The icons, the menus, control centre.....
I agree. Overall, it is ugly.

- The menu bar height is to the point of distraction. It's just too tall.
- The side bar items are spaced much too far apart, which just seems to waste space.
- The rounded window corners are too great causing text to disappear into the unnecessary lost space.
- The control center has an entirely different design than the rest of the OS, which makes it looked tacked on as an afterthought.
- The icons are too iOS, although I understand Apples desire to make them consistent.

This is all my option, but I've heard some hate on Big Sur here and there as well. My question is, why does Apple want to make Mac OS into IOS like seriously; I've always liked how good and "professional" OS X looked, but now it just looks so unprofessional...

And when Apple pushes this update, do you think it is safe for me to stay on Catalina?

Like I just got my new Mac, and I see this...

Its not ugly its just different. But hey if you don't like it why don't you go to eBay and buy yourself a 2005 iBook running Tiger and be happy.

The menu bar height didn't change? Disagree with everything else as well fwiw.

There seems to be quite a variation of opinions. I wonder if it has to do with resolution people are using. For example when I‘m running 3220x 1800 I think it looks great. Doc icons could look better though.

When running 2560 x 1440 it doesn't look very good. You can say well that’s because of the difference in resolution but Catalina still looked good at 2560 x 1440.

People are going to say this is just an adjustment to new things. But this isn't new. These are the types of icons Apple used to use and then they dropped them to go to a flat design with their icons. Those took an adjustment but in time they looked so much cleaner and better, now they are going back to that look that was abandoned long ago. And these icons aren't even as good as the older icons Apple used to use. These are like very childish and amateur looking. The messages icon is one of the worst offenders.

As far as the new windows, menus, ect. I just don't understand why change it, they looked perfectly fine before. Why make the menus have rounded corners? Apple just changed them for the sake of making something that looked new, but the are way uglier than before. WTF Apple, this is just bad design!

What's wrong with the messages icon? It's literally just a speech bubble on a green squircle. It's easily recognisable in the dock, unlike say Photos which I constantly mistake for Slack.

It's how people who just were learning Photoshop in the early 2000's designed icons. It's super dated. Apple had improved their icons and UI so much over the years, this is just awful and a huge step back for MacOS. I feel like I'm playing with an early beta of an OS where they haven't finished the UI yet. It's SO ugly!!

I've warmed up to everything but the dock. The shape is odd and the app icons are still hideous. I can't think of one icon that is worse than the other. They are all equally awful with the one exception being Misson Conrol. It's the absolute worst of the lot. It looks like a sticker on Playskool's Baby's First Computer.

What even is this???

I'm really not sure what's up with Apple's design team nowadays, but a lot of their recent decisions have been largely questionable.

I get what Big Sur is trying to go for, but it's not quite there yet.

Also it's a minor thing, but it's a shame to see the Settings icon from iOS make its way to System Preferences on macOS. I really can't see anything but a torture wheel of death whenever I look at it. It's far too busy.

I installed Big Sur today, I am not a big fan of the new design, but I can live with it. In my eyes especially the new Icons are a step backwards and the „free floating“ dock wastes space.

But I really do not like the new Big Sur wallpapers, I think they look somewhat unnatural and are pretty boring. I still prefer the older ones, from 10.10 - 10.13.

I know, not the biggest problem on earth...

A more colorful version of the TouchWiz Samsung 'all apps' icon I guess...

Only Samsung did it back in 2016. Apple's slipping.

Either way, I'm still waiting for flat UI design to die...I remember this type of UI was 'new' back in the '80s. Perhaps early 90's too. It's about as 'modern' as Art Deco...At least the latter looks visually appealing!

I agree with the OP. But it's not a matter of being "ugly", but a matter of being too "fluffy".

It seems like Apple wants to be the KDE of Mac.
