Guys this should tell you something.

Late 2011 model.
Late 2012 model.
Late 2013 model.
Late 2014 model.
Late 2015 model.
Late 2017 model perfectly consistent.

One suggestion czerney. Go with PCI-E Flash Storage. The 1TB in my iMac is blazingly fast.
2011 was released in may. 2010 in July. Also there are assorted mid-year spec bumps for parts of the line. Just because the trend has been late releases doesn't mean thats the rule.

They did that last November - SSD upgrade prices dropped $100-200 depending on capacity.
I know but I feel that SSD prices are still overpriced.
I need 1TB SSD and $600-700 is still too much.
should be lowered $100 or even $200 for nowadays.
I decided to wait until new imac release but I researched a little more about CPU and I don't see significantly better CPU than skylake now and I totally understand Apple's position. probably Apple should wait for better next generation CPU (it might push new imac to next year Q1-Q2). Kaby lake upgrading looks like a bad decision.
there is an option for AMD Ryzen but it does not offer significant upgrading from skylake too.
no matter what, Apple will not lower their prices so using Ryzen (saving chip cost) and adding extra free features such as much lower priced SSD, better graphic card and touch bar might be an option for updated imac but Still it's not really good upgrade from current Imac line.

I am leaning towards to get current Imac but high cost of SSD makes me to wait T_T

Fall?!? I really don't hope so, my 2012 iMac is getting very slow, I need a new computer..and I think Apple also knows that a lot of customer are waiting for a redesign...your maybe right..they usually do it in fall but for I'm really hoping not just for my sake but for apple sake...

Also I hope that if they do create a new innovative* wireless keyboard that has a touch bar that they put out a normal/less expensive model like they did with the new MacBook pros

I also have late 2012 iMac that was running slow had the HD swapped out under replacement program
Now runs perfectly fine. I'm hoping to get a few more years out of mine only upgrade I may make in the next couple of years is to get the hd replaced with an sad when prices come down a bit more. and I think this will make a huge difference and cheaper than buying a new machine.

Not quite correct Stacc.

There was a late 2011 21.5" model released, an i3 3.1GHZ model.

However late year releases have been the norm. Makes a great demand from Christmas Sales.

Its not coincidental. For at least the 2013, 2014, and 2015 models they were released a 1-3 months after an Intel CPU release. Intel didn't release any CPUs for the iMac in 2016. Kaby Lake was released this past january so if Apple follows the trend we should see an iMac soon but given how uninspiring Kaby Lake is maybe they are waiting on some other component (i.e. AMD CPU, video card, etc).

Except 2016 is missing, so that's the variable that ruins the "perfect" system.

But due to lack of new product from Intel and AMD, all Apple could have realistically done with a Late 2016 iMac 5K is swap USB-A/TB2 for USB-C/TB3. If they had done that, this forum would have rioted far harder than they have for not doing anything. :)

Yes, they could have gone Skylake-R on the iMac 4K and that would have helped GPU performance, if nothing else, but I am of the opinion Apple would prefer to upgrade both members of the family rather than just one so they had to wait until 2017 for Intel to ship desktop Kaby Lake and AMD to ship Polaris/Vega.

So looks like it will be a mid-2017 or even late-2017 iMac 4K and iMac 5K, but at least they will have new CPUs and GPUs and SSDs to go with the new ports (USB-C/TB3).

I hope you are right.

But I must say that I paid a $600 upcharge on my 2011 BTO iMac to get 256 GB SSD. And it was the best $600 computing dollars I've ever spent. So no regrets.

Looking forward to paying less $$ for more GB if and when Apple ever decides to make some new machines - whenever you're ready, Apple.

Yeah I have no regrets paying top dollar for the 512gb SSD in my 2010 MacBook Pro almost 7 years ago, but it sure seems like prices haven't come down much since then unfortunately. Hopefully that will change...

Now some people speculate that AMD Ryzen might be good for new iMac.
Since Ryzen is much cheaper than intel, Apple might extensively test the chip before they make the decision and it will take some extra times.
I think there is a good chance Apple switches both the 27" iMac and the Mac Pro to AMD chips. Which means they probably want to announce it together and are waiting for Naples for the Mac Pro.

It is important to recognize though that the Ryzen 7 1800X. Is not cheaper than the Intel i7-7700k, but it would be a good candidate because of its higher core count.

For the Mac Pro Naples would solve a lot of problems with what I think Apple would want to do with the platform due its 64 PCIe lanes.
That would allow you to have TB3, dual video cards and 4 user srevicable M.2 NVME slots.

So this morning I go to the configure iMac page as I do every day, and there is a message saying "We've got something special in store for you." The buy page is down. Can it be?

Here too, clearly something else is being announced this morning. Really weird they'd announce things so close together...

Why would Apple release any Mac with an AMD chip if they use the Thunderbolt technology exclusive to Intel chips?

This is exactly right. In the desktop space, Apple is limited by the available parts. They can't help that the i7-7700K is a minimal upgrade and they are dependent on AMD for graphics. Recent versions of FCPX are highly optimized for AMD, so they can't just quickly switch back to nVidia. Changing hardware is easy -- changing software is hard.

If they stay with Intel, an i7-7700K at least has improved Quick Sync, and Polaris/Vega would be a major improvement. USB-C/TB3 would be useful for high-bandwidth expansion.

While I don't think Apple will switch the iMac to AMD, if they get sufficiently frustrated with Intel they might. They would need some replacement for Quick Sync but AMD has GPUs that support hardware-accelerated video encoding via VCE. Apple would have to change their code for this but that's one advantage to owning the entire software stack -- they can probably do this faster than any other company. Adobe still hasn't mastered Quick Sync which was first introduced in January 2011.

I would personally like to see an updated Mac Pro repositioned higher up the workstation space, plus an "iMac Pro" in between the iMac and Mac Pro. No matter how fast FCPX is, Apple needs to produce and consistently maintain Mac hardware that runs software from other companies with competitive performance. If they don't do this people will just switch to Windows PCs and workstations.

However Apple historically has prioritized a simplified product line, even if it costs them some sales. E.g, the Apple web site and Mac product line is simple, clean and easy to purchase. By contrast Dell's web site is clunky and complex, and their PC product line splintered and confusing.

I keep seeing people say no chance for iMacs in early 2017. But (one) reason these rumors started was Bloomberg's reporting.

October 18: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/arti...as-apple-gets-ready-to-end-mac-update-drought

"...the company is expected to debut new Mac computers... including a redesigned MacBook Pro, faster iMac, and an updated MacBook Air with new ports, Bloomberg News reported in July."

December 20: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2016-12-20/how-apple-alienated-mac-loyalists

"... Instead, the company is preparing modest updates: USB-C ports and a new Advanced Micro Devices Inc. graphics processor for the iMac, and minor bumps in processing power for the 12-inch MacBook and MacBook Pro."

February 1: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/arti...ng-new-mac-chip-in-test-of-intel-independence

"...Apple is also working on a faster version of the 12-inch MacBook and a new iMac with multi-functional USB-C connectivity for this year, Bloomberg News reported in December." [no hint of AMD CPU in this report btw]

These are all Bloomberg / Mark Gurman, who if not used as an official leaker, is as well-sourced as anyone in major media on Apple. Was Apple caught off-guard by the Surface AIO?

All the reports pointed to a minor updated iMac with USB C and new GPUs. He used the word 'preparing' in December, suggesting that the update was imminent. So why isn't it out yet?

yes I am waiting for iMac to replace my mid 2010 and will buy it whenever it is updated...

These rumours have been going around for a while and I think they were backed up by the reliable Ming-Chi-Kuo I don't know why the iMac hasn't been released my guess is the rumoured timings are wrong or Apple are working on something different plans do change, Apple probably have multiple models of a product that they test. I don't think that Apple have been caught of guard by Surface or anything that Microsoft have done, Apple tend to do their own thing. I don't see the iMac being updated in April or at WWDC mainly because it's a software event, I think it will be around October for Mac's with iPhone and iPad being in September (especially with the rumoured iPhone 8).

I think it's a motherboard chip set option licensed by Intel.

I believe you need an Intel based motherboard. I can't find a single AMD motherboard with Thunderbolt or even a single Thunderbolt PCIe card that is compatible with an AMD motherboard. They are all oddly specific about being compatible with Intel motherboards (X99, Z170).

I can only find talk about XConnect which is for connecting an external GPU. Intel partnered with AMD to make this happen over Thunderbolt. However it appears they did this because you'd be connecting to an Intel system anyway and they don't have dedicated graphics. Basically they didn't have anything to lose.

I'm guessing delays in the CPUs and GPUs. Appropriate desktop Kaby Lake CPUs are just starting to ship as are the higher-end Mobile Polaris GPUs. And if Apple is planning to make an "iMac Pro", the appropriate Intel 6/8 core CPUs and Vega GPUs are still on the horizon, I believe.

As long as it is truly VR ready and able to cope with some heavy work, I will be happy.

SSDs are not going to crash in price as the demand is still huge.

It is tied to that old Latin proverb "A buck is a buck is a buck", the first law of marketing. Executives and shareholders have to make a return of their money. That is how the capitalist system works. As an Apple shareholder I have to agree with the policy!

I went ahead and bought a Late 2015 27" 5K M395 + 4.0GHZ + 1TB Flash Drive -- couldn't wait any longer and it fits in right before end of tax year here in New Zealand for some write offs.

When newer ones come out I'm just going to sell it to my partners business at the bottom end of "market resale value" so her business gets a good deal.

It's going to be interesting what they've been waiting to do and holding out for though!
