Damn. We don't have the same definition of North. For me, Northern England is like ... maybe Bradford ? Doesn't know that city. Or Middlesbrough ? lol :p Just saw you have a city called Halifax and Washington lol !

Here in Quebec, "north" is like real far north. Not a 45 min drive northern Montreal. ahaha

Wales seems like a quiet place. Never heard of anything happening there until I watched The Crown.
Ignore everything I say. I'm absolute nonsense. Yes, Bradford is definitely north. There are lots of names in the US (and elsewhere) that are also city/town names here. I suspect they were named that in the UK, first :p

I've only been to Wales a few times, but the scenery is amazing! Very beautiful place (well, parts are). haha

I think I must plan a full month of vacations when going to England. I wanna go to Wimbledon, make an Adele pilgrimage (Tottenham, River Lea), discover London and its history, Oxford University and Cambridge (I'm academic after all), University College London and Imperial College London (read a ton of papers from there, wanna see it for real), and then go in the countryside. Visiting cities after cities, castles... Manchester, Liverpool, and even go to Scotland where landscapes seems really beautiful.

To a southerner, anything north of Watford is The North. To a northerner, anything a few miles south of where they are from is The South. More realistically, anything south of Cheshire/Yorkshire, but north of the string of counties including Oxfordshire/Bucks/Herts/Essex is the Midlands. I'm from Lincolnshire, so Midlands, but feels much more like the north than south (I have lived as far north as Newcastle, and as far south as the Isle of Wight, but best of all: Liverpool).

But people will disagree on the definition even more than they would about the iMac chin and bezels combined.

That's a long wish list you have. Sounds like all that would make a fantastic holiday (vacation to you).

This is the real answer.

I am very much in the annoying southerner category, aka north of the M25 motorway (large road around Greater London) is The North, and the Midlands doesn't exist. Teehee!

How long is this thread!!! Can it keep going till August or September or whenever the iMac finally gets updated?

A couple of us invented a new drinking game where whenever we see "Azrael." on a reply we do a shot, good times! 🤣🍻
We might all have to collude stop posting as much. There is only so much I want to drink on week days!

Heh. This thread only has 278 pages. You should've seen "Waiting for the 2016 MBP". Got up to 1400 pages. Those were epic days.

Only half a dozen pages are actually on point.

Could this maybe signal XDR mini? Omg, I would be so happy :)

Lol. It’s like Apple is trolling me. I gave up on an iMac update happening soon, but was thinking of buying an external today. I settled on the LG wide screen option and then I see this, it’s like they’re purposefully making people wait to do something.....

Check out Dell Ultrasharp U2720Q. Way less expansive for essentially the same performance.

Wouldn't read too much into this... they have been out of stock in Australia for weeks then came back into stock yesterday. There were reports of LG panels being impacted by COVID shutdowns a while back. Could have had some impact on iMacs as well. Has been one of my personal theories why the ship dates are pushed out... to keep demand under control while there were limited parts.

dropping on a carpet....people these days drop those gadget on solid surfaces
so kind of irrelevant...whats next dropping on a bed ? :))
[automerge]1596015734[/automerge]
i want to see the next imac get intro bend and drop tests..because why not ?!
just in case you travel with your imac to know that you can drop it once and be good :))))Screen Shot 2020-07-29 at 12.41.56.png

dropping on a carpet....*Snip.*

It wasn't referenced for the 'drop test' specficially. (Though knowing that the glass can withstand a drop impact is kind of useful. That's something that eg. Gorilla Glass can constantly improve against...)

The main thing was the 'rigity' of M$'s Surface to be used as a skateboard.

I admired their level of conviction in the sturdiness of their product.

Not sure what it's made of. But perhaps Apple can learn something. And use something similar.

As for the iMac. I don't trust the 'glass' durability in it too much. Part of the reason I'd wouldn't try and guitar plectrum the glass of the gaffer tape apple uses to upgrade the SSD in it (not that we're really meant to get inside iMacs...)

Design is really important. It's obviously not just an aesthetic thing. It's how robust something is too. They are one and the same.

Strength of materials.
Bezels eg. Form and Function.
Ergonomics.
Temperature.

These are all important. And in three of these areas, I'd score iMac poorly.

As for travelling with 'her' iMac. Good luck to her. I guess it's either a very large handbag or a special travel case for the iMac. Even something like the iMac. Having it being able to withstand a drop or two from a desk would be 'nice' to know.

It doesn't have to be test to destruction. But striving for durability with each iteration wouldn't go amiss.

5K display is not the same as 4K. Nah, I'll wait for iMac or Mini + mini XDR or I have no idea ;)

[automerge]1595994240[/automerge]
Talking about XDR panel with less features for around $2000 :)

I'd go for an XDR at £2k. That's in line with cutting edge monitors from Apple's past.

That iMac release is imminent.

It's probably another 3 weeks.

21 days.

This one? £600.

Could go for that.

or the BenQ 32 inch 4k.

5k. Twice the price from LG. £1300? Like to see the 5k get driven down to £999. With an Apple badge on it.

Azrael.
[automerge]1596016956[/automerge]
How mini we talking

Just a rational line of displays from Apple.

6k. DR (with no special 'x' stuff...) £2k.
5k. £999.
4k. £499.

Give me hope and liberty, Apple.

Azrael.
[automerge]1596017094[/automerge]
And yet this wait has been worse for me. Pandemic time passes differently I guess.

Time is relative.

If we are happy and enjoy something...time slingshots past us.

If we are focused on what we don't have or don't enjoy the wait? Time drags.

That's the relativity of time and how we perceive things.

If I'm drawing...and I switch that right hemisphere on? And attain that high level attunement?

Hours can pass. Without me knowing or caring.

Where are the midlands ? I'm trying to see on a map. Is Manchester in the midlands ? Or Birmingham ?

Nottingham. Robin Hood.

Don't ask anyone from London that question.

Don't worry. Azrael and I will give you a nice tour of the UK when you come. Well... we will miss out Wales, and a few other bits...

I got my degree in Wales. ;)

Sooner or later products with Mac touch are going down.

When they perfect the interface for that in their labs.

Full Fat Mac. For iPad. For iPhone.

And yes. Macs that can be touched (you know what I mean...)

Ignore the term, 'midlands'. If it is north of Watford, it is 'The North'. You want to be below Watford, if possible.

*Azrael mumbling* "Classic southern pleb"

Classic? 'The Sweeny.'

They can keep the M25.

Bradford...you're getting there.

Halifax and Middlesborough, Manchester, Newcastle...

Carlisle.

That sort of thing.

Wales was a decent place to get a degree. Rather that than Leeds for me. Far more scenic and relaxing.

If you want 'really' North? It's Scotland or the Outer Hebrides.

Azrael.

'Great' Britain is very small relative to somewhere like Canada or Quebec.

Must be alot of unexplored frontier in Canada/Quebec. Nova Scotia. I wonder what that's like. Cool name though.

Travel time in that regard is an order of magnitude of difference.

That said, a 6 hour journey to Scotland from the Midlands is enough for me.

Plenty to see in the UK.

All the places you mention.

In Wales, there is Snowdonia.

In Scotland...I'd recommend Edinburgh. The Whiskey Tour is excellent. And all the rugged scenery, historic sites...Islands to visit...

The Distillery on the Isle of Mull. Recommended.

Scotland? Keep you going for a life time.

I’m from Manchester in England. We’re definitely “northern” (and proud to be!).

There’s loads of lovely places in the UK: The Lake District and the south coast areas in Dorset are my favourites.
Cornwall is nice, too. Well... only if the weather is on your side.

There is something about walking in the rain in the Lake Distric. Rather therapeutic.

£534. That's a decent price. You're getting on for 1/3rd of the price of the LG 5k. Dell do decent monitors.

I've always liked the fact you can rotate to portrait. You can see more or your picture.

And for 'final comic art' board size of A3 (11x17 inches) this is ideal.

Credit Dell. They actually have a range of monitors.

Azrael.
Agreed. Good, old trusty monitors! You know what you’re getting into. No surprises. It is a real roll of the dice for some brands.

Hoping for the August 17th launch, I've got to the point where I can wait no longer. I need to have a functioning (and somewhat powerful) Mac set up ASAP for work and some home projects. I'll sit the first few gens of AS out and then adopt when the 2020 starts to show its age!

A great many need up to date production machines and are waiting for 'sole supplier' (Apple) to 'do their job...' so...they can get a machine to do their job.

Fortunately. It's about 3 weeks (21 days) away. So...

It looks like being 'mid-August.' (There's only 5 months left of this year as July is about done. So they'll have a bit to cram into the rest of this year... Looks like being a busy fall.)

As Sept' is the iPhone 12. And the AS 'Mac' (laptop probably...) for Oct' (maybe they'll squeeze an A14x iPad into the fall Mac event...alongside Big Sur.)

You'll be stone called pished and passed out before you hit the floor.

As for 'long.' Is it ever 'long enough' or 'big enough' or 'fast enough?'

*points to Apple. Release the goddamn iMac...
