Yes...the NAS, think we had a chat about that before...

So, if I had the iMac Intel connected to an AS iMac 24 via an ethernet cable? It would be rocket powered Mac to Mac copying of files from one to the other?

If both have 10gbps ethernet, yes. Max theoretical speed is 1250 MB/s. Still far from Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 3 connection (5000 MB/s) but works on CAT6a/CAT7 cable while Thunderbolt 3 can only have 2m cable.

spec'ing mine out now: Is it really worth it to upgrade RAM myself? can someone shoot me a link where I'd buy the RAM? I'd want 32GB in the end.

Maxing out the GPU & CPU, 1TB SSD. Not getting the screen upgrade, as I dont have a ton of light on my display (thats really the purpose right)?

So I could just use the TB3 to TB3 connection instead to get files over from one mac to the other mac?

Speaking of which, I need to put my older Mac into 'target mode' to get my files of it...I can do that with a TB3 cable from teh new iMac to the 'dead' one? (As the hard drives still work...)

It's here, anthony!!!

I hope you get the one you're after. Maxing out the cpu and gpu and a 1TB SSD is where I'm going to be. Great minds think alike... A bit of future proofing there.

For the price of a 27" iMac, with 512 gb ssd, 5700XT, and 10-core processor, you can get the following:

- 49" monitor
- Mac Mini
- $1700 PC to game on with better performance across the board

The pricing for the all-in-one design is totally lost on me. Unless you're living in a 400 sq ft studio, where every inch of space counts, I don't get it.

Looks like the idea is definitely lost on you. But that isn’t a surprise considering your post count and join date.🤷‍♂️

I'd like to brag a little here - I predicted this exact timing of iMac release, and no redesign, being so confident, I even said "I have spoken!" - more importantly, I have provided valid reasoning, not just pointless speculation:

(1)A lame Intel iMac is coming out very soon - early August, maybe even next week

Oh, and like I argued from day one - THERE WILL BE NO RE-DESIGN OF THE INTEL iMAC!!!

I have spoken!

Last iMac and logically no redesign. What to do? Play it safe with this iMac or wait for a cool AS iMac?

Are we absolutely sure there is no change in the cooling system? Obviously not iMac Pro (shame on you) grade but there can still be improvement. 125W with the old cooling system will be problematic but perhaps compensated for with cooler GPU?

If you want to future proof you go for 2TB SSD i feel.
I constantly got my 1TB full, especially with Photo and Video obviously. But still. I was thinking a bit about the games i want to reinstall... 50gb Starcraft 2, Planet coaster and Planet zoo also a lot each, i think anno 1800 also was sitting at over 40gb, x com 2 i never played due to the old computer being to old. Sims 4 is massive by now. Super easy to fill up the first 500gb without even having time to actually play all these games.

It is weird the new Macs (of all models) are not coming with WiFi 6 since Intel is supporting it natively

Avoiding Intel's WiFi ? After the collapse of Intel's ability to get a 5G modem chip out on time. Can easily see some "don't give them any more radio work than we are pragmatically required to" at this point.

I suspect though that there is also something about Apple's tweaks to "handoff" and short range Wifi that they just don't want to put effort into with Intel's chipset.

and I would expect Apple's usual WiFi+BT chip supplier has an option.

iPhone 11 teardown has a Apple/Murata chip. That seems to be distinctly off from the main line up.

Guess that will be an Apple Silicon differentiator.

Doubtful. It is probably still a separate discrete chip that they just will put effort into integrating with the Apple SoC ( and no driver work for Intel. ). It is probably far more lack of software effort and integration testing then the SoC itself. Apple saving some bucks, not a technical issue.

This will not be the last iMac.
Probably not even the last Intel iMac.

I suppose we will know in a few days how much they switched around internally and if there is anything don with the space the fusion drive left. Would be kinda sad if they did not at least use that space to spread things out a bit more for better thermals.

I dont know if its safe...if under load will be hot, will affect the internals...the safest bet is the AS i think based on the mac mini dev kit vs intel one

i bet is the last 27" intel imac.. no wonder there is no 21.5" intel imac since all the 10th gen intel and dgpu for the 21.5" are on the market

Excited to have a true drafting work station! 1TB is good for me as I'm not a gamer and won't be keeping media files on this. Affinity Photo files are my largest, and most are in the cloud anyways.

A lot of NAS units with a TB3 connection actually run NW over the TB3 port so are still 10Gb speeds. My QNAP is like that. Still tons faster if you're copying around loads of stuff.

Also, 10Gbe on the iMac Pro units, and on my Mac Mini, isn't that happy with a direct connection to my 10Gbe QNAP NAS - it only works reliably with a switch in the middle. Very irritating. It could of course be different with other NAS units.

10Gbe Mac to Mac (iMac Pro to Mac Mini) works well though, and is rock solid.

I've one of the 10 core i9s turning up - I'll do all the performance tests and stuff once it's arrives.

18th was the Apple store restock date for all Apple stores in europe. I found that, not "the dumb twitter accounts".

I must have mixed it with the 24th prediction, there were several last week and many deleted tweets, please excuse my adding your thoughtful prediction to their pile of shame.

Yes TB3 is still a lot faster as I said. Some QNAP NAS implements both. But I don't understand, you say you are not getting TB3 speeds because of QNAP specific implementation ?

A switch is always better.

There is a picture of the approx 1/4 of the back of the iMac on the Tech specs page.

There are no new vents at the bottom. The same "RAM door" is there ( so probably exit vent isn't any bigger either) . If can't bring in and exit more air not sure how the cooling system is going to improve move. Have to move more air to get better.

the Intel package may be able to more efficiently transfer more heat. Likewise a higher maybe for the AMD GPUs. Apple probably has a better "governor" on the heat getting too high. But besides that probably not much in terms of new capacity with same case and same dimensions.
