Price drops on iMac Pro on apple store is now at $4599 . They are now even less than B&H has them for . Also even the BTO I see drops on all the configuration options .
Strange, I checked the US store and it is still 4,999. Are you sure you are not visiting the EDU store?

It should. And no refurbs currently on sale. Least expansive Mac Pro refurb is 15 000 CAD.

Lol...

At least my battery isn't totally swollen ..... yet .....

$15 grand?!!! :OOOOO *pulls agonised face distorted by Apple pricing 'reality.'

All the stuff in it is old. Didn't the BTO 18 core cpu in it get a £1000 price from Intel themselves? (Wasn't that to compete with the 16 core AMD?) Did Apple pass that on to Apple iMac Pro BTO customers?
Cascade Lake W got this price cut. Not the previous generation which is in the iMac Pro.

Cascade Lake W got this price cut. Not the actual previous generation which is in the iMac Pro.

I see. Thanks for that.

Shame we're not on the AMD cpus. They seem to really punch hard for the thermal efficiency.

What is really hard to accept is that AMD has 6 cores/12 threads more to offer than Intel. * This * is a shame to any mainstream power user like me. I still need to go to Cascade Lake W platform, like a new iMac Pro 2020, if I really want something that suits my usage... and has AVX-512 :p

The iMac Pro is 3 years old. Very nice when released. But I still thought it was 'over' price wise when released. So 3 years later...no price cut from Apple themselves? Hopefully, like the iPhone 'cheapo' Apple try to make some of the Mac pricing rational. Maybe that's what the new 23 incher is about ie getting iMacs back under £1k again.

Let's face it Azrael, you think everything is over priced on Apple store. Getting the GBP on track again might help a lot ;).

Sometime when I have looked into the Edu store it sort of remembers that I have visited and uses Edu prices when I enter the normal store again. My iPad shows cheaper iMacs than my MBP. I think you need to actively leave EDU store.

Well the wish list is more thunderbolt ports like it has , better fans , ram and the SSD is faster if I'm not mistaken . I love my 2013 iMac and it has served me well . Its time to upgrade and also a change so yeah the space gray is nice too . What I got frustrated with was this whole thunderbolt port thing . Not being like USB just throw a hub on as we know to add more ports . When I first got my 2013 I saw how you couldn't really add more thunderbolt unless it was some drive with a passthrough port etc . I rather have those onboard port options and not have to fumble with a dock add-on or a drive that has or doesn't have a passthrough etc . The sound doesn't matter as I use my studio equipment with different speaker system etc . Believe it or not I even still use the headphone output for another audio reference output on the mixer. My iMac had been doing these random power downs also so I'm bit worried if its a supply thing etc . Thats a different conversation . So yeah I kinda like it LOL All good let's see if I can hold out . PLUS .... Believe it or not I may not want to deal with Catalina yet and yes I know I cant hold on that idea for to long either lol . My tech industry is nuts when dealing with updates etc . Mojave has been great to me so far so with that thought I could was into the next OS was my thinking . :)

The display in the iMac was introduced a while ago. 'Wow' at the time. And it's still decent. But it was introduced years ago.

It's still one of the best consumer PC displays on the market five years on. The only higher-resolution displays are the XDR at 6K and the UltraSharp 32 8K and both of them cost more than a maxed-out iMac 5K.

Apple never cuts the price on a currently shipping model no matter how old it is, but they may offer better pricing to third-party providers to allow them to offer the sometimes significant discounts they do.

Not true, they discounted the 2013 Mac Pro. iPhone 1st gen got discounted also few months after introduction :)
I think there were more examples but yeah, in general Apple doesn't but there are always exceptions or one off situations. ;-)

I think a majority of Apples price changes in a product cycle are based only currency values.

Got to give some 'fair play' to AMD. Their 6 core 12 threader is widely lauded in value and performance.

True. And True. And...(!) (*using his Steve Jobs voice...*) Steve recognised how important a product the iPhone was and cut the price from it's initial market introduced price. He even said so. Publically.

And for Tower fans. Apple even offered a G5 1.6 gig Tower for £999 inc VAT here in the UK.

And, for iMac historians...they offered the original iMac at £595 inc VAT. Yes. A desktop Mac. Here. In the UK. For under £1k. *WITH* keyboard. Mouse. And a G3 processor!

For the iMac I price out with 1TB, Vega 48, 32 gigs of ram, 8 core (the one that I was going to buy before I balked at the upsell rodeo...) was around £3560.

So the Dell is a bit cheaper. I've seen it as low as £3100.

At what point does Apple offer an iMac on the back of such a monitor where they can say, 'Our iMac is cheaper than the Dell display and you get a computer...'

I wonder if Big Navi can run that 8k Dell monitor? It also has that (for me) essential rotate to portrait.

It's not a good moment to travel these days :( And Adele is still in her hiatus :(

Travel will be back. ;)

I hear Canada has a beautiful coast to coast railway journey. That must be a wonder to behold for train and scenery fans.

Fair play to Adele. She's got herself into good shape. And she's sold alot of records. Managed to get 'her story' out there.

That's all creative types can try to do. Share our story. It's great if it happens at a satisfactory scale to make a living.

For me, personally. That involves a Mac. I remain hopeful of the 'new' iMac.

I kinda thought you'd be on headphones and have your own augmented sound system/speakers/mixer etc.

And that's the thing with a stable OS. ie. If all your music plug ins work and are 'stable' on a given OS and music software version, being pushed onto eg. Catalina...have to be real careful that stability isn't thrown to the wolves and the upgrade cycle begins. Again.

Hopefully the new iMac has improved speakers and more TB ports.

There are *some* ;) bargains to be had on the Apple store.

iPhone £419. inc VAT.

iPad £349. inc VAT.

Apple Watch. £199.

Logic. £199. (Incredible value.)

Final Cut Pro. £299. (Bargain.)

Mac OS. £0. (Free. I remember when you had to pay for Mac OS upgrades.)

And on the iPhone and iPad. Software pricing has been a revolution of democratisation.

Hopefully the new 23 inch iMac gets the iMac back to its grass roots as the value and performance leader for 'the rest' of us. (£999-£1450 should be doable.)

Yes. I know. I've provided several examples of Apple not being overpriced. I ought to hang my head in shame. :p

I think it lacks PCI-E lanes to have a higher number of TB3 ports.

Ahah yeah I never did it. Another "dream", but would do it in car since I love to drive and stop everywhere. The Rockies are the Canada's paradise.

If Adele would be playing at the same time of Wimbledon, that would be seriously incredible. Ahahah !

The more time passes the more I'm getting pissed off with Apple for their lack of innovation. The specs on the iMac are truly awful and insulting to the customers. No SSD and only 8GB default is just shocking. It would be ok if the product was half price but for the price tag they are out of their minds.
Is Apple getting out of touch with reality? Or they just don't care and simply charge massive premium as they feel they can get away with it?

I am guessing the latter since Mac shipments and Mac revenue continue to grow year on year in general - especially compared to "the good old days" some folks pine for to return. So while many on this forum "just say no", far more people outside "just say yes".

Yeah, sad sad reality. Lets hope that COVID will help with that and people will be more cost conscious. That itself could be a good shift.
Although there will always be some jerk that will get fully loaded Mac Pro just for facebook. (trust me, I've had those when I worked for Apple years and years ago)

Luke Miani made a interesting point in his new video about more real estate on the inside of both iMac sizes if fusion drive/HDD is not part of the design anymore. Had not really thought about that even knowing that the SSD is put in at a complete different area and is not SATA based.
In the video he also makes a comparison to the iPadPro and how the smaller version got a bigger screen and the bigger version got a reduced footprint by reducing bezels. He guesses that thats why we hear about a bigger small iMac screensize and suspects that the largest model will also only get a smaller footprint but keep the 27 inch screen size.

I just wonder if the space that is won by removing the HDD space would make up for the real estate lost due to the smaller overall size. The tighter the interior design gets the more i am afraid of soldered on SDD/RAM or no RAM door.
