The report today of finding references to new macbook pro models, but no imacs or mac pros in the latest OSX beta, kinda indicates a longer wait for us I would think.

Perhaps because good design, is not limited to a single company,
You don't have to preach to me about design (see my PC) :D

I just expect to read about Macs on the iMac forum though.

Also, I have to agree. Rumors of Kaby Lake processors in 10.2.4 for only MBP likely indicate iMac upgrade isn't coming soon.

It isn't and I know you are referring to the Surface line. However, Apple still is top dog in the design department, with others biting at their heals.

the rumours with kaby lake cpu are for the mac mini, that uses same mobile cpu like macbook pro...apple will never update after just 4-5 months

I was not referring to any specific computer line. My point is there are some fantastic looking computers.

In 2012 they released two models four months apart (July and October) and in 2013 they released two in the same year (February and October) so there is precedent.

I fully believe the MBP with TouchBar was meant to be released at WWDC 2016 but the TB was not ready, so they had to push it back to October. I also fully believe they intended to go Kaby Lake in 2017, either in March with the iMac or at WWDC 2017. March is now too close, so I expect they'll wait until October (with WWDC being less likely).

Don't say that! Haha... I agree though, it isn't good news.

Come on Apple, at least just appease us with a stop-gap Kaby Lake, AMD 400 series, Thunderbolt 3 iMac in March. Please. Please!

I was considering an iMac 27 back in 2012, and just like last time a refresh was late so I ended up with a PC. Well, some years later I'm in the market again, and waiting again ... :-/

Anyway my understanding of the Socket 1151 chips (Skylake, Kaby Lake ...) is that they are compatible. There doesn't necessarily need to be a new motherboard to support the new Intel 1151 processors. A software/BIOS update should do the trick in theory. I am not an expert at this level of geekdom so take this with a grain of salt.

This is the whole reason for Intel's roadmap to include 3 generations of chips in the LGA 1151 format - so the manufacturers can keep using the same designs. Therefore I would not expect a major redesign of the iMac for a while, or at least until after or late 2018.

On the other hand Skylake and Kaby Lake are not that different, except for the USB-C and Thunderbolt support there's maybe no performance-related reason to do anything right now. Again, I'm just making guesses.

So, it seems an updated iMac is not imminent?

I don't know what to do now. My 2011 27" iMac died at the end of last year. I thought: let me wait for the new models. I have been surviving on my 2015 MacBook 12", but it's not fun. Should I bite the bullet and buy the current model?

It could come out tomorrow. The fact that there are driver references to in the current macOS though isn't promising.

You need to ask yourself what a new iMac could do better than the current one.

For me, I use my Mac for photos. Having the latest connection standard to connect my external storage to my computer is important. Even though my MBP broke a few weeks ago, I'm waiting for a thunderbolt 3 iMac.

First, I can use all the speed I can get (my dead iMac was the top of the line). So, just updated processors would be welcome.

Then there is the possibility that Apple will release some iMac with interesting innovations, making you regret you bought the old model

Skylake is perfectly fine. I just can't stand buying old 28nm GPUs, regardless of whichever tier, heh. 16/14nm GPUs across all segments are all in market and in volume.

Their roadmap is apparently slipping, and a forth 14nm generation for segments with higher TDPs is now on the table. IMO it is not really for the benefit of manufacturers, but refreshes to fill their roadmap gaps.

I don't think there's anything wrong with the Skylake models at all for today. I'm more concerned about longevity. So long as I'm going to use the computer for around 5 years I'd rather start with a new one than a 2-year old design out of the gate.

Some very respected Apple eBay sellers have very interesting deals on refurbished late 2015 iMac's right now. Some as low as $1300 for a 5K 27" with 1TB fusion drive. I am very tempted as I am writing this on my early 2008 24" (installed a SSD and second HD in it though, so it is not super slow).

Hm, is Apple dumping refurbs to resellers? That would be a great sign. 6th Ave is a legit retailer.

Was my thought as well about a possible update, but when? That is the big question.

I can wait, first see what they introduce and then make a choice. The refurbished maybe will even drop more in price. That is how it did it with my 2008 when they came out with the current model and didn't see too much of a difference.

As said, GPU is the problem. For the same power consumption and the price Apple charges for a GPU upgrade, there are way better options in market, especially if you consider longevity.

The world has moved on to 16/14nm with tremendous architectural and perf/watt improvements. The Skylake models are paired with 28nm GPUs that are 2-4 years old.

HDD fail?

Any rumors?

Absolutely there will be an iMac in March. It's just no one is sure which year. :(

Any rumors?
A better question would be 'does anyone really care anymore'. Apple appear to be content leaving Desktops to MS and Windows these days.

But that's always the case, the pent up demand and interest is in iPads, which makes it more newsworthy.

Pent up demand for iPads? What pent up demand? Tablets are yesterdays news, falling sales, market saturation etc.

I think the reason there has been no rumours about a new iMac is because there is no news - there is no new iMac.

the mac were big in the past, from 2010-2014, the ipad were more important, but now the mac come where there are belong, second place, next to iphone, and services on third place. I think Apple realise this and is taking action
