I have an iPhone X. Every time I use it, I cover up the top portion of the phone with my hand, so I don't have to look at that disgusting notch.😥

(of course I don't😐)

I keep hearing some people state that they will not upgrade until the notch is fully gone, the 2021 iPhones will most likely have a reduced notch and I'm fairly certain we won't be seeing a notch-free phone for another 3 years or so.

What are you guys planning to do? The only roadmap to having the lastest iOS in the near future without a notch is the iPhone SE 2020.
if i am to stay within the "proverbial Apple ecosystem" then the rumoured all screen iPhone SE plus with side touchID will probably be my next purchase....have already skipped several models including the 12

otherwise this is the first time i am seriously considering android with particular attention to the impending S21

Oh help us.

Denying yourself an iPhone solely because of Notch hatred would have to be the most ridiculous reason in the history of smartphones.

You get more screen in a smaller form factor.

Though, with the Pandemic/masks impacting Face ID, I’d understand if people went for the SE, as Passcode entry for unlocking/Apple Pay is a PITA.

Android makers never had a secure Face Unlock system, so they stuck with Touch ID & ditched the notch.
It’s still a bad design.

Frankly, I find iPhone screens (even Xs/Pro Max) still too small anyway and always have an iPad with me.

My old 7 and now the SE2 serves my needs just fine and there haven't been any must have exclusive features yet with the notched iPhones that would entice me to upgrade. If Apple hadn't released the SE2, I'd have no other choice but to upgrade to the 12 mini. Since they did, I can take my time before upgrading again.

The iPad Air 4 has a TouchID power button. I'd be perfectly happy to get that instead of FaceID on the iPhone if it means a much smaller notch. I'm more than okay sticking to LCD too, until they get rid of PWM on OLED.

I don´t hate the notch, but also don´t like it. On the Mini is pretty big of course and is al ittle too much.

I´m on the SE again and the notch free screen is nice. Also is easier on my eyes, there is something about Oled and/or Face ID that makes me hurt.

Barely, i get about 5mm more screen that isn't really usable anyhow because there's a giant camera array in the way.

Also... i give up touchID.

Nah, i'm good thanks.

Apple make mistakes; see butterfly keyboard, MobileME, the touchbar, the ipad 3, the cooling solution on most macbook pros with an intel processor combined with a discrete GPU, the Macbook 12".

The notch is a mistake in my view. So it ditching touchID (hence it's return on the iPad Air). But hey, if you dig it - go for it.

As many have said you don't even notice the notch after a short while.
I have my first notched phone (12 mini) and don't really agree with this. The fact that the notch is there means you can't see the battery %, which means I notice the notch every time I look at the screen. It's not a deal breaker, still love my mini and its screen, but of course I notice the notch.

Notch doesn't bug me. For those that can't stand it, what do you propose instead?
  • keep with the forehead and chin w/ home button (SE2)
  • thicker all around bezels with or without Face ID (newer iPad Pro + Air)
  • forehead with Face ID (similar to the system on Pixel 4)
  • other??

Hide the cameras in the bezel (example below from @BenGeskin on Twitter) or work on putting them under the display (like the ZTE Axon 20 5G).

At the very least they could shrink the notch. This is the fourth generation of phone that has it, I'm sure their options have improved at least a little since 2017.

Before the TouchID on power button, forehead with FaceID or permanent/fixed, dark status bar would've been my preference.

The area where the notch is isn't a usable part of the display anyway. It seems to me Apple didn't go the forehead route just so they can advertise bigger diagonal screen sizes.

A quick Google search didn't give me exact dimensions but I did find this:

5.4" iPhone 12 mini minus safe inset area: ~5.2" diagonal

6.1" iPhone 12 minus safe inset area: ~5.8" diagonal

With that said, now that TouchID power button, a small pinhole/teardrop notch is all we need for the selfie camera.

The larger bezels on the iPad Pro and Air 4 seem more of a design choice than a technical limitation.

🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️

People with this mindset who still don’t understand amaze me. You’ve had 3 years to work it out...

forehead with FaceID
This is just laughable.

So rather than merging the top bezel with a functional Status Bar/Camera array/Best Face ID Biometric Authentication system in the industry, you’d rather split them, & have a double-decker bezel which increases the size of the smartphone?

Unbelievable.

I guess you just chose to ignore the following part of my post (bolded for emphasis).
Before the TouchID on power button, forehead with FaceID or permanent/fixed, dark status bar would've been my preference.

It's fine when the sides are actually displaying status info. Not so much when the notch is just cutting off content and you've got useless partial data on the "ears".

"option other" may just be to look elsewhere for the time being since the general sentiment is Apple is not ready or we cannot or should not force them to listen to our dislike of the notch

for the record i/we have been Apple loyalists. we are just fatigued

I don't get people who like the notch, would you be happy if your tv had a notch?

I was a no notcher and TouchIDer but I can no longer hold out. I am forced to move with times. I feel like I will miss a lot if I choose the current SE and every one says the iphone 12 screens are superb.

Now I hear that OLED causes brain headaches/eyestrain and I am confused.

Whats wrong with having a small top bezel? better than a crunched screen.

Why do people have any concern for others who don’t buy something? I mean, I think the notch is ugly but it didn’t put me off buying the phone because I think other features come first.

So others refuse to buy an iPhone because of the notch? Well great, what can I say? Makes no difference to my life whatsoever lol . Enjoy.

As sweet as my mini looks it would look better without the notch. I’d prefer Apple removed it and made a small chin instead. Still, not a big deal as far as I’m concerned.
