The delays further cement my opinion that we won't see a newly designed 24" iMac with apple silicon in the fall. I think with all the delays, rumored iPad updates, the iPhone, Apple Watch, apple silicon MacBook that is all but confirmed, an iMac on top of it all seems like a lot when people are just getting their new intel iMacs.

I'm still holding out hope that we will see a ~24" Apple Silicon iMac this Fall. Not because I want one (24" is too small), but because I want to see what Apple has in mind for an AS desktop Mac for when they do come out with it's "big brother".

I agree. If anyone out there is deperate for a new line of Apple Silicon iMac's I think you are still in for a decent wait. Even if it's scheduled soonish just look at the difficulty Apple is having with parts supply of a model they've basically had for 10+ years.

Now we are talking new chip tech and form factor and we think Apple will be right on time with all of this? Plus, this is a COVID world now. Supply and demand rules have been redefined. I buy all kinds of audio recording tech for my studio. there's about 10 things I'd love to have in my posession now but there are major delays in getting products, especially electronics mass produced.

Tim might say 2 year transition but it's not that hard for him to open an event with "We were hoping to have this in your hands by now but due to complications with supplies around the world...blah, blah blah."

This isn’t new. I remember I had to wait a month when I ordered the 2011 BTO iMac. There was even a thread here with people drawing pictures of hijacking a boat they were supposedly on

You can see the story of my order on the last few pages. It got delayed and almost canceled due to a system hick-up that apples normal support was neither cleared nor prepared to take care of.

There was a fair amount of rumors of a 24 inch iMac with iPad Pro design. As the Intel iMac did not get a redesign, it points to a AS having these features. A bit early for rumors WWDC2021 so it is easy to believe that an autumn release is planned. The 21.5 inch did not get a significant boost. The 24 inch is likely targeted to replace the 21.5 inch and low end 27 inch so Apple will likely not delay the AS 24 inch even if there is a shiny new 27 iMac (in a very old case) around because the two products are targeted to different buyers. Delays because of lack of components is of course possible.

If an AS iMac wasn't coming until WWDC 21 Apple would undoubtedly have upgraded the 21.5" from its 7th & 8th generation Intels at the same time the 27" got its revision. Makes no sense to have left the 21.5 unless it's getting an update and according to Kuo a 24" AS is due this year. Might slip in Q1.

I still think there is a chance for the smaller (~24") AS iMac this year based on how many rumors said it was coming. The main reason I see for a 2021 ship date would be because it would have a MiniLED display and production of products with MiniLED panels appears to be slipping due to later than planned production ramp.

I don't think we can expect the smaller iMac to come with miniled. Probably come to higher end devices first. The China times rumour of a 23" iMac this year said it would be a lower priced device like the iPhone SE, and miniled undoubtedly adds to cost.

Hello, CWallace. Do you think there will be a new iMac Pro with Intel on board this fall?

I remember the rumors about the 27" mini-LED panel, but there is talk about the 21st year.

I am hoping so. It makes little to no sense to offer Nanotexture Glass on the new iMac and not also offer it on the iMac Pro even if the iMac Pro was never going to be upgraded, otherwise. So I am hoping that lack of an NTG option for the iMac Pro now means it will be an option alongside a general component upgrade this fall.

I still don’t think there’s AS iMacs this year. Power and battery life are the biggest impact and that comes with laptops which is certainly where they will start and get that buzz.
Smaller iMac WWDC larger iMac next fall makes far more sense.

What tech is available for iMac Pro? RDNA2 (I assume - still not released)
Any new good CPUs?

I think they should drop the price of iMac Pro and update it with RDNA2 and some other good tech. Beefed up iMac should be similar price as entry iMac Pro.
But has intel made any progress on the server chips? Is there anything worth upgrading?

RDNA2 would certainly allow for quieter machine :)

What tech is available for iMac Pro?

Intel has released updated workstation Xeon CPUs last year (W-2000 series). AMD should have RDNA2/Navi 2x out by the end of the year. MCK rumored the iMac Pro would also move to a 27" MiniLED display. The iMac Pro is also still on the older Alpine Ridge TB3 controller (the newer Titan Ridge TB3 controller can drive the Pro Display XDR at native 6K).

but are those xeon that much faster than current imac? as otherwise we might as well just let the imac pro die : )

The new iMac does cover a significant portion of the market the iMac Pro did three years ago. Now that it can have 128GB of RAM and 8TB of storage, the only things a new iMac Pro would offer is 14/18 cores, 256GB RAM and better GPUs and I am not sure that is enough to justify an upgrade now. That 27" MiniLED display could just as easily go into the "big brother" Apple Silicon iMac.

If Apple Silicon was not a thing, I think the iMac Pro would have been updated by now and the new iMac would not have offered as high memory/storage configurations.

But since Apple Silicon is a thing, I think the Mac Pro is going to be Apple's "Intel Answer" going forward for the "true pros" who use it to generate revenue and therefore the cost is (more or less) irrelevant. It is not (and never was) meant for "hobbyists"** who want a core chassis they can upgrade over a decade to maximize ROI like what many use(d) the 2006-2012 Mac Pro for.

** - And for the record, I mean no disrespect or disparagement with the term "hobbyist" and know that those folks did real work with their personal Mac Pros.

Random RAM thing i learned earlier today.
Apparently two sticks of RAM is better than four. So rather get two times 32GB than four times 16GB if you want 64GB of RAM.
Not sure if this is true for OS X as well, headed about it in a video that was for Windows concerning Premiere and After Effects RAM usage. Was quiet well don, were you could not only see the render time drop with more GB of RAM but also see the usage of each RAM brick (16gb having the RAM almost used at 100% while 64GB were more like 30GB usage per brick and the in-between 32GB at around 60% full).
