They said it was a radio issue. I can believe that but if you can't and it is unacceptable to you, sell your iphone and move to another brand.

The Infineon PMB8876 modem chip which is used in the first gen Iphone is also used in the, BenQ-Siemens M81 and the BenQ-Siemens EL71. Both have MMS.

Mac Life contacted Infineon and I quote

"We decided to get to the root of the problem by calling up the makers of the chip--Infineon. We contacted an Infineon representative in Milpitas, CA to uncover the details. The gentleman that answered the phone kindly explained that there is no way the Infineon chip inside the original iPhone is incapable of receiving MMS since that function relies on software rather than hardware"

Its a software issue not hardware, its a ploy to make people upgrade.

It has nothing to do with the DMCA. It has everything to do with an accounting law (The Sarbanes Oxley Act of 2002).

The Sarbanes Oxley Act (as I understand it) would prevent Apple addind new functionality to a purchased device.

Unless that is, the device was paid for by subscription.

Both the AppleTV and the iPhone use the subscription model of accounting. Apple acts as if the cash from the iPhone was paid in 24 monthly installments.

Which means that the deadline for new features in first generation phones is the end of June 2009.
Apple *are* adding cut and paste, and they *are* adding push notification.

If the reason is not legal, or technical. We have to assume its just a commercial decision.

Wirelessly posted (iPod touch 32GB: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_0 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7A341 Safari/528.16)

I can understand people's frustration but at the end of the day they bought the phone without MMS and Apple have never promised it. Apple could very well have limited 3.0 to 3g and above so they're not all bad ;)

Can you not just be happy that you have 3.0? Seriously, you think Nokia would release an update to one of their phones from 2007 so that it gets 80% of the features of their current phone? Yes it doesn't have MMS, yes MMS probably would work, tough. You bought the phone knowing it didn't have MMS, if you want to get MMS, you upgrade.

................On this side of the fence if you're a customer holding onto a first gen iPhone you are outraged because you know this is Bull and a way for Apple to squeeze more money from you, eventually you'll see all your friends sending MMS and raving about it here and you will go out and buy a new iphone........ Apple will then know they can get away with this business practice and make money and they will continue to do it.... its a vicious cycle.

Speaking as a 2g user, I was peeved that Apple chose to greedily target us by refusing to make MMS available over EDGE, but I got over it in exactly 3 seconds. I have lived without MMS for a year, and email works quite well for my purposes.

I went out yesterday, and bought Applecare for my phone, as I shall hang onto it for at least another year. I did not wait around like a 5 year-old on Christmas Eve to find out what Apple will do with the iPhone, as I did in June 2008; fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me:D

So, Apple made exactly $69 from this 2g user, instead of the $299 that a redesigned case would have netted. The nearest Apple store is approximately 30-40 minutes away, so there is no way that I am going to purchase the crappy plastic phone and spend the next year making multiple trips to the genius bar to beg for a replacement. I have better things to do with my precious time.

I voted with my purse, and decided to forgo this "revision".

I wonder why this is a standard refrain from Apple fanboys.

Breaking news: users who disagree with an Apple policy are aware that they can sell their phones, and move to another brand. I know that I, for one, am fully aware of my options, and don't need enlightenment from you, but thanks all the same.

Seriously, you believe that? There are a number of apps on jailbroken iPhones that allow you to send/receive MMS. Are you that ****** that you believe that comment? The 3G and the original are exactly the same minus a cosmetic change and the addition of GPS and an additional radio for 3G. If the hardware could not truly support MMS on the original, then neither could the 3G.

So, Apple made exactly $69 from this 2g user, instead of the $299 that a redesigned case would have netted.

So, just because it looks the same you're not buying it? Let me guess you feel the 3GS was a "minor" upgrade. As to the issues with the backs cracking, I'm sure Apple has worked on that issue over the last 12 months.

Bs

I have been using MMS for half a year now, using SwirlyMMS on my 1st generation iPhone jailbroken and unlocked on TMobile.

There is absolutely zero reasons why Apple could not do it.

In fact, I have used MMS to post to my blog. Google has a MMS interface to blogger.com and I use it: http://incursio.blogspot.com

My most recent post was made using MMS via SwirlyMMS on my almost 2 year old 1st gen iPhone. I have never even had AT&T service activated... I have been on TMobile since day 1 (I bought my phone the instant a reliable unlock was posted).

There is no reason besides apple purposely crippling it so you have to get a upgrade. My 5 year old RAZR does MMS fine (on AT&T btw).

It's like the 3G vs 3GS, I mean the 3G can do video and voice controls it's just software and you can get to work with a hack.

MMS.. avaliable on iPhone 1st generation?

I have searched, and I am sorry if someone has already asked, but the update states that MMS will be available on iPhone 3g and 3gs.. so what does that mean for 1st generation users? Will we be able to get MMS as well or are we left out in the cold??

Once again, if some one has already posted this question, my apologies, but I DID in fact search for it. Thanks.

There won't be MMS for first generation iPhones, unless you're jailbroken with an app like SwirlyMMS or install ActivateMMS2G.

Wow that really sucks.. I mean I am an iPhone user just like everyone else.. I call segregation!! UGH!

According to Apple, there are "hardware limitations" that prevent MMS operating on the 1st Gen iPhone.

That of course is BS because they want you to upgrade your iPhone

Just Jailbreak your iPhone if you want to use the feature :)

I am dumb when it comes to jail breaking the phone.. I dont know the first thing about it.. is there a "Jailbreak for dummies" website or anything.. i am just soo confused about it, and I dont want to brick my phone either.. I dont have the cash for a new one.

Search "jailbreak tutorials" on google, there are TONS of good ones. If I may speak frankly, if you can't figure out how to jailbreak from one of the hundreds of tutorials out there then you probably shouldn't own an iPhone. :p It is seriously easy. I personally like iClarified's tutorials.

Can I jailbreak with 3.0.1? I dont know how to downgrade to a older platform, and after the jailbreak do I need anything else?? Im sorry, I have never tried to do this.. and I just need SOMEONE to explain what to do, and what to download after the jailbreak is done, what the jailbreak actually does to the phone, and what are the advantages of having a jailbroken phone.. I just want to talk to a person about it..

Look at my signature. There is a link to thread that explains anything/everything iPhone.
