What’s the feeling on gaming via Bootcamp on this new iMac? Presumably you’d need to go up from the base model with its 5300 GPU?

I’m talking about games like Football Manager, Planet Coaster, Planet Zoo. The last 2 are Windows only so I’m either going to need to play them on this iMac via Bootcamp, or get a Windows machine alongside the AS iMac.

To get the 5500XT model is £2299 in the UK which is a fair bit more than I’d hoped to pay but may work out cheaper than the alternative 2 machine approach...

I'd get the 5500XT as a minimum. I was considering that one on the T3 iMac. I didn't think that and an 8 core was bad for £2300 and the 500 gig SSD.

For playing via Bootcamp in HD. Should be fine. The 5700 isn't such as bad option either. Most of the XT's performance for a good bit less?

£2300. Yes. You got a 2300£ Mac. But you also get the £2300 for free.

Got my Flatmates student ID.
Thx to whoever told me about just being able to use any adress andante tax id after the login.
Actually upgraded to 10 gigabit internet and trackpad and still am paying less then with my offer from the vendor.
Selling the AirPods will pay for my 32gb RAM action.

Happy days.

Actually a bit annoyed right now. Could have just added the student kit for like 210€ with all the pro software instead of just getting motion 5 and final cut for 325€ at proper non student price yesterday.
To late now, w00ps.

Of all the leaks it looks like Kuo is correct with his Intel iMac update so we should hopefully see a redesigned 24 inch iMac with Apple Silicon late this year for the launch of MacOS 11.

Be nice to see the iMac 24 with MacOS 11.

Never mind.

If it's any consolation, I payed alot more for the the original Final Cut back in the day when it's price was very lofty indeed.

Compared to that £299 still feels like a great bargain for such potent software.

I can criticise Apple for many things.

But software capability and value isn't one of them.

So, Dr. You've ordered the iMac from Apple?

Azrael.

Every Youtuber makes it sound like it is the best thing since sliced bread !!!! When will it end? I wonder if anyone has got a direct answer from Apple as to why they charge such obscene amounts for RAM upgrade?

I'm very surprised the Apple press don't put the boot in over RAM prices.

Will Apple hold their review machines if they do criticise?

Apple does some good things. But they need to be called out on stuff like RAM prices.

Azrael.

we will sure see at least 2 different macs in the fall, the smaller imac and at least 1 laptop
Apple did some work for this year...
-ios14+ipadOS are okish, the usual not a very big step, but still...
-macOS UI changed to be touch friendly also (something that is still lacking on my windwos side since win8),
-the begining of arm apple devices
-probably we will see some ipads too this fall
-the iphones...
-i can let around 10% chances to see the AR glasses at least presented with the launch 6 months later as usual,
-also maybe airtags ,
-and i almost bet Apple will release their new Qi charging pad...since they want next year to go port-less (the same strategy applied on iphone 7 with the headphone jack removed...and introducing the airpods),
-probably we will see also the bluetooth over ear headphones

Even on this times, based on these if they come true almost all....they will have a Beautiful Christmas

that it has been great sailing.

I am now waiting to see what Catalina is like on the 2020 iMac. I might as well as hang out for two weeks and hopefully Max does more in-depth videos,

Max showing that the 5700XT and it's codecs are putting even the Mac Pro to the sword.

The new iMac is a sound video creatives machine.

5700XT 16 gig Vram.

Azrael.

Yeah. It's apple now. Even dished in the 10€ extra for speedy shipping.

I agree on the software, especially with Adobe taking pretty much the same for just a year (assuming that you are sort of locked in on video). I will now try to figure out if i also want to buy compressor or if i am fine just leaving that to FinalCut.
Still hard planing to let go of adobe. I hope the affinity products hold up well for me, i just started getting into illustrator... but in essence i just use it to rar. I'll probably go for one of those 89€ "ps and lightroom for a year" subscriptions.

I'm curious about the

ATV A12.
iMac 24 with Big Sur. (*Yes, Sir!*)
iPad 12.9 (A14x?)
The PS5.

With Big Sur...it seems that at some point Apple is going to launch a 'Mac' 'touch' device of some sort.

Yep. Final Cut for its price is no brainer.

The sub for PS and LR will be cheaper that way.

But I'd look into getting Affinity Photo in sale. (Fantastic software can be had for £28 in a sale.) Just in case you get tired of subbing into the Adobe £££ machine.

What Mac spec did you go for, Dr?

Azrael.

The dies are the same but the clocking makes a substantive difference. The 580 sags from

"up to 6.2 TFLOPS"
https://www.amd.com/en/products/graphics/radeon-rx-580

to with Pro 580
" Peak up to 5.5 TFLOPS"

The 580X probably clawed a bit of that back, but there is much bigger gap there with the Polaris , 14nm (maybe 12nn in X case ) implementations and the Navi , 7nm solution.

I see. I saw on the 'Max' video that the 5500XT isn't that far ahead of the 580 in general terms. But in the codecs it should do better.

The 5700XT, I'm looking forward to kicking the tires on that one. Upto...7-ish terraflops in an iMac. Nice. Never thought I'd see the day...

(Navi 2 is supposed to be upto 18-20 teraflops??? Still. Can add that later via eGPU if necessary.)

Azrael.

RAM is just the same as last years right?
  • CT2K16G4S266M <- this at crucial. Looking at about 125€

Think so, Dr.

On Crucial's website, they define it by 'Mac' product family. So if you click on the iMac category...it's the 2666 memory etc. Also available on Amazon from Samsung, OCW, Crucial...

Prices vary from £118-£140 depending on vendor.

Azrael.

Yes I know but RX cards are usually faster than Apple's Pro cards. That's why I think RX 5500XT vs RX 580 is equivalent to Apple's Pro 5500Xt vs Pro 580X. Just look at the FP32 TFLOPS: 5.3 for Pro 5500XT and 5.2 for RX 5500XT. Almost the same.

Aye.

If I was buying the iMac...(and I did...) I'd be going for that 5700XT with 16 gigs of RAM.

Might as well go for that one.

ok guys i havent had a Mac with catalina how bad is it compare to mojave

I have a near top spec 2019 iMac I purchased in March and have had zero issues with Catalina. Overall this has been pretty significantly the best computer I’ve ever owned.

On the topic of cooling/noise, I have the 6-core i5 and granted my work is not CPU-heavy but I would say I am keenly sensitive to fan noise (I was involved in building “silent” PC’s back in the 90’s) and I’ve never noticed the fan on this iMac. My Thinkpad X1 Carbon sitting right next to it is clearly audible, often while sitting seemingly idle. I work mostly in Creative Cloud - typically Illustrator/InDesign/Photoshop, in web browsers, and with a Windows VM running - often having 55GB+ of my 64GB of RAM used, so a different kind of “power user” for which this iMac is perfectly suited.

Hopefully they have in fact improved the cooling system in this update even more - but as is common here - I suspect the complaints are driven by a vocal few and a great deal of actual owners will never actually have an issue.

3,6 GHz 10‑Core Intel Core i9 Prozessor
8 GB 2666 MHz DDR4
Radeon Pro 5700 XT 16 GB GDDR6
2 TB SSD
10 Gigabit Ethernet (i figured to just get it for future proving now that i had a bit more money due to the edu price)
Magic Trackpad 2 (i never use my Apple Mouse, so i figured with the money saved i might give it a shot, worst case it goes to ebay)
Magic Keyboard with number pad – German

Looking at 4.150€, 40 less than at my vendor, but with 10gb ethernet, trackpad and AirPods included.

I hope this will last me eight years as this 21,5 one did. Wich unlike yours actually still is running smooth for everything besides video editing -> asides the finder freezing and OS support ending at catalina.

The 580X was a paid option.

You now have the equivalent but in RDNA1, lower power consumption, lower thermals, better performance in most use cases for base price.

Where is the problem ????????????

...and I think in the Max video...it shows the XT series seems to have far superior video codecs.

That's 2 or 3 times the performance!!! Depending on example.

So, in general terms the 580/5500xt may seem a much of a much ness. But as you point out. There are plenty of variables to measure where the RDNA1 is way ahead.

Well done, Dr!!!

Great spec.

That 2 TB will keep you going for a while. And the GPU is gangster!!! ;)

Spot on.

Hope you enjoy it. You've been very patient...

Azrael.

Okay, did some tests to check the performance. Keep in mind I bought the mid 27 and I haven't upgraded the RAM yet since I'm waiting for that to come in the mail.

finally an upgrade.

my needs have changed somewhat since 2014 when i got my last iMac (3.5 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5) and these days all i really do is some light photo editing/managing, video stuff on a very small scale and some music editing on a small scale.

As much as I'd like to get the top of the line model, my needs probably don't require it and im leaning towards this: "
  • 3.3GHz 6-core 10th-generation Intel Core i5 processor
I'd upgrade to the 1 TB drive.

My question is the nano-glass. is that worth the $500 upgrade?
