Well.. the excitement continues:

Will we see the old record of 577 days without iMac updates (May '11 - Nov '12) soundly broken?

So far running strong with 525 days elapsed!

I guess the only hope now is that Apple sends out invites for a small media event in the next week or so - have they not done this before where the store is updated for new products coming meaning they can just be enabled in the store following a small event to announce the? I'm sure they've done that before?

The reason i say that is this new cheaper ipad appears to be one part of the rumoured changes which were coming, but those rumours did say there would be upgrades to the models around it, so that makes me think there is more to come?

I'd bet a million dollars against that - they could've just had the media event and casually mentioned the updates we've seen today at the end of it.

Probably. I can't imagine Apple holding another keynote prior to WWDC, nor can I imagine them pushing another silent update (why not announce the new Macs at the same time as the iPad?).

On the bright side, if Apple announce new desktops at the WWDC then there's a good chance that they'll have AMD Vega GPUs. If there's still nothing by WWDC, people are going to start jumping ship....

I told you not to get your hopes up. Seriously, you better be prepared for thinking Fall or later. I feel that is the most likely, but of course I have absolutely nothing specific to back that up other than an educated guess.

As a big fan of Apple for many years I now feel that Apple has become late, lame, remarkably unexciting and overwhelmingly disappointing to anyone who like to stay on the edge of technology.

Sadly no new iMacs today.

I think the possibility of a new iMac either rests at WWDC or some October event. Hope I'm wrong.

so this day confirms the redesign new imac for April or for later on event ! so the topic must be renamed for ".... in April"

Looks like a summer release is the most likelihood waiting on AMD's Vega release in April-June.

New iMacs are definitely coming but not imminently. I'm expecting to see an incredible refresh in October/November.
They might as well wait, now, and give us COFFEE LAKE processors. Supposedly there is a 15% speed bump with them and they come out in July-onwards this year.

Otherwise we will get the Kaby Lake in May-June and never see another iMac refresh until 2019.

Honestly, while this sucks for anyone who wants/needs a new iMac, (or hell a new desktop mac) today , at this point I feel like waiting for Vega (and hopefully something other than Kaby Lake) is the right choice. A Kaby Lake/Polaris refresh would just be so underwhelming at this point. We know Pascal could be made to fit within the iMacs TDP envelope, and the same should apply to Vega 11. Along with the CPU market shakeup Ryzen should bring, I'd rather not have "early 2017" iMacs that feel outdated by fall 2017.

I can agree to that for the 27s but I was really hoping the Broadwell 21.5s would get the upgrade. The smaller iMacs currently have a distressing amount of room for improvement.

Yeah but how are they going to update the 21"? There's no "Iris Pro" for Kaby Lake, so they either update it with Skylake and Iris Pro or they update it with Kaby Lake and dGPU? I'd be interested in the latter...

I genuinely thought their move to USB-C with the new MBPs would mean a silent release for spec-bumped iMacs. As things stand, it just continues to look like a very fragmented lineup on Macs although maybe the fact their USB-C discounting promo ends at the end of March should have been a sign there was nothing else coming?

Well.... Shame Apple didn't release iMac today. At this point, I'm not gonna buy a new iMac. I might look for refurbished or used one. I'd hate to pay full price today and regret it in few months

After all the negative press regarding the Pro market and desktops you have to think Apple actually has some plans for both the iMac and Mac Pro. Maybe I'm just delusional.

At this point I think Apple will at some point release an updated iMac the same day it announces a new Mac Pro. I think they are going to do it on the same day because it will be a paradigm shift and need to wait for the Mac Pro parts.

That spells AMD chips to me the iMac with Ryzen 7, the Mac Pro with the new Naples Zen processors. They both seam like ideal fits for the iMac and Mac Pro.

Look on the bright side. If Apple is still planning a spring event in late march or April, perhaps the iMac has exciting enough changes to warrant stage time. Todays announcements could easily be getting the "boring" updates out of the way to leave time at an event for the products getting more substantial updates.

I think the chance of an April event is near zero, they just dumped this stuff online today because they didn't have enough for event right now. Next hope is WWDC in 3 months, not usually known for hardware releases, but it's possible because it's more pro focused and some of this stuff is excessively overdue.

I agree though, the longer it takes, the more probable it is they're actually doing a full redesign worth stage time. Could be a good thing or a bad thing I suppose.

Realistically I'm thinking we'll all be getting to know eachother until the fall.

This is something important that I REALLY hope Apple (re)learned after their disappointing presentations in 2016.

WWDC and Apple's "special events," should be places where Apple make meaningful and exciting product announcements.

Filler such as what was announced today, along with "industrial recycling robots," "the environmental impact..." minor spec bumps, new low end models, doubling of storage etc, can and should be relegated to press releases, store updates, or at worst (short) footnotes during presentations.

Apple desperately needs to (re)learn to stay on point and on message at these events. WWDC last year was a travesty because Apple hosted a developer event that focused way too much on things developers don't care about (emoji, stickers, etc), and not enough on things they do like AFS, Metal, new hardware, new software, etc. And no, dragging the announcements of one or two new products on and on (like the 2016 rMBPs) to fill 2 hours, is NOT focus.

It wouldn't surprise me if they have another press release in early/mid-April to announce modest revs of the iMac and MacBook. Today they are in the news with new(ish) iOS products, they'll keep that going with new(ish) Macs, leading up to WWDC six or so weeks after that with what is hopefully a bigger announcement of an (i)Mac Pro (or whatever). On the other hand, if they are waiting on new components for the iMac like Vega or something else, then who knows...

Early/mid April is only a few weeks away - Apple has a lot of history of press releasing "shipping later this month/next month/in 2-3 weeks/whatever" for Macs, I'm sure they would have done the same if they had spec-bumped Macs on the way in April.

Oh sure, but they've also had a history of staggering their announcements as a way of staying in the news, which is what I'm thinking (and hoping, as someone with a 2010 iMac that is showing its age).

Between the lackluster additions to the store (imho) & Apple adding refurb 15in TB MBP's I gave in & picked up a refurb in a 2.9/16/512/460 config. I REALLY wanted to wait because a desktop is mainly what I have been looking for, but this MBP will suffice & be a killer travel companion.

I am still very interested in what Apple has to offer for their next iMac but what is more likely next? an update with USB-C & Kabylake, or do you guys think an more significant overhaul is on the bill? chassis & all?

I really can't see the body for the iMac changing too much. The iMac is an all-in-one. Unless they go for some radically different display technology I think the the next iMac will look very similar to todays iMac.
