but are those xeon that much faster than current imac? as otherwise we might as well just let the imac pro die : )
The new iMac does cover a significant portion of the market the iMac Pro did three years ago. Now that it can have 128GB of RAM and 8TB of storage, the only things a new iMac Pro would offer is 14/18 cores, 256GB RAM and better GPUs and I am not sure that is enough to justify an upgrade now. That 27" MiniLED display could just as easily go into the "big brother" Apple Silicon iMac.
If Apple Silicon was not a thing, I think the iMac Pro would have been updated by now and the new iMac would not have offered as high memory/storage configurations.
But since Apple Silicon is a thing, I think the Mac Pro is going to be Apple's "Intel Answer" going forward for the "true pros" who use it to generate revenue and therefore the cost is (more or less) irrelevant. It is not (and never was) meant for "hobbyists"** who want a core chassis they can upgrade over a decade to maximize ROI like what many use(d) the 2006-2012 Mac Pro for.
** - And for the record, I mean no disrespect or disparagement with the term "hobbyist" and know that those folks did real work with their personal Mac Pros.
