Yeah sounds about right, I mean look what they did to the iPad Pro in march, was that the biggest waste of time or what..what was the point of releasing an update if it was just a camera bump.

Because it wasn't "just a camera bump".

As Voyageur noted, Apple wanted a LIDAR sensor in an iOS device early so that developers could gain experience in working with it and developing applications that support it so they would be available immediately when the iPhone 12 Pro line ships with LIDAR in September.

Almost everyone. 99.9999% of people out there don't think too much about the design or the specs outside of how much storage and ram. We all complain about Apple's spec choices here, but for the vast majority of people, they simply don't care that much.

About a month ago, I was browsing online to get a good deal on a 2019 27" iMac because the one I have right now (Late 2015 27") and I bought from eBay in 2017, has developed a small issue on the screen so I wanted to sell as soon as possible before the value goes down more. I spent almost 2 weeks and then suddenly it hit me. I was that close to buying my third iMac in a period 9 years and it would look exactly the same as the other two. And there, I decided it is just not worth it, sure the 2019 has very good specs and value for money compared to what I had before but I just can't buy the same design for the third time and that is also why I'm even considering getting the iMP which I will probably only use 30% of its overall power as I don't do any heavy professional video or 3-D work, I'm just desperate to get something different even something as simple as a different color. Why are iPads, MacBooks and Mac mini offer the beautiful space grey option and the iMac doesn't? Like, why is it so hard to offer color options especially as the iMP shares the same case as the 27" iMac.

I also skipped iPhone XS and iPhone 11 because I didn't see any value to what they offer compared to the X that I own currently and they look almost the same. iPhone 12? I will be the first in line to get it because finally the design goes back to the iconic 4 series which is so much better than the generic rounded and slippery design of the 6-11.

So now, either I will be looking for a very good deal on a used iMP or wait for a potential redesign down the line.

The i9 iMac does pretty well in both performance and noise level so it is doable, just, although that is pushing the limits with the current iMac design.
Yes I am thinking of getting a maxed out i9 2019 iMac.......does anybody on this board have experiences with this machine that they would share.

i just picked up the refurb in my sig, upgraded from a 2012...was waiting for a redesign but couldn't anymore.

Basically its a great machine, just feels a bit outdated. The fan is fairly loud, but does not hinder performance. Video editing is smooth and encoding in handbrake is fast. Machine is very stable even on Catalina. Webcam sucks as expected. Screen is outrageous.

one good thing about lack of design change was the ability to upgrade the RAM myself.

Ah dammit, read through the last few pages. Was hoping for a redesign, I have a 2019 15" with 32GBs of ram that needs upgrading (previously had a 2018, logic board fried so Apple gave me a 2019 model instead).

Recently seeing the memory pressure in the orange, probably am going to need the 64GBs next time. However, some folks are saying the new redesign (whenever it is) will be a fully closed capsule, i.e. no upgrades, Apple charges a fortune for ram. Probably going to be in the same boat as many others and wait to see what unfolds over the next 18 months.

Needless to say the 5.0ghz iMac CPU is so tempting, I can literally see After Effects zipping through rendering with that beast powering it.

Well, the waiting around has made me do the opposite. After reassessing what I actually need, I think I'm going to hold on to my MacBook Pro for another year and invest in a stand to keep it in clamshell mode to give me back the desk space I need. I may still get an eGPU or console for gaming, but I really just want to play Minecraft Dungeons, which my Macbook should cope with, and by the time Diablo 4 is out we will be posting about the 2021 iMac redesign, so I'll worry about that then.
So unless Apple surprises with a really compelling redesign this year, I'm sitting this one out.

The 10900 has changed to "temporarily out of stock" from "released 28/5" at Amazon (UK). Cannot find that CPU anywhere else and no references to tests. If Apple will offer a 65W CPU after the refresh (and a 125W), we need to wait for this CPU.

What is the hiccup at Intel? A cleanroom is probably one of the better places to work in during COVID-19 outbreak so no excuse there. I gather there are some reagents that is missing. Just in time economy - very vulnerable. I hope we rethink society a little. Management requires "robust" workers. How about a robust economy system to match that demand? Sorry for getting political. Moving on...

Having a long delivery time on the Web may scare some people off ordering so there will not be too many "can a change my newly bought old iMac for the new one" customers. If there is an update, it would be much less frustrating if Apple updated the home page with the new or updated iMac and let people wait after ordering in case of short supply. The 2013 MP was released in Dec 2013, I ordered in January and got the machine in April. It was OK as I know when it would show up. Furthermore, it is a boring iMac we are talking about, not a fancy iPhone so why the secrecy?

If there is a delay of the iMac delivery due to COVID-19 issues with a component, say so on the home page - everyone would understand.

If it is one thing that Apple scores 0 out of 10 is on their communication strategy.

I spent almost 2 weeks and then suddenly it hit me. I was that close to buying my third iMac in a period 9 years

That amount of new machines sounds so crazy to me.

I am still running my iMac 2012 and the only reason i need to upgrade it is for Video work. I was looking into coding, so it would be sad Xcode would be gone with the next OS X Update (i think) - but that was more like a geek hobby and i still have my MacBookPro.
Added benefit to the new iMac will be that a new GPU should enable me to play Planet Zoo in a less than Playstation 2 look (but yes, that game runs perfectly fine on NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 512 MB with low settings). But i would not buy a new iMac at 4000€ for that obviously. I would not even buy a 800€ gaming pc for that.
For Lightroom and my new SonyA7M3 this iMac 2012 actually works out better than my MacBook Pro 2015. The Retina just kills performance in Lightroom i think.

Before that i had one other iMac... it took it with me when i moved out of my parents house. My dad still uses the iMac he got back than (2008) when i took the old one... so what i took must have been a 2006 or 2007 model and i used it till 2012 when i just needed some extra power for Uni Design projects.
So this iMac we are waiting for right now will be my third in 14 years and at 4000€ it better make it to at least six years. :D

My MacBook (2008, first Aluminum one, only one without the Pro i think) i replaced nearly 9 years after i bought it. Granted, installing a SSD prolonged the life of that one massively, still was able to get 1/3 of the buying price when i sold it.
I got the 2015 on sale back than because i was not happy with no MagSave and all the USB-C Ports on the redesigned Model. Super happy with that decision because having the ports actually came in very handy on multiple occasions.
But yeah, thats two MacBooks in 12 years and no intention in getting a new one any time soon.
(both 13 inch)

iPad is about the same, got the iPad 2 day one and replaced 2018 with the "consumer iPad". So thats 7 years. But in the end the iPad 2 would do pretty much nothing but play videos properly, just typing input on the keyboard would take seconds to finally show up on screen.

iPhone i am still running the original SE (only my second Smartphone, and fourth mobile Phone) and since i replaced the battery recently i don't feel a need to upgrade (even if it's probably falling of the Xcode Bandwaggon later this year sadly...)

Thats still a good amount of electronic wast for a lot of money. But still, three iMacs in 9 years just wow me.

Scan has the 10900K in stock and it's due in stock at Overclockers tomorrow, so it could just be Amazon running out of stock.

The retail channel for new Intel CPU's is always pretty short on supply whenever they have new chips. Nothing new here.

Also the retail channel for CPU's is not not really relevant to Apple.

I don´t see that at all. Theres the 13 inch rocking a 10th gen. If apple wants it, apple gets it. It's more of a question if apple already wanted it when it was preparing the iMac for March. I am hoping we at least see 10th gen as a BTO upsell.

You are probably right. If "low" = "nothing", the supply is low overall. I was more interested in "not released until 28/5" than actual stock. I hope Apple have good access to these.

It does not seem that Dell/alienware and HP have Comet lake computer on sale yet. If so, Apple will certainly not have it.

Sorry, I missunderstood. I think the 65w version is due to launch next week. There are some reports that it pulls in 224w under heavy load. If that's true, which we'll have to wait for the proper launch to confirm, then it doesn't sound that much of a benefit over the 125w version. Given the thermal issues of Comet Lake I'm starting to wonder if Apple have decided to skip the upgrade and will go straight to Tiger Lake. If that's the case then any upgrade would just be graphics and possibly switch to SSD. It would also tie in with rumours that the new iMac was ready in March before 10th generation i chips were announced.

Yeah I think if there's any update it will be a minor spec/feature bump. 1080 camera and SSDs and that's probably about it. Of course I'm hoping for a completely redesigned totally new and improved iMac but there's a snowballs chance in hell of it actually occurring I'm afraid..

Although a small upgrade would technically be enough for me, I’d like SSD and 16gb RAM as standard on a new one.

I’m not too bothered about the bezels or chin, but admittedly, the thought of a new design just around the corner is exciting. And I’d be gutted if I bought a new one now and they replaced it with something like the XDR design.

What to do...

It's likely a matter of weeks away, unless utterly desperate I'd wait.
I'm macless and holding on.

I think we are many in this situation. Wait for WWDC and then decide. Base iMac Pro plus 2TB SSD looks attractive all of a sudden.

oh yeah, I agree with you, three computers in 9 years is nuts, but as I said the iMac I currently own and I bought used from eBay when I moved to the US, has developed the dreaded screen blemish on the left bottom corner, so I don’t want to keep it anymore and live with it, I’d like to sell it as soon as possible as it still has some value. My first iMac I bought while living overseas also had this issue and no, I do not smoke (as the rude and clearly uninterested on my issue the Apple rep in Europe implied on the phone) and I do not purposely fill up my room with toxic fumes and dust, it is plain bad design from Apple and I got the short end of the stick twice.

Now, when I buy my 3rd iMac I will pay extra for Apple care becauseof the way these machines are designed and they attract dust inside the screen or whatever other reason.

Lidar-dah, Lah-di-dar.

It was a very poor update in terms of CPU and GPU power. One of the meh-rist iPad updates ever. At least the iPad 3 had the retina screen.

Some of the updated stuff was 'nice to haves.'

But where's the meat and potatoes?

Azrael.
