Seeing you mention Planet Coaster and Planet Zoo makes me think of an important question. I want (- when I have a capable machine) to play these. Will they be playable on AS via Steam? If not, I might have to get this intel iMac...

Since they are Windows only and ARM will come without bootcamp windows support i don't think you will be able to play these. At the very least for now. I think Linux you can still install, so maybe windows will be back a couple of years in. But will these old games be supported on these chips? I don't know. Once again happy to still get a Intel iMac and see ARM find it's way for a few years.

The death of the Fusion drive has been a long time coming. Finally! However, to be truthful, I was thinking they'd keep it one more iteration, until the new chassis dropped.

A while ago i dropped a video here were someone of the wall street journal posted a video of his new 2019 iMac with fusion drive being outperformed by his very old iMac due to how demanding the laster MacOS versions are. I don't think Apple likes news like that and they have not been that great lately in terms of making their software high performance streamlined... it's rather wastfull both on mobile and the Mac lineup. So they pretty much had to, probably even a year or two late to "had to" replace it.

10 Core i9.
5700XT.
1TB SSD.

It is done.

Arriving Augst 18th-20th.

Azrael.

Darn. Shipping times already rising.
The shop i am ordering in closed 30 minutes after i became aware of the upgrade, dident get the sales person on phone. Send an e-mail, hopefully this should be set and don in the morning. I hope america dos not order like crazy and the night sets me back another week. But well, at least there is a date now. A week more or less dos not matter to much with certainty that it WILL arrive shortly.

I have a Late 2015 iMac. Would upgrading to this make a noticeable difference? I have a hard time with large Blender scenes currently.

If this update was absolute trash, my backup plan was to wait for the AS iMac and get a game streaming service, Windows PC in the cloud, heat, sound, and maintenance someone else's problem. Still probably my trajectory despite today's purchase. However, look into Shadow, it's got a wait list but it looks promising with minimal lag and will most probably have an AS app or port its iPad app by the time AS is released.

Well,
if you have a hard time it's worth upgrading. Especially if you earn money with these renders.

I am no expert but...

Yes the newest high iMac will be faster, but it should be noted that Blender is dropping support for OpenCL, because Apple is dropping support for OpenCL. Apple is also dropping support for OpenGL. And AFAIK, Blender isn't working on Metal support.

@DrRadon Why don't you order it from Apple directly ?

I had my MacBook screen replaced last year at a Apple licensed repair store and they send me a letter in the beginning of the year that i got one purchase in 2020 that will be 5% of. Thats a good chunk of money looking at my total value of round about 4400€. So i will take the extra couple of days it will take to drive at their place and get to me. Or maybe ill pick it up and haul it by train and bus.

No Metal support ... Ouch.

If no metal support, don't invest in a Mac if you still want to use blender.

There is a picture of the approx 1/4 of the back of the iMac on the Tech specs page.

There are no new vents at the bottom. The same "RAM door" is there ( so probably exit vent isn't any bigger either) . If can't bring in and exit more air not sure how the cooling system is going to improve move. Have to move more air to get better.

the Intel package may be able to more efficiently transfer more heat. Likewise a higher maybe for the AMD GPUs. Apple probably has a better "governor" on the heat getting too high. But besides that probably not much in terms of new capacity with same case and same dimensions.
Thank you. That settles it. I want a silent computer at home. Three months ago, I would have bought one without hesitating. Hope for a 24 inch before Christmas and have to survive with an iPad Pro and an MBP 15,4 2014 until then.

Nice chatting with you all!

if you run 32 bit then its not safe...the rest should work fine under rosetta 2 at least on mac mini everything runs fine

no, if you dont have a lot of glare..no. It depends on your environment .
Thank you. Let’s hope i works out fine with Rosetta. I still have an intel Mac as backup.

How do you think gaming will be on the 2020 IMac?

I would like to stay with apple and with the new 2020 im still able to run bootcamp. The reason i bring that up is i was planning on starting to get into IRacing at some point down the road but you have to run it on windows for it to work. Am i better off just buying a PC for that instead or would you think the 10 core top of the line 27" suffice?

You bet this is the last Intel iMac (27" I mean).

We 'might' get Intel iMac Pro but for standard 27" iMac this is it. Next 27" iMac is AS that will trash this garbage out the water.

:)

This will not be the last iMac.
Probably not even the last Intel iMac.

I suppose we will know in a few days how much they switched around internally and if there is anything don with the space the fusion drive left. Would be kinda sad if they did not at least use that space to spread things out a bit more for better thermals.

Good for you. I'm not buying anything until I see reviews for noise and heat with different configs.
Also, going to Vancouver next week so I hope to see XDR in person (hopefully) and the iMac nano thing too if possible.
Lets see.

Also, do you feel that resale of this last 27" iMac will be bad in few years time as we will all be on AS or will it actually be better as some will still look for Intel? I lean towards terrible resale value. You?

I noticed this on the press comms. "... higher fidelity speakers, and studio-quality mics..." would be interesting to find out what this means in real terms. Hopefully the reviews at the end of the week test and pick this up.

I don't think it will be that bad, but yeah, it will take a redesign out value hit, bit probably not as bad as you might think. The value will be in the bang for the buck compared to what's coming and depending on how many people start selling or trading them in when the time comes.

Beast config, I looked at that, tempted. But that’s £3.5k in UK. Until I tapped in my 2017 i7 8GB 1TB Radeon 580 serial for a trade-in figure... it said £250 - laughable. It’s probably got more rare scrap metal in than that. Anyway I don’t _need_ an upgrade, I just _want_ one. WIll wait for AS step change.

They said studio quality mics for the 2020 iPad Pro too, and according to reviews it's roughly as bad as the 2018 model.
