MacBook Pro 16 is sold with 16 GB as base configuration. I personally don't see any reason why the 2020 iMac 27" would be shipped with only 8 GB of RAM.
Both RAM and SSDs have come down in price so much. 16GB RAM and a 512GB SSD should be standard on the 27in (largest size model) at the very least. Oh, and the RAM should be 3200MHz or faster. I hate how Apple charges an arm and a leg, for what is the lowest, bottom of the barrel RAM.

Apple don't seem at all embarrassed to offer a base model config that is by any definition tragic.

Example:
Mac Pro @ AU$10,000 (around $6000 US)
8 Core Xeon W
Radeon 580X
32GB Ram
256GB SSD

Saying that such-and-such should be standard doesn't alter the fact that Apple require you to pump money in to a BTO to get to a reasonable spec. But that's not new and it's the price we pay for macOS.

Tier 1 PC OEM workstations aren't much better.

An HPE Z4 with the same 8-core CPU as the iMac Pro (so a step below the Mac Pro), 32GB RAM, 256GB SSD and a basic nVidia 2GB card is $5700.

A Dell 7820 is a slightly better deal at $4400 with an 8-core Xeon Silver, 48GB of RAM, a 256GB SATA SSD (not M.2) and an nVidia Quadra RTX4200.

“Hello” was the big hint of 2016. I remember the hype for MacBooks and iMacs. But there was no Mac hardware announcements at all.

Here's a review of the HP AiO.

Guys never want a smaller one... :p (So, obviously the 32 incher is preferable. Other than the 5k resolution which is better in resolution and if it wins in anything, it's that. But some prefer eg. 4k at 32 inches. I'd call that a tie.)

I wouldn't say 32 inches is a large tv. I would say 50 inches is a large tv. 32 inches is quite modest for a TV these days. Though there's nothing wrong with average size, folks, right? ;)

The Surface Studio has aesthetics that make the iMac look like where it is. Ten years ago. Form and function? It will hopefully embarass Apple to do better.

Take away the iMac's redeeming feature, the 5k display. And the HP's 4k 32 inch displays.

The HP has more cores, more ram more gpu. More value. More spec. And word from the above review? New ten core options...(though I couldn't find it on the UK HP store...)

The HP has the 2080 Nvidia as standard with it's price. The comparative iMac. You're making choices vs ...do I go for the 8 core cpu for the Vega 48... Nvidia 2080 vs the Vega 48? Shame Apple can't give us the choice and allow us to decide. The 2080 is an impressive performer.

Unless you pay the £600 extra to make them 'equal.'

With iPad side car...that day is coming closer.

Azrael.

Lots of strengths in this machine but its weaknesses illustrates quite well what should be happening with the iMac.

-The design will be obsolete in three years. It is not attractive in the first place and lacks elegance and will not hold well. The current iMac case is soon a decade old and looks more fresh. A simple bezel shrink and the iMac will outperforms the HP machine in terms of look.
-Is the case make of plastic? Horrible look compared to the "silver" and "grey" aluminium iMac. Does it also have that typical nasty cracking sound when adjusted? Will the plastic also fade over time if placed in a sunny window?
-CPU seem to be worse that what you can get on the iMac
-That power brick...what a failure. 330W, a bit weak to drive a 10900k and desktop 5700XT. Illustrates how well designed the iMac Pro is having a 500W internal PSU. Give the iMac an iMac Pro cooling and this HP is dated.
-4K on 31.5 inch will not be as nice smooth display as 5k, 27 inch. This is a personal preference and I would take the 27 inch 5K anytime (or a 31.5 inch 6k/8k).
-The screen is very high up for such a large screen. How about the ergonomics? Even the 27 iMac is problematic for short persons. Give the iMac a adjustment mechanism of the XDR screen which will not cost $1000 to implement when production is scaled
- I live in a family so having really good speakers is not really an advantage. Looking forward to the AirPods Studio.
-No MacOS obviously but widows is better for gaming anyway.

There are absolutely NO objective comparisons to the iMac. It is more iMac bashing which makes the review questionable as a whole. Give me an anandtech review anytime.

Pretty much. Same reason they ship with Fusion Drives.
Probably, the screen is probably still one of the more costly components and there must to be some compensations on the other components.

Two weeks to WWDC and iMac 27 inch delivery is essentially stalled for BTO second week on the row. Must be bad for business. Release the new iMac next week as Apple has plenty of operating systems to discuss at WWDC. There will be no crowd that vents their excitement (chearing) and disapproval (complete silence :) ) or murmuring on an online event.

Well, if it was supposed to drop this week Monday could still a valid option to get it out the door in time before WWDC. It seems odd to not sell anything/much for another two weeks and the alleged launch in July. On a german board i read by someone who had recently ordered that there is absolutely no movement in his order, Apple may very well just be holding on for the release and than send out a machine with the new specs instead of having to deal with the refund request.

I actually don´t think there will be no cheers at the WWDC keynote. I had been thinking about this the past days already, and now that they announced to start have people work in office again they pretty much can do what they always did but without press in the building. You spread your employees out in the presentation room (for social distancing, usually they just occupy the first three rows) and have them give cheers like they do during all of Apples closed events. (It's not that the press is sitting there cheering, all the cheers you hear are always apple employs)
At least i expect a fairly normal on stage event.

So you guys still think we'll see something iMac'y before/during WWDC2020?

I think the whole black lives matter and protests and riots pretty much made guesses impossible. This week would have been the week that made most sense, but thats out of the window. If it's only a specs bump it might as well have been pushed to WWDC by this... or happen next monday (=two weeks ahead of WWDC). After next Wednesday i would be 99% certain that WWDC is the Date.

8 gigs of ram and a Fusion drive on a £1700+ machine is a disgrace.

You seem to be conveniently ignoring that it also comes with a 500 nit 5K P3 display, wrapped up in an all metal and glass chassis. The competitors all use plastic chassis and HD (maybe 4k) displays way below apple standards.

It is very frustrating that SSD is only offered via BTO, but it's far from a disgrace. And with the 27" iMac just buy more ram and stick it in the back port like everyone else?

Price drops on iMac Pro on apple store is now at $4599 . They are now even less than B&H has them for . Also even the BTO I see drops on all the configuration options .

The price is (in)convenient.

Take away the best thing about iMac (the display, how can anyone 'conveniently' ignore that?) and what have you got for your money?

A very mediocre computer. That's showing its age.

The display in the iMac was introduced a while ago. 'Wow' at the time. And it's still decent. But it was introduced years ago. Perhaps time to update the screen size to 32 inches with 6k res'.

Take away the monitor? How does the rest of the computer add up?

8 gigs of ram (the Macbook Pro 16 incher has 16 gigs of ram?) and a fusion drive (with the best will in the world, it's 8 years old...even the Mac Mini, ever OTHER Mac ships with SSD drives :p ) and that low end, 3 year old Polaris gpu. A disgrace on a computer for that price. £1749 - £2249.

£4600.

That will come down alot than that when the new iMac ships.

I'd expect the dealers to be open to negotiation.

Another thing, Mike The Soundguy.

The iMac Pro does have a decent sound system.

I wonder if (the new iMac) will ship with better speakers/sound system.

That maybe something you may still want to weight up between the 'new' iMac and the 'iMac Pro'. Hard to know until it's revealed and the impact it has on prices relative to the new model.

iMac Pro still 6299 $ in Canada :/

:O

That's going to hurt in the morning.

$6299... (That's going to drop like a stone when the new iMac model is released...)

In the UK, there is 0% over two years. That would make the entry iMac Pro £200-ish a month over two years.

I wonder what used prices of iMac Pro's look like? (As long as they are still under Appe care...)

That's another area of exploration for cost sensitive budgets.

But I think the new iMac should be better value and performing than the entry iMac Pro. It would be like a half price price cut.

I'm expecting the £1745-2245-ish models to be far more compelling in performance and value. If the design is sexy? That will be a bonus. Rarely do Apple underwhelm with 'new' designs even if the design is occasionally flawed.

No price cut where I live. We can hope it is global price cut for iMac Pro. If the BTO also drops some, it is an attractive machine. They are perhaps guiding 27 inch buyer to iMac Pro until the new iMac is released or making it competitive compared to the new iMac.

remember that's CAD so in USD it's closer to $4660 based on current XR

still a hard pill to swallow tbh.

It's a bigger pill to swallow when they do XR from USD in GBP nearly 1:1 -_-

Yeah. We're (UK) paying more for the iPhone 'cheapo' than the US now.

The iMac Pro is 3 years old. Very nice when released. But I still thought it was 'over' price wise when released. So 3 years later...no price cut from Apple themselves? Hopefully, like the iPhone 'cheapo' Apple try to make some of the Mac pricing rational. Maybe that's what the new 23 incher is about ie getting iMacs back under £1k again.

All the stuff in it is old. Didn't the BTO 18 core cpu in it get a £1000 price from Intel themselves? (Wasn't that to compete with the 16 core AMD?) Did Apple pass that on to Apple iMac Pro BTO customers?
