It isn't and I know you are referring to the Surface line. However, Apple still is top dog in the design department, with others biting at their heals.

I would disagree, I think the Surface line is encouraging people to "think differently" about design and is creating a new way for people to interact with computers.

Apple's touch bar is not functional, if anything slows lots of people down, and annoys most consumers...

No, the graphics card failed. It's a known problem with that model covered by an extended warranty, but not extended enough to cover my computer. Would cost $800 to repair. Not worth it, I think.

This exact thing happened to me too, just a couple of weeks ago...

Probably waiting on touchbar keyboard before they release the iMac update. If it remains only a laptop feature it will be supported less and less. I have 2 mac minis and 1 mac pro desktops, I don't have a need for portable power, I use my iphone and have an iPad pro if I ever travel.

Yes. I wish Apple, knowing those graphics cards had issues, had extended the warranty further. So, my iMac lasted 5 years. I would have hoped a little longer.

I hope we see a refresh. The current crop is very long in the tooth. I'm holding off on one and perhaps even two iMac purchases for the refresh. I just hate buying the old stuff. This even though 2015 stuff is plenty strong enough for all my purposes.

That sounds like the problem I am having. A local apple shop said we can get the video card fixed for $125 from a place on ebay and he can do the repair for about the same. We finally got the card back and it didn't work. We are deciding now if we will give the ebay guy another chance to fix it (he said he could try) or just get the refund and move on. Move on as in new imac...

That perhaps could be an option, I third party repair. The thing is, I had already decided to buy a new iMac (higher speed, 5K), and just wanted my current iMac to last until then. And then it breaks...

I saw my first touch bar MacBook Pro a few days ago, and I must say that it looks really ugly and dumb. I would pay extra for the regular function keys.

yep the touchbar is crap I agree.

I meant overall design and quality. I use the iPad Pro a lot and have looked at the surfaces several times. The OS does not suit touch input except by stylus which is not great, so how is this a good way to interact with a computer?
The iPad and MacBook Pro is a much better solution, as the 2 in 1 just doesn't do it as a 'great design'. I am not entirely sure that 'creating a new way for people to interact with computers' means it is the best way.

I would rather go back to paying what I did last year.
I think this is one reason why the 2015 MBP was selling so well - at least by what people posted in the MBP forums, opting for the 2015 model over the 2016

Iv'e been wondering as have a lot of us about Apple's commitment to the desktop market. I usually upgrade every two years, but have held off this time around waiting to see if anything meaningful appears. My current custom build isn't slow, and was absolute top of the imac range when I bought it..I7 quad, the best GPU and 32GB of self installed RAM ( even I'm not crazy enough to pay Apples RAM tax, so bought with 16 and took it up to 32 myself)

It isn't creaking or slowing down much, but is overdo an upgrade. If Apple don't release a decent properly updated model I might have no choice but to build a PC ( staggers in horror) Come on Apple, it's long overdue.

Time to move on.
Stop throwing good money in after the bad.

I agree. Told shop to get refund, will buy a new one when they are released (hopefully when I get my tax refund)

So now that WWDC has already been announced and it's 4 months away, what do you guys think of the likelihood of the March event?

Do they ever announce another earlier event after the latest event announcement?

They have WWDC every year. They have also had a march event for the last couple years. I don't think they have any correlation. Given that WWDC's keynote has to cover so many operating systems these days I would say its less likely they announce hardware there than say 5 years ago.

I don't know if they will have a march announcement or not, but some of the products Apple has shown dedication to like the iMac, MacBook and iPad are all due for updates. This is in addition to the hardware they don't seem to care about (i.e. mac pro and mac mini).

I think because none of their Mac product line was touched in 2016 other than the new Macbook Pro, they need to act quickly now that newer CPUs are in supply. March would be a good time to launch new iMacs and Mac Minis, but probably just another modest spec bump with Thunderbolt 3 / USB-C. WWDC will be more focused on macOS 10.13 and iOS 11 since it's been that year for several consecutive years past.

They could also announce a minor revision to the new Macbook Pro at WWDC. Even though it hasn't been on the market too long, they had to make compromises with the launch last year such as not allowing more than 16GB DRAM because of the limitations on the model Intel CPU they had to use at the time.

Very high. In recent years WWDC has more often not been a place to announce new Macs (even if I do think the MBP with TouchBar was supposed to be announced at WWDC last year).

If we do not see an iMac launch before WWDC, then that could be a sign the Mac Pro is dead and the iMac will be "up-spec'd" to replace it and announced / launched at WWDC.

It's going to be interesting to see how all this pans out.

Personally I would have liked to have seen a new Mac Pro [for rendering] as I prefer separate screens and CPU but an iMac pro would be very nice.
However, since I gave up on that a long time ago, I reckon we will either see a speed bump to the iMac, new ports and GPU or something quite new [in terms of form]. I don't hold much hope for a up specced iMac in the current format - it would need a re-design.

Actually as I have typed the above and thinking about it, there is an opportunity for Apple to redesign the iMac to allow for a standard and pro model. If the Mac Pro is cancelled this would be a sensible way to approach it as it would reduce manufacturing costs and streamline the offering whilst placating the pro users [like me].

Wait and see I guess. Who knows when and what they will launch. It has all been very quiet.

Don't say that! Haha... I agree though, it isn't good news.

Come on Apple, at least just appease us with a stop-gap Kaby Lake, AMD 400 series, Thunderbolt 3 iMac in March. Please. Please!

From my reading of industry press releases there is only a minor gain from using Kaby Lake in Desktops. In fact the advice is that if you see a good deal with a Skylake CPU then go for it. The advances of KL are for mobile in power savings etc.

Doesn't help my dreams for a triple-5K setup! ;)

its the Polaris GPU that is wanted. I don't think that many here are too bothered about kabylake.
