I get monthly security updates (although it’s more like every other month).
Unfortunately the Note 8 quarterly security updates will probably stop before the end of this year. It has been off the monthly security update schedule for awhile now.

I truly do not understand the overtly classist and over the top comments on this site when the discussion is about the iPhone and Android phones. Some background about me so you can better understand why I have this question.

I have been using Apple products since around 1992. Up until 4 years ago, my wife and I had 2 MacPros, MacBook Pro, iPad, iPhone 5 and 6. I have owned every iPhone through 6 giving my wife my old one when I updated.

About 4 years ago I personally got fed up with the iPhone for many reasons. It is still a great phone, but I had other needs. I decided to give Android a try and purchased a used Samsung S7edge. I liked it, so, after about a year, I bought a new Note 8 which I am using to this day. My wife uses an iPhone 7 (we’ll be updating her soon).

Whenever a discussion about phones comes up, many of the responses are, stupid/cheap/poor/gullible/ any other pejorative, is used to describe anyone who uses an Android phone. I don’t get it. It’s a PHONE. Do people really get there self worth based on the phone they use. And then, to make it into a class issue, “you must be poor” thing really baffles me. I understand this is an Apple site, but the attitude is embarrassing to me as an Apple product user. I have been on this site for over 20 years and have watched the users get more and more like this. Does it really affect you what phone someone else uses?

The Note 8 I have has been fantastic. No slow down, and it works as well now as it did nearly 4 years ago when I bought it. I get monthly security updates (although it’s more like every other month).
Funny Bit you Express...... Even Poor Young Girls in Thailand and Vietnam Know Apple iPhones are Better, Where they cost as much as a Nice Honda Motor Scooter. They Say you can drop a iPhone and It will keep working and all the Android Plastic Junk Breaks. I saw so many Girls with broken screens. When I broke my screen on my 7+ I felt like a Girl until I had the Screen replaced for $45 Local People pay $30. I use a 12 Pro Max for the Camera and being to take Underwater 4k Videos. Some People only need a $25 Cheap phone because they don't do Photography and Call SE Asia and make Video Calls to their Beautiful Girl Friends. The Android OS Sucks and I'm Happy you like a OS That Sucks. I Had a 7" screen Android Asus and Gave it away to a poor Girl. Enjoy your Life! And watch me Pass you in my Tesla Long Range. Bottom Feeders Don't get it! But somebody has to buy the Poorly designed Chinese Plastic Junk that falls apart because they only Killed over 700,000 of us Americans. Yup I know my Phone was designed in California and built by Robots and slaves in China and that I am supporting the Best Computer/Phone Company in the World.

Statistics show Apple users spend way more then android users on the app store for one, and due to this, they’re thought of as higher class / better paid members of society. Rightly or wrongly.

As a tech support guy of 20+ years I find it easier dealing with apple products over Microsoft and android. No bloatware, less viruses but the downside is less choice of hardware of course. Changing the colours of your icons and other pointless aesthetics too if that’s really important to you.

Most brands have their fanboys but I do agree Apple are at the tops when it comes to it. Some people are just *******s and Apple seems to attract the cream of the crop.

So after reading just the FIRST page in this thread, I got this as the takeaway:

"Everybody is elitist and I hate that because it's beneath me!"

And that in itself sounds (to me) a bit...well, elitist? Yeah, it's kind of coming off that way.

But honestly, is that a bad thing? Probably not; I think we may have been created with a bit of elitism in our hearts.

But if we're all elitist...
...then is it possible that nobody is elitist?

Maybe that's it. We're all guilty. We're all sinners, even; with not a one of us pure. Of course that's okay, and I just said that because of my own elitism. But maybe it's just God playing an inside joke on every last one of us for a little laugh. Come on, you laughed too.

Case in point: Music and art. I have never met so many elitists as when I was friends with people in bands and the other arts. Ooohoooooo, the hubris; you could shine your car with that stuff! (I don't know what that means, it just sounded funny in my head)

But yeah, these folks, trying to make a good impression on fans and potential customers, they would be all "namaste" with anybody and everybody that they want to (need to?) impress.

But then there's the judging that always comes later. Always! About people who disagree on the environment, veganism, what not to wear when on stage, and all sorts of things. Of course it extends all the way down to the tablet or smartwatch you've chosen.

Oh and man oh man, bring one of these beauties to a pop concert, and you'll get the side-eye so bad, it'll look cross-eyed! To the judgy (which is all of us as I've established above), it matters not how good something sounds or feels to you. Oh no, your lead vocalist's Judgism (Is that a word? Yes, I just made it up, and yes it's a noun!) will come out in full force and they may even want you to play your parts from backstage, behind 2 amplifier stacks and all the equipment containers!

A lot of people come off as though they are "to each their own" and "live and let live", but once you get to know them, that's when you begin to see their own elitism start to come into the light.

But is it wrong? I say "hell no!" Well, except when it causes us to start unjustly excluding people. Yeah, I'm kind of judgy too, and I think it's part of my DNA. But for me, there are two things to remember:

  • I may be judgy/elitist in my own way, and although God may have created me that way, I should always be making an effort to see other points of view. And then to use my own good judgment to decide what to do (or what NOT to do, as the case may be).
  • I should never let my elitism prevent me from admitting I'm wrong. Okay, I can do that, but I'll never admit I'm wrong about that Gretsch. ;)
Here's my feeling: Buy what you want. Play whichever guitar you want. Wear whatever watch you want. Carry that massive smartphone on your back like I do. Vote for whomever you want. Drive a car or take public transportation...whichever you WANT. Ignore the nay-sayers. Ignore the holier-than-thous.

TLDR: We're all elitist. You are too, so deal with it. And then have fun with it, but remember what your mama taught you and don't be mean to anybody.

Note 8? Frankly I also went down the Note route after my lovely iPhone 5c broke beyond repair (the mainbiard went bust).
Don’t get me wrong, the Note 8 is a truly fantastic device, short of being a perfect device if it wasn’t for that edge screen design. I got so many false touch registers with that design that I had to resort to Samsung’s own app called Edge Touch. And albeit the display is big, the keyboard is always sent me to the edge (pun very intended) with so many typos, something I had only on occasions with my tiny iPhone 5c’s screen. And the battery is just…not good at all. A shy shorter than the battery life on my 5c.
The stylus is great, on par with current iPad mini 5. But the display tech itself has some serious bug. Use it very frequently, and it will develop a burn-in. To put the cherry on top, the touch will eventually failed to register, only accepts the stylus input. If the screen’s broken? Good luck: Samsung has already went down the Apple route by offering the complete screen replacement only at full service cost even to this very day. $200 for a 2017 device? Okay…
After all that pains, I still go with both OS, but only with devices that fulfill my needs: a cheap Android for easy data transfers to colleges and an iPhone 7 for my daily entertainment and me times.
.
Bottom line: android and iPhone are good, but their flagships are not for me.
.
PS: you should visit GSMarena sometimes. It hosts Android elitists, specifically China’s and Samsung’s elitist. Try go there and tell them you’re rocking a Sony or LG, you’ll be bashed for sure. ;)

The Sony Xperia line of phones are the only Android phones I’ve actually enjoyed using. Now I vastly prefer iOS though (it has improved A Lot), as it finally does everything I need it to do - and the user experience is far superior overall, IMO. Not to mention the hardware… Many people still prefer high-end Androids though, but that’s their choice. We all have different preferences. The whole elitism thing is just a pathetic, primitive display of insecurity.

Historically the only response has been "Get a NEW Mac!!!" There's a reason that early Intel Macs have been supported by us MR users in the PowerPC Mac section for a number of years and it's precisely because of that response. You'll get very little help in the Intel Mac section if you aren't using a Mac that's a year old or less. That doesn't mean all users in that forum are that way…but enough have been over the years.

No matter what forum there will always be the troll ranting about something who won't listen. That's a different thing…Usually they get shut down. Again, I am speaking of the genuine user seeking help that gets told Apple isn't for them.
Pardon me but I don't see that. I've seen very helpful people supporting each other in this forum, even on old PPC users. Do not discount these helpful people and forum just because you had a bad experience. Heck, I get help many times on my old 2012 mini here. Nobody ever told me to get a newer mac instead.

But, if I was being a troll and keep complaining how my 2012 mini cannot do this and that, I'm sure people will advise me to just get a new mac or a PC. And to me that's proper response because it's on me. Me ranting won't change the facts, so the advise to get something I meet my needs is not elitism, but proper answer.

When a user keeps posting in various threads about wanting sideloading on iOS, that's trolling. And any responses to that user that advise him/her to get Android is the proper answer, not some elitism. When people actually ask genuine questions, I find people here are very helpful. And it is very disheartening to make a generalization that Apple users here are elitists.

I buy Apple products because I want a working end-consumer product, I use it, and that's it.

I do not want to get engaged in useless "comparison discussions" with wannabe computer guys. If that is elitism, so be it.

Well, that is what Apple has become since they started to produce (expensive) consumer products. A status products sort of for a lot of people who have no clue.
Of course it is nonsense as other Phone's are as good and also as or even more expensive (poor parameter to judge the quality of a phone as such) than iPhone's.
The good old days where Apple mainly sold Mac's and a Mac buyer usually really knew why he was buying one. Mostly despite the price and not because of it :)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I was thinking about this thing, always inherent to the price and value over time of the product: it is true that many people do not even know what software updates are (it is not so rare to see people who buy phones in supermarkets with Jurassic versions of Android and they are happy like this, maybe they are the majority, but if we go up a little (as technical knowledge) there are people who notice it. I am one of them. Beyond the technical characteristics, I like to have a phone that is always up to date. Even if support for Android smartphones has made great strides (primarily Google and Samsung), in most cases the various manufacturers do not keep their products updated so often. but already Samsung offers updates to major releases for two years, then they are all security updates that mind you, it takes and rightly so, but Apple certainly offers a supp more lasting vegetable garden to the products.

What I mean? I pay about 400 euros for an Android smartphone, let's say mid-range, and after two years it may no longer be updated, so I'm tempted to replace it with a newer (and of course updated) model, while if I pay 800 euros for an iPhone I know that for about 5years they will update it and maybe I will be less tempted to replace it because it is still supported. In the end, the money spent is more or less the same, always if you notice the updates.

We have definitely had different experience with the Note 8. The only problem the you list that I have had is typing mistakes. But, that could be my clumsy thumbs because I had similar problems with my iPhone 6, just not as bad. My battery life is still good. I just have to be careful with battery draining apps like my golf GPS. If I leave that running in the background after a round of golf it will kill the battery.

Agree. Many people don't really know about updates. They just buy phones on whatever price they can afford, and later replace it if it slows down/breaks.

I know people that choose iPhones based on what you said, length of support for the dollar. They said they don't want to be bothered with replacing phones every year or two, so they rather spend more money on an iPhone and keep it for 4 to 5 years or longer. These people are professionals, but are not nerds like us here. To them, the idea of setting up a new phone is very troublesome, and they don't want to deal with it unless they really have to, thus iPhone offers an excellent value proposition for them compared to buying Android more often. For us who likes tinkering on gadgets, setting up a new phone might be a fun thing to do. For these people, that's a waste of time, time where they can make money doing something else.

Porsches, Ferraris, Lamborghinis…you really just need four wheels and an engine…and yet…

I do not see why people with iPhones think they are "better" than others. Seriously, EVERYONE can buy the latest iPhone through their carrier, and pay it off over 12, 24 or 36 months WITHOUT interest.

I own an iPhone SE 2020, and do not feel anyone looking down on me. We also do not have the large gap between rich and poor in Denmark. The vast majority are middle class, and even children with parents without jobs are running around with an iPhone here, so the iPhone has long since stopped being a status symbol.

Same could be said for people calling Apple users “sheep” and the popular opinion that Apple products are for people who don’t really understand technology.

In fact, go anywhere on web and you’ll see the majority of people commenting how Apple products are overly expensive toys for naive people as opposed to serious pro devices for people who know true value.

This is one of the few places where it’s the other way around, so you can understand a bit of elitism as a reaction.

Elitism is applicable to almost everything in life, from phones to cars to clothes, the list is long and distinguished. It’s human nature most times to compare one self worth to the phone they carry or the car they drive, clothes they wear. You get the picture, I don’t bag out Android or any other brand that people use, people use whatever they like and can afford, show boats don’t impress me and never will. I like Apple so I use it, I don’t look down on peoples choices or bag them out for it, people buy what they like and can afford. Who knows maybe I’ll buy and Android phone one day, never say never.

Answering your question: to much idiots have internet access those days... Sorry for being so blatant.
That’s a plain example of the insulting nature. Everyone who has internet access is a human who deserves it in their opinion (in the same way that you would suggest that you deserve it). Why is it that “idiots” exist and you don’t see yourself as one ? Can we be civil and not jump straight to insulting accusations of “others”. Why is it the default for some ? It doesn’t have to be.

Indeed there is this kind of elitism among iPhone users. Since so many people have iPhones, including teenagers and children have them, it is unreasonable to tout it or slam it as a status symbol. However, I have seen just as many Android users take an outright hostile, almost violent, stance against iPhones and iPhone users. It is important to note that strange attitudes exist among both groups.
