. Especially for a company that now has the market power and level of attention it lacked in the past.

My first iPad had Cellular ironically it is the one I just replaced with the 12.9" Pro. I got it back when T-Mobile offered free data for live at some small amount. I never used it still.

On the new iPad I skipped cellular. It makes no real sense considering I can tether from my iPhone and it is up to 40GB a month included in my T-Mobile plan.

I've noticed this as well, at least in the past, tethering seems to have a secondary priority to the towers, especially in a heavily used area. Now days, it seems like that has been fixed? I haven't really gone out and tested this but I know my Verizon plan comes with a massive amount of:

I frown on the "unlimited" 30GB .... I mean good grief. That said, 30GB is pretty nice amount.

I just upgraded my Verizon plan to unlimited recently (the next tier down with 15GB hotspot cap). My grandfathered shared data plan was getting horribly deprioritized. Haven't really tested if hotspot gets deprioritized on the new plan.

Still, the fact that tethering drops off and has to reconnect practically every single time I switch to the iPad is a no-go.

Exactly what we just did. My old grandfathered Verizon plan was getting so horribly deprioritized that we had to upgrade, that and the iPhone 12 being 5G and you can only get 5G with the new plans now.... Wasn't terribly happy about that.

Oh yeah, tethering is not optimal at all. Agreed. If one can utilize and pay for a cellular iPad - do it. What I love about cellular iPads is they themselves can tether for hours and hours and hours in no wifi scenarios (I did this for a 3 day conference once for me and 3 of my coworkers).

Yep. I remember going on a road trip with family and my cellular iPad served as wifi hotspot for the fam's wifi-only iPads. I used to have a MiFi before (like 4-hour battery life and prone to overheating) and the iPad just works much better as hotspot. Granted, kinda gigantic but that huge battery has to be stored somewhere.

I was worried when I picked up my 12" Pro on release, despite all the rumours... the Mini LED iPad Pro is like the MacBook Pro refresh. Constantly rumoured, yet never appears. Since I got it though, the device has had an Elecom paper screen protector and a decal wrap... I kept it nice, as I expected to trade in to the new model in late 2020!

Cellular or not is a hard choice. I've had two cellular models and rarely used it on each. I am in Japan, so free wifi seems pretty darn common here though. It can be nice to have a second network though, just in case your main one has issues -- or is just slow for a random reason.

I mean you're not wrong but let's be real, Apple has always been on Apple's schedule since they stopped going to MacWorld. For the last 10 years they could announce anything they wanted, whenever they wanted, however they wanted. Apple's current power and level of attention is not something they've only had the last couple years. Let's not forget iPhone 6/6 Plus are still the best selling smartphones ever, and third highest selling phone ever. They also dominate the tablet and wearable markets, as well as the wireless audio market and have for some time. Even with this extreme power though, they have always stuck to the same schedule. The only thing that has changed is Covid but even then, last year the announcements and releases - even down to the Watch band refreshes - happened exactly in line with other years other than iPhone launching late.

Could new iPads still happen in the next 3-5 weeks? Sure. I really hope they do as I already sold mine and I'm missing it dearly. But I'm fully expected to wait until WWDC if Kuo's rumors are true. If memory serves Apple typically builds a 3-6 week queue of mass-manufactured devices before announcing a product. That is, again, going off previous dates like iPhone 12 supposedly entering mass production in early September with an October 13 announcement. If the mini LED iPad isn't entering production until late April as according to Kuo, 6 weeks later.... we're in mid June.
