Excited to have a true drafting work station! 1TB is good for me as I'm not a gamer and won't be keeping media files on this. Affinity Photo files are my largest, and most are in the cloud anyways.

It will be mighty fine for Affinity Photo. Very good software tech' that makes full use of being on the Mac platform.

I have a Late 2015 iMac. Would upgrading to this make a noticeable difference? I have a hard time with large Blender scenes currently.

A ten core you would see the difference on rendering. No doubt about that. Check out the cinebench scores for a quad core vs a 10 core.

This ten core just about hangs with the the previous gen 16 core thread ripper. Very nearly.

I am no expert but...

Yes the newest high iMac will be faster, but it should be noted that Blender is dropping support for OpenCL, because Apple is dropping support for OpenCL. Apple is also dropping support for OpenGL. And AFAIK, Blender isn't working on Metal support.

Open GL is being deprecated (and for good reason...)

Funnily enough, Blender seems to be one of the open source projects Apple is supporting in the transition to Apple Silicon... (See one of the Max Power YouTube videos about where Apple is going for AS.)

Maybe Apple had a plan when they 'toasted' Open GL.

But for now, Blender will still work on an Intel Mac. I'll download it and try it on my iMac when it arrives...(I already had it on this iMac before it fried.)

I had my MacBook screen replaced last year at a Apple licensed repair store and they send me a letter in the beginning of the year that i got one purchase in 2020 that will be 5% of. Thats a good chunk of money looking at my total value of round about 4400€. So i will take the extra couple of days it will take to drive at their place and get to me. Or maybe ill pick it up and haul it by train and bus.

Let me know when you've ordered yours.

Azrael.

No Metal support ... Ouch.

If no metal support, don't invest in a Mac if you still want to use blender.

Blender is one of the open source projects Apple is supporting...according to the WWDC dev' videos...to allow support...to come to the Mac...

Intrigue. (Check out the Max Tech' video...on this thread...re: AS and the future...)

My personal opinion. Blender support will come to AS Macs. It's now metal or get off the Mac train.

Any dev' can now write and deploy to two powerful platforms. An AS14 Mac and iPad. That's going to be about ten million units a month.

Thank you. Let’s hope i works out fine with Rosetta. I still have an intel Mac as backup.

This update is really for those that don't have a working Mac or can't survive with a 'flagging' production Mac that is on it's last legs and need 'a faster one' for production £££.

Also, it's for those who want 100% Intel and Bootcamp (and many will...) it's 'just fine.'

It's a worthy 'last' update to the Intel iMac. With the caveats of design and heat efficiency.

You should be fine with an iPad and a 'back up' Mac.

How do you think gaming will be on the 2020 IMac?

I would like to stay with apple and with the new 2020 im still able to run bootcamp. The reason i bring that up is i was planning on starting to get into IRacing at some point down the road but you have to run it on windows for it to work. Am i better off just buying a PC for that instead or would you think the 10 core top of the line 27" suffice?

Better than the 2019 model which was, actually, quite respectable.

The (so last year...) 5700XT will make light work of any game at HD. And HD is where gaming is in the mainstream sense.

And that means Mac or PC gaming. There is Bootcamp.

I want to use Bootcamp to start 'dual platforming' my creative workflow. And for that 'one game I like to play...'

Darn. Shipping times already rising.
The shop i am ordering in closed 30 minutes after i became aware of the upgrade, dident get the sales person on phone. Send an e-mail, hopefully this should be set and don in the morning. I hope america dos not order like crazy and the night sets me back another week. But well, at least there is a date now. A week more or less dos not matter to much with certainty that it WILL arrive shortly.

I found it's timing of release quite interesting.

It was nice to get ahead of the American base. That's why I got my order in at 7.30pm last night. If I left it a few more days I thought the delivery times would go up by a week...or even a month given current circumstances.

I've waited (as have we all...) quite long enough.

I noticed this on the press comms. "... higher fidelity speakers, and studio-quality mics..." would be interesting to find out what this means in real terms. Hopefully the reviews at the end of the week test and pick this up.

Good catch.

I guess this means no redesign this year? What are the odds they release an ARM Imac now that they released this one

It's Apple.

They'll happily release an AS Mac this October. High odds on it being the laptop. Or two laptops. MBPro 13 and the Consumer AS Air.

For the iMac. It's the same consumer product as the laptops, price and performance wise.

They could release MBPro13, Air, iMac24 and the Mac Mini.

They're all the same thing in different form factors.

One thing for sure. They're all going to get much better gpus than they currently have. And tuned better to the software which will make them perform much better than the raw numbers suggest.

Azrael.

This year you think or this time next yr?

24 inch? Mac October event?

Possible.

Early 2021 seems more likely to me.

I tend to think they'll go for the higher unit sales of laptops 1st. £££.

Then the desktop iMac later.

A 6 month gap between the Intel iMac and the AS iMac24 puts us at Jan' next year.

I remember buying the iPad 3 and 6 months later Apple released the iPad 4. :/

Yes, I'm betting on a 2020 Q4 release for Arm Mac laptops, and that there will be no Arm Macs released before October. Why? Cuz Apple can't release an Arm Mac on Catalina. The frameworks aren't there. Big Sur will be an absolute requirement, and probably won't get released until October.

iMac next year sometimes, although I'm thinking earlier rather than later in 2021.

Why do you say for sure? I don't think that at all.

Went with:
3.6 10-Core I9
32 GB Ram
1TB SSD
Radeon Pro 5700XT with 16GB GDDR
10 Gigabit Ethernet
Standard Glass

not expected to deliver until Aug 18th-20th though. I got a magic track pad 2 but must not have seen that you can upgrade the keyboard to one with a number pad. Not a huge deal and I'll probably just buy the new logi keyboard anyways as I have and love the logi MX master 3 for drafting.

Concerned with what others have said about cooling, but other than that I'm pretty happy with this update. Especially 10 Gigabit ethernet, I'm pretty sure that can solve some very long print job's for me. Most excited about the GPU. For what I do in my work flow, it's a big update. Totally bummed about the lack of a physical update but alas, I do in fact need a machine now, and this just means I'll update my laptop first to Apple silicon in a couple years.

anthony13,

Well done. 18-20th. Same delivery date as me.

Same as me. But I went with 1 gigabit ethernet. And 8 gigs of ram. I'll buy the ram separate.

You're going to have a kick az rig there. Grats!!!

The GPU is the best ever in an iMac. 16 gig of gpu ram. Some were skeptical that would happen. And if you have any gpu releated rendering workflow...you can eGPU a big NAvi2 later to augment that.

The design may be iStale. But that is a substantial spec boost. No question.

Because they can't do any worse.

Check out the Max Tech' videos for the exciting direction in power and efficiency (And therefore performance...) Apple's GPUs are going to be heading into.

The evidence in iPhone and iPad is that Apple created cpus/gpus lead the competition.

The Intel IGPU is mediocre. That's being polite.

Azrael.

Just bought one guys!

3,6‑GHz 10‑core Intel Core i9
8 GB 2666‑MHz DDR4‑memory
Radeon Pro 5700 XT with 16 GB GDDR6
1 TB SSD
Gigabit Ethernet

I never thought I would ever buy a computer with two times as much VRAM as RAM 😀

And thanks everyone for making the wait more bearable 😊

Congrats, krazzix.

Yeah. My gpu has twice as much ram as my system ram. :p

A chest thumping spec you have.

Azrael.

This will make the 1-2 year wait for the 32" AS imac or the AS mac pro much easier now.

Aye.

This update is worthy for those that need it. It's certainly eclipsed the 2019 model in specs and price.

And now we have this the countdown for the AS iMac has indeed begun...

Intel iGPUs are Ok for their intended use and include the requisite video decoders.

The more important comparisons here though are with the AMD options.

OMG, he’s done it. So happy for you!!!! <3.
My wait for a 32in iMac continues...

Cheers gusping, :DD

I had to walk the talk (and *coughs*, I've done alot of talking....)

If I'd been in your shoes with a working Mac. I would have waited. (As was my intention to wait until this fall...and the shake up of the PS5/RDNA2/Ampere/AS tech convergence...) But my iMac fried.

There were a few things to consider:

1. My data on my other 'dead' iMac. Got to get that over. I need 100% Intel compat' on that.
2. Bootcamp. (I could have bought a separate PC ((and still intend to at some point...)) but with Bootcamp I set up my dual platform workflow straight away and play that 'game I'm addicted to...'
3. It's available now. AS isn't. AS iMac is 5, 6 or longer months away even for the low end version.
4. All my software works on Intel for sure.
5. I will be able to get Big Sur.

Not cheap. It does double as a Mac/PC. So if we split £3400 it's £1700 Mac. £1700 PC. And 5k monitors cost £1300 in LG language.

...it is basically an iMac Pro £4999 with a massive price cut (as I predicted...). It is a worthy (spec wise...) last Intel iMac. (10 cores. 5700XT with 16 gig of vram. Hopefully, they've tweaked the internal cooling to match.)

And an epitaph to the Intel iMac.

As AS will be for the Mac AS revolution.

Azrael.

The more important comparisons here though are with the AMD options.

Apple have to be pretty confident of beating out mediocre Intel iGPU and 'last year' gpu options in the form of 5700XT.

If Apple turn up...they'll still beat them both.

They AS software/hardware tuning on their side. Intel and AMD won't match that. On top of the performance numbers.

The one thing Intel and AMD are both weak in is power efficiency. Regardless, it looks like their time on the Mac platform is coming to an end.

I doubt Apple will release worse gpus options than so-so Intel iG and last year tech' AMD gpu.

Azrael.

Finally! Glad to finally see an update come through. Okay, here are my thoughts regarding my situation, anyone feel free to chime in and tell me your thoughts.

Currently rocking a 2009 27in iMac that is barely hanging on. Been looking at upgrading for sometime, but this has to be the year to maximize business deduction. Also don't want to wait for redesign since I'm worried Apple will do away with removable RAM. So here's my thought:

Buy a pretty much maxed out new iMac. Only specs I'm not maxing are the nano-glass, SSD will be 2TB, and RAM i'll do base. Not sure how fast I'll upgrade the RAM to 128GB on my own, but that's the ultimate plan. Is there any cons to upgrading the RAM myself fairly quickly? Also will my computer be lagging if I max out the processor and graphics card, but leave RAM at base 8GB for now? Might be able to pull it off in the next few months, but probably would like to wait on the RAM as a X-Mas gift to myself.

Guess my main concern is will having on 8GB of RAM to start cause a problem with maxed out processor and graphics card? Don't want to damage the machine and shorten it's lifespan. Thanks!

Do it.

If I can order RAM online and install it...anyone can. *frightens me to death.*

I'm going to order my 2x16 gigs or RAM. Can't have system ram being less than teh 16 on tech GPU. :O

Azrael.

Order RAM now from OWC, it will probably arrive before the iMac.

8GB is laughable - you really don't want to have that unless its just for few days waiting for the delivery.
So order at the same time as the iMac. $135 or so for 32GB is pretty much free compared to what Apple charges.
:)

:)

Should have had 16 gigs of Ram on the T2 or 3.

I like the parting quip on that post. :pPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP

Azrael.

I'm still debating between the 8 core i7 or the 10 core i9. I mostly use my machine for audio work as well as development - just trying to see if I would benefit from the 10 core or whether that money could be used elsewhere...

Anyone ordering the VESA mount version?

I have a 2014 5k and the stand annoys me. Is there any obvious downside I am missing - other than it MAYBE being less desirable on the used market - or maybe more due to how few there are out and about!

At the same time you’re also risking limited software support down the road. I want to say Apple stopped OS X support for PPC only after five years in.

Edit: just checked. PPC support lasted from 1999 -2005

5-6 years will be fine for this.

At that point? AS will be like warp speed compared to this.
