I don't think they will show up on the 20th. This new iMac and MacBooks need a more important space, so I guess we will see some of them at WWDC or at the end of the year, when are the most important product presentations.

Back when all events were in-person, I would agree with you that MBP and iMac would wait till WWDC because they have done it plenty of times before. But now with these "pop-up" events, I see no reason why they could not show the new MBP and iMac alongside Air Tags and iPad Pros and whatever else they have planned.

I think they will try to keep the lineup as steady as possible, sticking to the old designs but with new innards. There is enough thats new even without a new chassis. A new iMac design might come 2022 or even later.

If that was the plan, they would have announced a 21.5" iMac with M1 alongside the Mac Mini, MacBook Pro 13" and MacBook Air last October.

No, M-powered iMacs will incorporate a new design alongside the M-powered 16" MacBook Pro and the new 14" MacBook Pro.

Nah. Software this year will not be big most likely or definitely not overall. Last year they did big thing with Big Sur so this year will be improvements, stability, security etc.
new iMac would be easily added there OR Mac Pro Mini showcased with ACD maybe?

I think you need to come to terms with WWDC having some hardware this year (unless its all dumped on us next week) :)
Who knows? We could possibly see large new features. Anything could happen. iPadOS only received minor changes last year.

Yes, that's precisely what I'm getting at.

I would definitely watch this video. It shares some interesting points that I didn't realize or think about.

How much do you think the new iMacs will cost when they come out? About the same as the current intel iMacs or more expensive?

My guess is base models will cost less, and upgraded models cost more.
Which will generate huge long threads and indecision about whether the upgrades are worthwhile.

For example, look at the 1600+ posts in this thread agonizing over whether to get 8GB or 16GB:

I could see the 24" starting at $1499 with 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD. The M1 is at least as fast as the i5 and I bet the GPU can hold it's own with the Radeon 560X so while it would be $200 more than the cheapest current iMac 4K, the performance benefits justify the price increase.

If the bigger model is 32" then I am hoping we see it at $1999 with 8GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD, though it might come with a 256GB SSD at that price. All depends on how expensive the 32" panel is and what kind of M-series SoC it comes with.

Whatever it costs, I plan to get the 32" with 16GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD and am hoping it falls between $2499 and $2699.

I doubt we will see replacement of 27" next week. I just don't see it for many reasons.
So maybe we will get iMac and that will be the small version but I just don't see the big one showing up before WWDC. Its just not happening.

I still think we’ll see new imacs no earlier than WWDC. I was frustrated when it comes to the imac redesign for many years. So, I keep my expectations lower. Right now, I’m using M1 Mac mini base model, it’s nice but it was a temporary solution for me until AS iMacs come out because the mainstream monitor market is full of garbage with matte coating that ruins all the joy of colors.

Hehehehehe.
To be honest though, seeing that it is actually an EVENT then I guess we need to get more than just iPads and Airtags. So, iMac IS a real possibility unless there is another device/thing to talk about.
What would be cool? Announce everything including the Apple consumer display. That would be an awesome event:

iPads Pro
Airtags (who cares about this crap anyway)
Apple TV
iMac
MBPs
Apple Cinema Display 2.0
Mac Mini update (so it gets M1X and you can plug in your newly awesome ACD)
Was it last September/October when Apple did an event and the only two products were the iPad Air and Apple Watch. So it's very possible that iPad Pro and AirTags is all we get.

Also, if the iPad Pro is on the same/similar chip as M1, then they'll hold off on the iMac with a more powerful chip until later this year - probably WWDC.

That's a good point actually. Wonder if we'll get a new 'more affordable' monitor too?

That's exactly what I've been saying. Redesigned 21.5" iMac at the April event, redesigned 27" iMac at WWDC or later in the year.

I don't think it'll increase in price. The base models and upgrades (if there are even many to talk about) will likely stay the same price. Intel cost Apple a lot of money for their processors. The "M" series is different and significantly less expensive to produce.

iMac to gain a new hinge and with it apple pencil support? putting my thin foil hat on, on the invite, you see different 'pencils' going at the same time. Could it be Apple doubling down on the added value of their pencil tech and pushing it to more devices than the ipad? iMac as digital canvas?

Precisely! I've been saying this for weeks. Spring event is iPads and iMac is WWDC (possibly later but that would only be if we get something different than M1 variant)

I really don't see iMac next week at all. In fact, I'll dare to say that it is just NOT happening next week.

I'm dying to get new iMac but having observed Apple for the past 15 years I just don't see it coming.

It will be again another 'lackluster' event that will just give us iPad Pro (which is instant buy for me most likely) and maybe something else (like the bloody fk ing airtags no one really cares about) :D

That will be about it. If we get lucky we might get Apple TV update but thats a big IF.

Everything else is WWDC or later.

With Lifuka etc. on the horizon WWDC is just perfect platform for that.

I would tend to agree, but then why the event? Last year Magic Keyboard and iPad Pro refreshed dropped as website refresh and I think that was good enough. Why would airtags warrant air time? Maybe Apple is just more ready now than it was a year ago when it comes to digital events but I think that doing too many of them definitely brings format fatigue in the viewers eye (esp. empty ones at that). Don't get me wrong, I love the shots from the Apple HQ BUT half what is said is a tad overdone.

I don't really see why Apple would have to hold the iMac (and, by extension, the 14" and 16" MBP) to WWDC.

M1X will almost certainly be the M1 with more performance cores and either an additional TB controller or the existing TB controller will now be able to support 4 ports. Graphics could go multiple directions: more on-die GPU cores, an on-package GPU with more cores (Lifuka?) or the 8 on-die GPU cores from the M1 with an external AMD GPU. And we'll see at least 32GB of on-package memory and possibly 64GB. None of that, IMO, needs WWDC.

That they call this event "Spring Loaded" makes me believe it will be a 60-90 minute presentation with a number of product announcements.

There are already solutions for that on the market. Has been for ages.

Airtags is just another waste of resources.

If you had to help my wife find her keys three times a day, you’d care too. I’m almost more excited for Air Tags than iMacs at this point.
