I am hopeful about today as well. The news for the 13 inch MBP came out around 5:30 PDT, so I will start refreshing things in about 4 hours.

Wednesday has been a good day historically in terms of press releases.

About GPU, doesn't really matter for my work so I don't care really. As long as it's better than what's in my current iMac from 2015.

Do you think that the base gpu of 2020 model is better than the current 580X 8GB? I have an opportunity to buy the i5 3.7ghz 580X version for a good price right now, used near me.

Nobody knows. But, if we are talking about de 27-inch iMac, I expect, at least, two different GPU options: RX 5600 starting price and 5700 as upgrade. I'm not sure about the XT models, wich are betther than de non XT ones. If this is true, and answering your question: the supposed base RX 5600 is better than the current RX 580X.

The RDNA GPUs (AMD 5300, 5500, 5600, 5700) are better clock for clock, but the RDNA2 GPUs slated for the end of the year (or maybe early next year) are meant to be a big leap better.

We might not see those in a Mac until mid 2021 though and given how relaxed Apple are about putting GPUs in, with mini LED and Rocket Lake S, October 2021 might be the state of things for them. Or Apple could just do a Coffee Lake bump and we'll be looking at ARM iMacs next summer :)

We don't know what would constitute base GPU of 2020 yet. Things might stay exactly the same if they just do a storage or RAM bump. If you are assessing a used model you should do that against the price of an official refurb model (which will have an Apple warranty) rather than guess on whatever Apple might release.

For what it's worth, stock 27" iMac availability in the UK continues to drift into the future, with stock models now showing May 29-June 5 and BTO configuration looking like June 10-17 at the moment. This hasn't really changed in a couple of weeks and at current rate of travel it might be a month before we see refresh, a week or two before digital WWDC.

I don't know your opinion, but if I was Apple maybe I'll save the RDNA2 GPUs for the ¿mini-LED 8K? iMac Pro. So eventually they will fit de 5300 and 5500 in the 21-inch 4K model and the 5600 and 5700 in the 27-inch 5K model.

WWDC release is quite possible. I think we will see 2020 iMac sooner, because I don't feel we get a full redesign (only major spec bump), but that's only my opinion.

Guys, Wednesday happens every week. Exhale and calm down, there will be nothing today. Wait for WWDC.
maybe you're right.... and that could perfectly match with the "image of WWDC" who starts with "hello" like Liza2....

but, considering the long ETA for iMac 27"... do you think that Apple will loseONE ENTIRE selling month just expecting WWDC to introduce new iMAc...??? 1 month of 12 is tooo much....!!

I think they will release before WWDC, most likely next week. I agree with you because a lot of people are working from home and in this case an iMac is a better option that a MacBook, so they can sell it like gunpodwer. We already know that the release was expected on March, and I think there are some reasons that can explain that:
  • The release of Intel's new CPUs was delayed and Apple could not present a product with processors that, officialy, were not yet launched.
  • Apple is selling a lot of 2019 iMacs due to working from home situation and they are just waiting to clear some stock.
  • Due to the health global crisis, production chains have slowed and they could not guarantee a minimum stock.
These are only personal speculations.

I probably went overboard with the I-word there, sorry about that @Voyageur

That said, there is pages and pages of insightful and good reasoning about why the release would happen sooner rather than later.

I think everyone here realizes that it's perfectly possible that nothing will happen until WWDC. Still, outright claiming nothing will happen until then, without inside knowledge, is not rational.

I think these are some very good points, and a combination of them could be to explain for why we haven’t seen it announced yet. Hopefully we hear something today, but I could potentially hold my thoughts together until next week...

Yeah, I also think next week is our best target. We had to wait one month from MacBook Air, iMac Mini and iPad Pro to iPhone SE launch. And then, we waited three weeks for the MacBook Pro. So... I don't expect to see the iMac until next week as earliest.

Certainly I'd expect mini LED for the iMac Pro (but 5k 27") and they may as well wait a few extra months for the iMac Pro if they really wanted RDNA2 for it.

The GPU configurations are also a sound guess but with an iMac being ready since March as it stands I can't see it being much more than a RAM or storage bump this year. It would put the onus on the the 23" iMac - perhaps in October - to be the one to watch.

That could be very much dependent on how Mac sales are going too by the end of Q3

The more I think about it, the more I think Apple will release the updated iMac outside of WWDC. Even if its a redesign. They have scattered the iPhone SE, iPad Pro, MacBook Air and MacBook Pro over the last two months, I can see them updating the iMac outside of WWDC and having WWDC solely be about software, especially because it is a virtual conference this year and not a big huge media event. I just hope the iMac isn’t just a spec bump.

ok, so here we have three main hypotesis:

1) Apple will start the migration to ARM and will introduce it starting from iMac and will present it ad WWDC (talking about sw integration etc...) --> this hypotesis seems (in my hopinion) a bit strange because i suppose that apple would have introduce ARM starting from a "low power" Mac like Air .... (?)
2) we'll still have intel proc and Apple will introduce new iMac within next weeks:
  • a) simple spec bumps: in this case they should have introduce ASAP new iMac consdiering that in these weeks they are not selling new 27" iMac do to high ETA;
  • b) redesign with spec bump --> most of us prefer this hypotesis but maybe it goes against what Jon Prosser said because if they have already been ready for shipment for days, then they are already assembled, and if they are already assembled and ready for shipment then it is strange that there has been no leak with some photos of the new design; it is also strange that still on the internet nobody has seen any new test / benchmark of the new iMac as happened 15 days ago when they saw a new 13 "Macbook Pro tested with very high benchmarks.

in the end of all (IN MY PERSONAL OPINION) the most choerent case is the 2-a) .......

    sad but true....

Agree with 2a. For the ARM Mac I think they will choose Mac Mini to be the first. Mac Mini is the simplest / cheapest way to get macOS and it could be used as some kind of development box / environment for ARM processors. Maybe they will create something like Mac Mini dev edition that you be able to buy only as registered developer.

They could update the 21.5” iMac to a new design 23” iMac (same body, smaller bezels) and discontinue the 27” iMac and just have the 27” iMac Pro. This will differentiate the lineup a bit more.

That would be awesome ??. It’s a shame we can’t have a more affordable version of the amazing iMP with the superior cooling, louder speakers, T2 etc. and have to settle with the inferior 27” iMac but if they made the iMP the standard option that replaces the iMac then maybe there is a hope.

There's talk of AMD's RDNA2 consumer cards not actually shipping this year due to a combination of coronavirus delays and next generation Xbox and Playstation using up what production capacity there is - let's face it, it would be stupid of AMD to upset Microsoft and Sony by diverting any production to PC graphics cards. As I understand it, the 3000 series Nvidia cards are still due to be announced in August (not that there's any chance we see one as an option in a Mac).
