I would love to see shows like "The Boys" on AppleTV+

That's the kind of boldness I want to see from Apple - some really cool mutha-effing action shows and let's go.. I haven't watched Mythical Quest yet as I can already tell it's going to be a borefest of proportions.

Instead shows like Central Park or what ever that animated show is called is just plain sleep inducing - I could already tell from the scrubbing of the first episode.
Perhaps Apple actually wants us to do drugs?! "Have your bong ready because Apple is now showing: Schmigadoon. You'll be loving it"

Or maybe I'm just too negative of an individual. Nothing cool about being positive. HIV-Positive - Covid 19 Positive - tested positive for cancer... Great.
Agree! But it's not really Apple's MO. Hope they do something like that though.

The Boys is heading for a bad S3 though I fear. S1 was fantastic but quite different from the comics. S2 I basically didn't even recognise and S3 I'm sure will be something entirely different and less interesting.

I like both seasons equally - there's been a few stories about S3 and the new characters added. I initially went to watching The Boys without having read any of the comics. A little skeptical at first after seeing it on Amazon Prime.

Then much less skeptical.

I've often wondered if there's comic books in these superhero movies? Like does Spider-man read Batman comics and does Vought's Homelander read any Superman comics? If he did I'm sure he wouldn't be such a crazy person.

Agreed on your comment about Apple's MO - it's not their style. Apple TV+ and its content certainly matches their computer OS's. Soft, rounded corners and unicorn tears sprinkled here and there.

We dropped it for two reasons. (One of which I can't mention because it runs afoul of what I understand to be site policy.) The other reason was, of everything ATV+ offered, the only things that ever attracted our interest were The Morning Show and Greyhound. Had it not been for The Reason That Cannot Be Named, I probably would have let the free subscription become paid, just so I could catch the next season of TMS. (Well, until Apple recently gave me another reason not to, but I don't care to discuss that, here, either.)

Other than The Morning Show and Greyhound (both of which are very good, btw), the only thing for which we ever used ATV+ was rentals, and that you can do with Amazon Prime or Vudu.

I suspect the branding doesn't help, either. Try to explain to somebody not immersed in it all that "Apple TV," is a streaming device, not an actual TV, and "Apple TV+" is a streaming service, rather than either a TV or a better streaming device.

Why all the drama? Why all the mystique? Just say "didn't care for it", "didn't see the value" or something similar? Wow, mind blown.

Well, I could tell you why it matters, but I won't... (I have my reasons)
Ok, well, I accept that. (Not as if I have a choice :))

Thing is: Lack-of-content was only one reason and I'd wager readers can read between the lines and figure out, if not the exact nature of the other two reasons, their general nature.

That's a good point, Dr. Quinn! Never thought about that.

Personally I think the people in charge of Apple Arcade and Apple TV+ are really to blame. But who sets the Apple Mission statement for these two arms of the company? Is it all down to Timmy? Geez, I hope not.

Apple's PG garden? Like Ted Lasso dropping f-bombs in front of kids and centering plot points around being called a wanker? Or the gore and sex in See? Or the psychological torture of Servant?

SEE’s first episode include several blood-splattered fights and masturbation scenes. We aren’t spoiling plot details but the first episode includes a lot of mass fighting, gore, and blood.

What ****ing PG garden?

In see there was some chick doing masterbating whilst reciting the Lord’s Prayer (I think that’s the correct prayer) I wouldn’t consider that to be very PG.

Looking at Apple one it will cost me $4au extra to keep tv+ at the end of my trial and gain arcade(which I’m really not interested in).
whilst I haven’t watched heaps isn’t he past year I’ve watched and enjoyed enough to be happy to keep it for $4 a month.

You haven’t watched a single thing on it have you? There is some very adult content on Apple TV+. Some that easily forays into R rated territory.
okay, okay, I never had the urge to see SEE but I will give the Lord's Prayer thing a go, was curious about Ted Lasso and Servant. I have seen all the nature and animal shows and the WWII movie with Tom Hanks. All PG, lol. Waiting for Foundation.

When I open the TV app on my Mac or elsewhere I always think "What am I going to feel sorry about today as an extremely white caucasian male"
wow, really? this has to be a joke? Sorry but I see this a lot in reviews of movies and etc...and I'm just curious as to what causes this eh emotion/feeling/belief? I must apologize to the forum for this question but I didn't see a way to make it private unless I overlooked it. I am just soooooo curious.

Sorry, not getting the reference.

Apple should bring this to Apple TV+. Probably get about another 100 odd subscribers to fork over their hard earned. That'd be almost double who is actually paying now!

The difference is, more content lets you choose what to watch and improves the odds of finding something you like.
Actually it's the opposite because human psychology is weird. When we have too much to choose from we can't decide, and tend to say stuff like "I have nothing to watch" or "...to wear" etc. Happens to everyone when there is just too much to choose from.

There might be some validity to that concept, but I just don't buy it as an excuse for lack of content on AppleTV+. There simply isn't anything that I want to watch there and that is why I cancelled when the free trial was over. If there was more to choose from, I might have continued. And when I do have lots of choices but still think "I have nothing to watch", it's a sign that I should do something productive instead of wasting time watching TV. :)

After my free year expired last month, I opted not to continue. Yes, the programming is not extensive, and although over the year I actually watched about ¾ths of what was available, and at least one of each of the series shows, I didn’t find it enough to displace one of my other subscription services. I’ve decided I don’t want subscriptions for more than Netflix and Hulu, both of which have much more content of interest to me, and Amazon Prime. A new contender will, for me, have to be strong enough to unseat one of these three. Apple TV ain’t it, for me.

Must say that you can see the platform slowly mature. They're adding more content and must say I'm liking it.

See, The Morning Show, Truth be Told, Ted Lasso, For All Mankind, Lisey's Story, Mythic Quest, Physical, Home Before Dark, ...

And the fact they've added a button "TV+ Originals" so you can easily filter out stuff from other channels is nice.

Still hate the branding/naming. An Apple TV+ service via the Apple TV app on my Apple TV 4K is ridiculous.

I agree with this... there are a few shows on your list that I have not tried (Truth Be Told, Lisey's Story)... didn't care for See, and I watched season 1 of For All Mankind, but just can't do season 2 - I'm just not connecting with it... it does seem like Apple is stepping up the content... I still think acquiring an established catalog of older stuff would help Apple be competitive in the streaming TV marketplace.

I also like Trying, Tehran, Defending Jacob and Dickinson... and looking forward to Foundations.

Apple TV app needs to:
  1. Allow user to change the default screen from Watch Now to Apple TV+ Originals screen.
  2. Allow user to hide contents that require a purchase or new subscription on the Watch Now screen.
  3. Place Up Next on the Apple TV+ Originals screen also, which filters non-Apple TV+ contents.
  4. Better sorting/recommendation on the Apple TV+ Originals screen.

Easy to answer. Before Netflix started making their own content they had almost an exclusivity backlog of pretty much every movie or TV show to be able to watch.

Amazon Prime had a smaller but also substantial backlog of movies, mainly through their purchase of Lovefilm.

Disney+ has exclusivity of it’s shows and has pulled them from the likes of Amazon and Netflix to increase their content range.

Apple simply doesn’t have a backlog of shows or movies. They are left having to produce their own, and getting some of them wrong, or buying films that are being made, like Greyhound.
Had Apple bought the rights or even studio for a backlog of shows then they would get more subscribers easily. Imagine if they bought Warner and the DC comics.
As it happens I think ultimately they will move into Sports, which has always subsidised other TV shows.

Apple's sorta answer to lack of back catalog is Apple One. Unfortunately, the current Apple One plans are designed with Apple Music in mind. That is, if you are already a streaming music service subscriber, paying $5 more for Apple Arcade, Apple TV+, and iCloud storage can be a compelling upsell.

For now, I think Apple is just testing water. Some of the former free Apple TV+ subscribers are now paying monthly or annual. Some have migrated to Apple One. If Apple isn't happy with the uptake, it may announce additional Apple One packages to close the gap further.

I have noticed that many non-Apple users simply don’t know that ATV+ is available for them. When I mentioned to a colleague that I was watching Foundation on ATV+ he answered “oh, it’s on Apple, too bad. No way to watch.” Maybe Apple should put more effort to advertise the fact that ATV+ is available to larger audience?

I wonder if squid game for example would be popular on atv. Honestly I thought it was a pretty stupid show but Netflix has the power to create something like this that can be a global phenomenon. For apple I think a show like this could risk hurting their brand. For Netflix it’s just what people expect to see.

Sometimes I think we underestimate just how much power Netflix has. The most powerful television network created. Atv isn’t even close. Apple isn’t stupid. It’s not trying to be that. And that’s just it. We don’t know what apple is trying to do, how it measures any sort of success, or if it’s nothing more than an experiment to see where it might go.

All these comments we see, need to buy catalog, need standalone app, need this, need that. Apple knows. Apple intentionally doesn’t do it.

Apple excels at being the top revenue company in categories it’s not even known much for. By selling others’ content. Top gaming company who doesn’t make games? That’s apple. It attempts to do this with news, music, software, etc. That is why I always felt all apple was trying to do is sell streaming through its tv app. Atv is there just as a sweetener to get you to use its tv app. A model all these antitrust headlines threaten.
