I hope they switch now to all-flash. even macOS is more optimized for flash memory now than mechanical hard drive.

Lol. A software dev doesn’t need an iMac Pro. It’s a caprice, far from being a necessity, just like for recording podcasts. This was more a VR/AR thing I think, heavy video editing. A dev doesn’t really need a 16 core machine. A dev doesn’t require a Vega GPU.

Morning all,

BTO 21: less than a week (unchanged)
BTO 27: 3-4 weeks (unchanged)
BTO iMP: 1-2 weeks (decreasing from 2-3 weeks)

Does not compute to predict anything. It seem odd to add another model (23 inch) to a declining product segment.
*21 inch stays as "low cost" and morph into 23 inch at some point.
*iMP and 27 inch fuses (using iMP cooling and case and reduced bezels) to harbour the hot comet lake CPU and 5700 GPU.

This is not what I like to happen as I want an 23-24 inch iMac that looks like the iPP but scaled up and having MBP16 internals. Optional white or black color and a glass back like the iPhones. Stainless steel frame of course. Not at all low cost and absolutely not going to happen but we are here to exchange dreams and thoughts :).

Have a nice day!

Yesterday I found one 2019 refurbished iMac that was pretty awesome for 2,500 €. I was thinking to buy it but I have not waited some months to give up now. C'mon Tim!!

You managed to stay strong. Two days ago I took the plunge and purchased a discounted iMac Pro. I really needed a desktop mac and waiting till june for BTO was not an option. Standard config iMacs all came with a FD so I bit the bullet and went for the iMac pro with a ssd.

I have a feeling apple will launch iMacs on SSD soon with better thermals (and sustained workloads which I need for my workflow) and I'm going to hate myself but hey.

Stay strong.

So come on its coming so what do we think a new iMac is going to have?

Changed Design
Bigger screens thinner bezels - 23" and 29"
Memory starting at 16Gb
All Solid State storage with T2 chip starting at 256Gb
Slight bump in GPU
Screen tech the same as we have now
Tweaked keyboard and Trackpad / Magic mouse - maybe touchID?

Am I the only one that wants them to make the SSD accessable through the upgrade door in the back? That's all I want, for them keep the door and expand it, allowing to upgrade the RAM and ssd, maybe have 2 slots too!

Sorry, but this will not happen. Sooner or later, T2 will appear in iMac and then you will not be able to put your SSD even if you disassemble the computer.

I also wonder about the specs… and the price. The entry level is now $1099. If they give it a Retina display, a 256GB SSD and a dedicated GPU — then why would you buy a $799 Mac mini? Or would they only start from $1299?

The good thing is that the 4-port 13" MacBook Pro model now has 16GB RAM and the entry-level model now has an upgrade for only $100. Hopefully we will see something similar with the iMac. All of them having 16GB would of course be ideal, but Apple needs to make profit out of somewhere…

It also has the potential to simplify logistics for Apple. Just supply the iMac with one size of fixed SSD, allow the user to supplement with a second SSD of whatever size they wish. This is based on my belief that BTO options are so expensive because it is much more costly to supply a unique configuration instead of just churning out lots of identical units.

This is just my opinion, but I always considered the Mac mini to be an unreasonably expensive device. Trying to configure similar hardware between the Mini and iMac 21.5 (the are similar in many nodes) with a small price difference, we get an iMac with integrated 4K display, peripherals, built-in sound and discrete GPU. Mini can boast only a large number of ports and a slightly lower price...

Yep it's high time we get the 3 year old iMP thermals (or something better) to a regular iMac. How long they keep basic technological advancements from most of their customer base is just sad, especially if it's to sell a few iMPs to techies

Keep in mind that everything non-laptop represent a really, really small % of all computers sold at Apple. My friend working there (Apple store Montreal) says the ratio laptop:desktop they sell is somewhere in the 30:1 or 40:1. So at least 40 laptop sold for only one desktop (iMac, iMac Pro, Mac Mini, Mac Pro)
While it’s still necessary to have the iMac, Apple is not rushed to update them because it doesn’t represent a large portion of the computer sold.

That is likely not the true ratio across the whole supply line. It is easy to pick up a laptop in a store and carry it home. A 27" iMac is much more cumbersome, so a much higher percentage will order it online instead.
