Is there any data showing the color contrast has changed?
I can't discern any difference between the screens (did another in person side by side yesterday for a bit)

I haven't seen any measurement that I would consider authoritative. We have a Mini 4, Mini 5 and 2018 and 2021 12.9 Pros and did a side by side. The Mini 6 is clearly better than the Mini 4 and Pro 2018, somewhat better than the Mini 5 and in static images at times I felt it was matching the M1 Pro. Although that might just be due to its pixel density.

As an example we were watching the B&W part at the beginning of Netflix's Squid Game and you can see the black levels pretty nicely.

The Jelly thing doesn't affect me as it actually means that video playback and gaming quality in landscape is prioritized. If you want to see some real Jelly take a look at the Samsung Fold etc. Things MKBHD won't tell you.

Anyways I am happy with mine. And there isn't really a comparable device available. The Mini 5 is still a great iPad, but after using the new form factor on the 6 the old design seems to be a weird size and not as capable in displaying the information I use as well.

This form factor is just too perfect and I have a 13 pro max. Each device has their purpose for my use case.

I packed mine up for trade-in because of the same observation. I like the newer form factor a lot better, makes watching landscape video content and portrait oriented forms much better even if it is only a 7.9" to 8.3" screen size increase. The brightness range comparison is the same, there is a slight uptick in contrast in my opinion.

Here is a nicely presented review for people that are curious about this product.

Just out of curiosity anyone have a 2018 12.9 that they have compared to their mini 6 (screen wise, speed wise etc)

When one of the previous generation minis shipped, it took a step backwards in terms of color accuracy. I thought all of that criticism was valid because I could take a picture of something and it would show different colors when viewing side by side (hydrangeas! ftw) with the real thing. The color accuracy was important because that's the thing one was actively using.

Scrolling, on the other hand, is never the goal on the ipad. Like a lot of animations, it's the means to get you to where you want to go next - more doom-ful tweets, more mac rumors flame spewing comments - the scroll is to get you to where you can see that new content, which when you get there, looks great. This shearing effect doesn't effect other motion - like watching video content. That would be bad.

That's why I don't think this much of an issue. It's still an issue, and Apple should address it. If I've got a budget of 15 trillion operations per second, I think I might want to use a handful of those to 'offset' the hardware effect of jelly scrolling on a per device/orientation basis.

You aren’t sensitive to the effect, so for you it’s just a scrolling issue. For people who are, it ranges from extremely distracting to eye strain, headaches, and nausea.

I posted here earlier so ill confess i actually returned mine today, last available day to do it. My thought was to eventually sell the 2018 11” and keep this but after a weekend away with it im keeping my 11”— the mini is a perfect around the house pocketknife but i just dont need it right now, it feels redundant except for a few minor things and i prefer the ‘18 11” for several other reasons.

once this 11” kicks I’ll probably get a 256 cell mini though.

I do… They are night and day different devices, iPad pro 2018 screen is way brighter and superior than the mini 6, and I notice that the mini 6 *is* slightly blurry when scrolling, but that doesn’t matter much since I have a Pro Motion iPhone 13 Pro Max…the mini 6 is zippier, cute AF… I am in love and am keeping both devices.

Some people use the Notes app, but many of us find it woefully inadequate as a digital planner/journal.

I recommend GoodNotes (this is what I use) or Notability. You can use the native capabilities of those apps or you can go snag a journal/planner .PDF file to use with it. (I have been creating and posting them for a few years here on MR for free)

Here's a link to the thread on my 2021 planner that you can try out on any iPad...
As a follow-up, I downloaded and started to use GoodNotes. I'm not using it as a planner (yet?), but for taking notes, analysis of projects etc. and really enjoying the medium. iPad Pro 12.9, paperlike screen potector, Apple Pencil 2. Thanks for opening this world :).

@sracer has done so much with that app. Good notes was one of the best apps to make use of the pencil for people wanting to take notes and organize them - it revolutionized my workflow at my job and I still find many uses for it. On both devices - my ipp 12.9" and my mini 6.

Thank you for the kind words. I'm beginning my work on the 2022 edition of my digital planner/notebook. I'm going to focus on two versions... one optimized for the Mini and the other for the largest Pro. As always, I welcome suggestions for how to make it more useful to focus... oh, and it'll still be free to use and share. :D

Wow - thank you so much - you have skills that are kind of you to share. Can't wait to see it optimized for the mini - that's a wow factor for sure. Thank you again for your work here, your even keeled opinions and all the work you do.

Returned my mini 6 yesterday. Just didn’t find myself using it. There was nothing I did that I found easier/better on the Mini when I have a 13 Pro Max and 12.9 2021 iPad Pro. 60hz, grey blacks, terrible tiny unoptimised iOS 15 UI and jelly scroll slapped me in the face every time I used it to the point where it was just a compromise in every way.

Good for you. It's not really a slap in the face, talk about exaggeration. If you can afford it, it's nice to have all form factors... I don't care about that screen issue, I just wanna use this. I'll be enjoying my mini 6 for the next year until the mini 7 comes with the upgraded screen and I'll buy that too.

Well, not really an exaggeration… the blacks are LCD black/grey compared to OLED/mini-LED black, the scrolling isn’t silky smooth like pro-motion, and any straight lines of anything bend like a diving board when you scroll. I can afford it, and the fact that this is the first Apple device in 20 years I’ve actually returned, it’s saying something. I couldn’t even justify keeping it “just because”

Another good review to take in.
You can see the jelly scroll a bit at about 08:22 with the large wide graphics on the web pages. The graphic “waves” across the screen when he scrolls up and down. That’s like my experience.

As someone who works in TV I can see the milky blacks thing and be bothered but this all still sounds like an exaggeration. It's not THAT bad. I've found myself reading more now that I have this thing. It's the perfect size and yet... it doesn't have to be perfect to enjoy.

What on earth has working in TV got to do with my opinion of a computing device? In fact it’s not really an opinion as pro-motion is better, as are the blacks on OLED and Mini-LED.

Working as an Editor and Assistant Editor, I have to deal with black and white levels every day. You said "the blacks are LCD black/grey compared to OLED/mini-LED black" and it's not that bad.

And that’s your opinion, which you are entitled to. I just prefer my blacks to be, black. Especially when they are, on my phone, iPad, and TV
