Didn't the 16 inch Macbook get a 'press release' with it's trimmed bezels?

So the iMac might get a substantial release with slimmer bezels and no major redesign bar (superior cooling of the iMac Pro?)

That could be a press release with immediate availability.

That would be a bit sad, thought. But still pretty realistic.

A more ergonomic iMac would be greatly appreciated. Maybe Apple relies on the VESA mount for this ? :/

Sad. Yes. Because it's been 'soooooooooooooooo....' long we're expecting more from a design this time around but have been used to the current design dragging along.

See the lovely 'lamp' iMac concepts posted earlier in this thread.

I always thought that would be the true start of an ergonomic iMac/Mac that would 'bend' to our will. The only thing it couldn't do was rotate to vertical (which, funnily enough...the XDR can(!) do.)

So?

Pray for an XDR based design that can rotate to vertical. Good for art. Good for programming.

I felt the took an ergonomic step backwards with the current iMac tilt. (That and the blue cog that busts after so many adjustments...that's alot of heavy alu' on a plastic cog...)

Yeah. The Vesa reliance. I'd like a bit more ergonomic out the box.

See Surface 2 desktop from M$ (the did a great job on that) or the Apple XDR (which is very deductive and gives us hope.) Two designs that have completely eclipsed the 'long in tooth' iMac. The kind of designs we'd 'expect' to see on the iMac. Even seeing the 'dark gray' on the iMac Pro and Mac Mini gave me the green eyed monster.

The current iMac design isn't as challenging as the Bondi or Lamp iMacs or as exciting. Which is probably indicative of where Apple currently is. *Draw conclusions.

At the least:

a paint job of space grey and...
the 16 inch Macbook Pro 'slender bezel' treatment would really smarten up the current iMac.
That and a bigger screen in the footprint.
And the twin cooling mech' from the iMac Pro.

Why these? Three Apple Macs already have them and these changes are hardly revolutionary but just bringing the iMac 'up to date' with the design language already in the rest of the Mac range.

I don't thing those 'minimums' are difficult to do and would help as part of a 'substantial' tech' boost to the iMac range.

If I was running Apple (don't start me...I'd bring the Mac Pro down to £2500-£3500 with an i9 based motherboard option, put dGPU in the Mac Mini for £595-£999...and...)

The iMac would be XDR with specs dropped in. Priced from £1500-£3000.

Azrael.

Well, speaking of cleanliness, macbooks update very often and regularly. Literally, like hot cakes every year and their appearance and technical design changes a little, but much more often. In the case of iMac, this will still be a much more significant event...

But what's the point? Even if this happens, and UFO gets in touch with humanity Apple will make such an opportunity for an ordinary iMac, it will cost additional $ 999 :D

What's the point? Innovate or die. That's the point at which Steve came back to Apple.

'Sex sells.' Steve Jobs. And to prove it? Check out the sales figures for the Bondi and fruity iMacs.

Cleanliness next to Godliness. And if they want the iMac to sell like those sexy hot cakes they used to be? They have to put some 'sexy' design effort into it. Seems lazy and coasting at the moment. Timeless? Or lazy? Discuss.

As such, I suggest we pray to God for the XDR iMac.

Hey, if Apple can do a 6k 32 inch XDR iMac for £1700, £2200, £2700-£3k...? I'll get it. 'iMac Pro.' Now with 'Space Grey.' There is the 5k screen precedent when Dell were charging more with no computer. So Apple can do a supply chain trick to bring it to the mortals from the Gods. That unique 5k special feature is long ripe for improving. Decent though it is. It's no longer so 'wow.'

Fairy cakes. They're fine by me.

But for the iMac? I'm expecting....NAY(!) by the GODS, I DEMAND a design change to AWE, to SHOCK TO MAKE US WONDER!

Or if a UFO replaces COOK with a product guy.

The 'new' 24 inch iMac is going to be the ordinary 'iMac' for the 'rest of us.' So the '27' incher needs to become the iMac Pro for us demanding substantial specs and uber sexy design.

IIRC the 16 inch press release wasn't 5 weeks before a major Apple conference.

That would be cool. I'm a 100% landscape guy, but I think the XDR looks nice.

Indeed. In fact, as painful as the waiting is, there is probably direct correlation between the proximity to WWDC and the magnitude of the redesign, as others have said. The only intel piece that doesn't seem to fit the puzzle is the current shipping delays that may indicate a more immediate and incremental release.

I can be as much of a baby as anyone - I hate waiting. But if the wait means it's a significant redesign, 6 months from now I'll be happy with that outcome and the wait will be a detail of history.

From what I can see Prosser is an attention diva and kind of a wanker. He appears to be as wrong as often as right.

Multiply you cost for 6k XDR iMac with two and you are on the right track. They cannot add an iMac to the XDR screen unless the screen specs are lowered due to cooling issues. An "ordinary" 6k screen in a similar case might be fine with an iMac. I never thought I say this but 32 inch is too large for my desk.

As mentioned in the thread about the concept, it is actually thicker at the centre, it just doesn’t look it because the bulge is less aggressive because it starts further back. It also has 50% more volume inside, plus there is room for larger vents underneath. It is the current design that has too many thermal constraints. This should improve on it, but would it be enough?
Unless we see dimensions, it is impossible to judge. Making edges thicker will not necessarily give better flow over the processors shared cooler (or whatever that metal thing is called the dissipate heat). A larger cooler and highest possible flow velocity of air over said cooler is the key. I just cannot see how that correlates with larger total volume in general. Larger vents is a good idea to keep the noise down. The iMP can be cooled quite well using 140 W CPU and >200 W GPU (not sure here). Should be sufficient for a 125 W Comet lake and a 5700 card.

That said, the slab design and thin bezels seem be the way forward but who knows, Apple has surprised us a few times.

The refurb store is very tempting if the new iMacs don't come out before 4 pm (East us time) wednesday. I really want the 2020 iMac however the dell is literally falling apart and I don't know how much longer it has.

It is a good price however it exceeds my $2000 soft limit, $2400 is a hard limit that I cant exceed. A 5K iMac with AppleCare can be bought for around $2k, the 8GB of ram isn't a big deal at all as I can upgrade to 24GB for about $100 later by buying another 16gb and installing it myself.

As far as release timing goes, keep in mind the desktop Comet Lake chips this years iMacs are likely using are not officially released until around May 20th. I suspect that's why we've seen so many rumors about imminent release- Apple has them ready (in whatever form they take!) and they've been waiting on the official Intel date.

Of course that doesn't mean the iMacs will arrive precisely then, just that I wouldn't expect them before that date when desktop Comet Lake CPUs are officially available.

Is the hype train not stopping tomorrow then, and is pulling in to the station called, ‘Next Week’?

Well they could show the iMac this week and start selling it next week (May 20th is the next wednesday).

I sense an upcoming frustration on this topic. Even without thinness obsessed Ive, I see no hope while Tim Cook sits there.

Craiiiiiiiiig for CEO ?

With HairForce One, nothing can put down Apple.

Good point, but I thought they were released in the end of April. Perhaps launched but not released until 20 May? I gather next week will do as well.

Add me to the club of people ready to throw their money at a new iMac. Hopefully WWDC delivers.

Until then, I'll still rock my 2011 iMac. I have to say this thing has more than paid for itself. I got the base 27 inch configuration and the only work I ever did to it was adding 4 extra gigs of RAM (bringing the total to 8 lol). That being said, I'm ready to splurge.

Release the Kraken Tim!

Same here. I will buy a new 27" iMac if it has Navi GPU and new design. Switching from PC again, I have been away for couple of years because of dull Apple products.

Yeah, if the iMac is unavailable for deliver until end May due to the CPU, they could still put them on the home page so we can order them.
