I don’t mind the notch, though I don’t not notice it even after 3 years or so.

Ignoring the notch (I don’t count it as part of the bezel), I like the uniform bezel around the screen compared to other phones which have one thickness for the sides, slightly thicker on the bottom then even more so on the top.

Speaking of bezel I like their choice of not going completely or more so towards the edge and having enough of a buffer so when you grip the phone you don’t accidentally touch the screen.

But they would need to do a big redesign to relocate the earpiece and selfie camera if they skip Face ID. Will not happen, I’m afraid.

I'm more than fine with forehead and chin. I expect not needing to cut out the notched portion is also cheaper in terms of manufacturing.

So if you are more than fine with forehead and chin, why do you want a Touch ID in the power button... Simply wish to maintain in future models how it is now in your SE.
Anyway, hope your desires come true, whichever they are.

Apple will likely get rid of the current SE design. I expect that's inevitable. Probably sooner rather than later. Chances are all new iPhones will have 19.5:9 AR. I'm hoping there'll be notchless alternatives when that happens.

I almost pulled the trigger on the 12 mini but the iPad Air 4 with TouchID has given me hope again. :)

i honestly don't get the hate with the notch, it's completely unnoticable and imo gives the iPhone its unique look so people will be like hey that's an iPhone etc. i mean i get it that FaceID is less usable with masks during these times, but this isn't forever masks will eventually go away. until we get a very good way to hide the FaceID under the display like others have said the notch isn't going away anytime soon. maybe in 2023 when the next redesign happens but thats a maybe

I only notice the notch when watching videos. During normal browsing I don't since I'll be looking at the middle of the display anyway. Looks like it'll be 2021 they reduce the notch, then at least 2023 till its fully gone.

I don't really care about the notch, but I do prefer the home button and Touch ID to swiping and Face ID if given the choice. I'm also not massively fond of PenTile OLEDs, though granted the ones Apple use are better at disguising the 'grainy' look it gives. Giving the 8 plus the SE treatment would be ideal for me, though if it doesn't pan out I'm not averse to getting a 12.

Whats wrong with having a small top bezel? better than a crunched screen.
Yup pinhole camera for me isn’t a solution either. It’s just another screen defect - exactly the same as a notch just smaller.

and yes if Apple didn’t display videos in it and just blacked out the ears when running games or videos it would be fine but they even pushed developers to NOT permit that.

it’s the Touch Bar of iPhones

it could work if they blacked out the ears all the time, I don't want a bitten image or video, other than it takes some of the picture its OCD hell!

I dislike the notch and can't wait for it to go, but under normal use it isn't something that I focus on at all. Most people hating on it would probably get used to it just like any other thing. We hate change even though once adapted, it's usually not a big deal.

OK, I hate the notch. It looks stupid. It was a lazy way to address a design challenge and it is amazing that Apple has not addressed it by now. Like someone else said, would you buy a TV with a huge chunk at the top of the screen missing? Ideally I would like to see some design that allows for a straight top bezel but at the very least want it minimized so it doesn't look like the dog took a bite out of my screen. And while you are at it Apple, give me a touch sensor on the screen so I have options.

If the notch just permanently showed the status bar, I'd tolerate it better. Alas, when it cuts into content (e.g. old apps, Safari reading mode), then it bugs me a lot.

I cant believe people are still complaining about the notch 3 years later. Once you actually use a notched iPhone you dont even notice it after a while. Would a like an all screen display? Sure, but the notch doesnt bother me especially on the Max iPhones. I actually think the punchhole display that Samsung uses is more distracting than the notch.

I'm sure for a never-notcher, something sets them off that they hate it and won't consider a phone with one.
I can see them sticking to their guns.

Until Apple implemented an always on display for Apple Watch I wouldn't consider buying one.
To me a watch is as much functional (complications) as fashionable. And I wouldn't want some large blank LCD around my wrist. Now AOD makes it look like a proper watch.

People have their reasons....

I got a kick out of the "never notchers" label.

People buy and don't buy phones for the own reasons. I like my xs max. Opinions to the contrary have been voiced in this thread. Like a particular phone model buy it, don't like it? Don't buy it.

Well our prayers may soon be answered:

It needs refinement of course but, Apple and the top Android vendors will perfect it soon enough. This and Power button Touch ID, and we have a fully notchless screen. I guess the tech could be applied to the Face ID sensors later as well although it will be harder to do i reckon.

Saying it needs refinement is an understatement. And my guess is the more pixels that are on the front camera the harder it will be for computational photography to create a picture that is an equal to a lens.

If only they made the phones so you didn't have to use a case to protect the fragile egg that it is........

Mobile phones in the 90s and early 2000s were no better in my opinion.

iPhones are nice looking though which is a difference hence we want to keep them in that showroom state as long as possible.

Tell that to my Nokia 3310. I dropped that thing so many times, often on tile or concrete. Plastic's less breakable than glass.

I don't mind the notch, what I do mind is that Apple have kept it untouched and the same size for over 3 years.

This ^^ and the notch is huge on the 12 mini. Although the physical size of the phone has decreased, the notch is exactly the same size as it is in the bigger phones. Not a very good design, but I just assume that it has to be that size for now... 🤷‍♂️

Never notchers will go the same way of those of us who were never going to move on after they removed the 3.5 mm audio jack. And those who say they won't move to a portless device next year.

I fought and lost the first war. Sat out the current war and will fight/lose the next war.

Don’t fight, adapt. Humans have an amazing ability to adapt, just go with it, it makes life sooooo much easier.
