Here is my prediction. I think Apple will keep the 21.5” as the budget model (look at the iPad, iPhone SE and MacBook Air). There will be a new 23.7” model and a redesigned 27” or larger (wishful thinking) :)

I think it makes perfect sense for Apple to keep the 21.5” at a lower price point ($999?). Or keep it at $1099 and change the standard configure to SSD or FD AT LEAST (please it is 2020 Apple) and maybe 4K if they really care about the user experience. Good user experience should not be exclusive to pro users.

It is also interesting that the 21.5” is still showing in stock.

Having a budget model makes sense when they are trying to increase their services revenue. This is why you can buy a sub $1K Apple laptop again.

It would be nice if they can squeeze an SSD and retina display into a budget desktop.

What you say makes sense because there are currently two different 21-inch models, one cheaper without 4K. But I think Apple is interested in simplifying the iMac line, as the catalog that is available now can be a bit confusing for a lot of users. I don’t think they want to do some kind of “iMac Air”.

And finally, as the incoming 27-inch iMac looks very good, they will have to make a lot of efforts to justify the price of the iMac Pro, at least with new processors, Big Navi, Mini-LED and other major improvements.

Doesn't it concern you that it'll probably be the last model with an Intel processor?
It’ll be years before an ARM chip can fully compete with an 8-core Intel CPU. Not to mention the software compatibility issues to begin with. it’s a good model to get imo.

Agreed. Unless you absolutely must have a new machine right now, I'd be sitting on the sidelines for another 12 months watching this whole thing unfold. See where Apple goes with it and more importantly, see where the software you use goes.

It is a concern. I agree that it will take 2-3 years before Apple have a competing product and after that additionally 3 years.

ARM based Macs will on the other hand have softwares waiting for a recompile so these machines are not without issues. In my view they should keep the Intels iMac and quitely replace them one after the other when the power of the ARM chips are there. Furthermore, we have heard nothing about the GPU of ARM chips. Replacing a 5700 with Apple graphics probably requires a dedicated Apple GPU. That needs to be in place as well unless they connect a ARM with a AMD GPU.

WWDC will perhaps show us how far they have come with desktop ARM etc and hopefully a roadmap. Apple would not invest a cent in the Intel iMacs if it where to be replaced next year.

I don´t care. The only thing that concerns me is that i need a new computer to do my work and don't want to spend 4000+€ on a model from over a year ago.

Do you guys know if the new iMac will be immediately available to be ordered (or preordered) also in Europe (Italy)? I am gonna save money

I would say yes, Jon Prosser has said that have iMac's ready to ship, literally sitting in warehouses as we speak. If that's the case I'm guessing they will take orders the same day with shipping maybe on the Friday or even earlier.

We are also expected to see the over ear AirPods Studio as well (again according to Jon Prosser). The iMac will not be the only product announced at WWDC, if these leaks are true.

iMac redesin
Airtags
AirPods Studio over the ear headphones
MacBook Pro as well according to Jon Prosser.

Just saw this : https://venturebeat.com/2020/06/10/...d-mobile-arm-chip-roadmap-looks-through-2025/
Just speculation, but since this thread is all about speculation... 😂
There is a lot of good information in there. The stuff about AR glasses is very interesting, but not quite so relevant to this thread. Getting closer is the talk about integrating their own 5G modems into the mobile chips. Maybe we will see the same for Macs. It would be especially useful for the laptops, but I could also see benefits for the iMac. As an example, I have moved around a lot for jobs, and often rented somewhere to live with a 6 month contract, but broadband contracts were 1-2 years. It would be great in those circumstances if my iMac could have it's own internet connect, and create wifi for the house via a personal hotspot.

The MacBook Air, for all intents and purposes, has only seen mild changes since its inception in 2008.

I wonder if all those clamoring for a 30-32" model will be as happy when the line starts at $2000? Or more?

There haven't been many users of the 27" 5K panel, with Apple helping to keep that production line alive for all these years.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm not aware of any Retina-class monitors in that size range, aside from the XDR, which is of course $5k.

If Apple is again the primary customer for what is practically a bespoke panel, how will its costs be amortized? Especially for a desktop model that sells in lower volumes than laptops?

Maybe in 2028, folks will again be wondering why the iMac hasn't changed in eight years.

The 27" 5K panel was very expensive when introduced to the iMac. Monitors with the same panel cost more. Also, do not think about the XDR price. Much of the cost comes from the miniLED backlighting and the cooling to support the top spec brightness capabilities. Using the panel with similar LED backlighting to the current iMac would be a very different proposition.

I wonder how thick the new iMac will be and how it's cooling is. Maybe the ARM move will already bring a slimmer model if it happens three years from now, or maybe this one will already be super slim and overheat. ;)

Yes. It will be. We don't know that. But it´s very very very likely.

I'm from Italy too and i'm waiting too. Usually when Apple introduce new device thay are immediatly ready for order in Italy.

the main question is: Apple registered only one iMac... 27" is long delivery date. i suppose

- "old" 21 inch sell as low budget iMac
- new 23inch as NEW iMac
- 27" NOT INTRODUCED NOW but in the next months and sell only as iMac PRO!!

This thread summarizes all my hopes and fears every year we come up to when the iMac is being refreshed. I just hope I’m not let down AGAIN. Since 2015 Ives asked myself:
  • Will this be the year we get a redesign?
  • Will we finally get higher end video cards so I can game on it?
  • Will it finally get real cooling so it doesn’t sound like a jet taking off?
  • Maybe just maybe we’ll get that headless Mac we’ve been waiting for

I hope it is very THICC. Cant risk **** cooling again. I am sure Apple will find a way to mess up the cooling though....

Good questions. The last one won’t happen, we’re stuck with an iGPU Mac mini for a while longer. The first three may happen, I hope....

Yes. It would go 'some' way to justifying it's £5k price.

Azrael.

I'd rather have two 32 inches. :)

Azrael.
Woah woah woah. We aren’t all endowed in that way, unfortunately... ;(

Are you set on at least one additional monitor to go alongside the updated iMac you’re purchasing?
