Instead we just regress to something resembling this:

Sorry, but the 1980s ended decades ago! If you want modern Flat Design at least look at some Science Fiction shows for a proper idea of futuristic UI design, not regressing back to something more fitting to a 640KB RAM system with an 4.75 MHz 8088 CPU.

You're really stretching to equate the look of Big Sur to that screenshot. I would also point out that Star Trek interface designs were futuristic when the shows first aired (true for both TOS and TNG), but it's hard to say that now.

TOS We would agree. But LCARS still looks neat even today, rewatching TNG and DS9.

I wasn't equating anything Big Sur to those screenshots. I was saying if I wanted to go all-in on flat design, it'd have to be more LCARS UI, less Amiga WorkBench. Something looking futuristic, not a revisit of the 1980s era of design.

Also, I want to say... I think this whole approach is wrongheaded. Why do we want interface designs to look futuristic? “Cool” is not a good property for a real tool to have, over the long term. (Which isn’t to say it’s bad—it’s neutral.) “Cool” usually comes from novelty, and novelty wears off.

Interfaces should be visually pleasing, in a way that lasts over the long term. They should be easy to parse at a glance, while also being easy for newcomers to understand. And they should endevour to do all of this without taking up too much screen real-estate, lest they waste a user’s available pixels.

so, you're saying that big sur works? as it seems to meet your requirements...

Big Sur wastes screen real-estate, As I have said several times in this thread, I quite like Big Sur. What I hate are Yosemite–Catalina. And I do still think Big Sur is a regression from the design in Mavericks.

got it (i honestly did not go back thru this thread and check to see what you'd previously posted, or how often you posted it). i do think it's funny that people have such specific issues; most people just use their macs, they don't sweat the small stuff (menu bar spacing, icons new vs old, mavericks vs catalina). but really, i quite like big sur too.

I think it's progressing slowly back towards Mavericks, and so long as the naysayers don't go all rage about 'muh flat design!!!!' the next update might be even closer to it.

Honestly, if I could go back to Mavericks I would probably done it in a heartbeat.

I would too, if it were possible to downgrade to it on a 2019 MBP!! If my old 2012 still worked the online restore would downgrade it back to Mountain Lion (my personal favorite) but all I can go back to on this one is Mojave. Big Sur is a visual delight compared with Mojave. At least my PowerBook G4 still works and looks delightful on 10.2 Jaguar

it seems octogenarians love Big Sur, and the Apple Watch., nothing can against that....

haha, what? isn't it the opposite, that 'older people' prefer skeumorphism, and older OSes? i mean... where do you get your data, to make that claim? just saying something doesn't make it true...

Big Sur is a step back from Catalina design when is about skeuomorphism, and flat design, Catalina looks better. Now everything is rounded, wasted space for a vision 5/20, light theme everywhere with a high contrast, a dumb chime when you turn the laptop or desktop like a microwave. I mean I am not blind or deaf....

...or flexible (& btw, you can disable the startup chime in system preferences>sound. d'oh!).

meanwhile, we'll all adapt to big sur (as macusers have always done; adapt to the latest OS), and when the next version happens, ppl will be back on the forum, complaining about how big sur looks so much better. ad infinitum...

dumb chime? you mean the iconic trademark sound just about every Mac ever made has been doing since 1984? Are you serious?

Yes, it’s 2020, there’s no need for a chime to differentiate the brand, I know people like that kind of tuning, but these days it’s meh... I want a quiet quite laptop without kernel panics, not some kind of horn announcing I turned on my laptop or desktop.

Apparently, in 2020, traditions are irrelevant. Sorry, I refuse to be a part of that mindset. Want a quiet laptop? get a Windows box and be happy. Obviously, a Mac isn't for you. I bet you like flat UI design as well.

Yes, and yes. I have to say my Windows laptop not only runs better, but it offers better stability than my MacBook Pro 16 on macOS Catalina, and in some aspects Windows looks cleaner than Big Sur, and the fans doesn’t sound like an Airbus A380 when I play or do something intensive on Windows.

It’s is iconic. But I’d like to rather have the iconic glowing Apple logo than some startup sound that blasts from the speakers really loudly. Especially if I don’t lower the volume before I turn the computer off. It’s really awkward in quiet places.

then disable it. simple. system preferences>sound>sound effects; it's right there.

I downgraded from the Big Sur beta to Catalina and the sound is still there. So I can't disable it.

what ritsuka said, above. also, if you've gone back to catalina, there's a separate forum for that on macrumors. you should be there, not here...
