Will you leave the Apple ecosystem because of CSAM?

Today it’s data set A that gets scanned tomorrow Apple may decide to now scan other documents locally. But sure I always let strangers in my house if they promise to only scan multiple photos. Nothing could potentially go wrong in Apple land.
You can speculate and theorize all day, it doesn't change anything.

You do realize that Apple writes the software right? They've had years to do whatever the hell they want on our devices and they've had years for governments to force them into doing whatever they want and they haven't. Based on their track record, I have no reason to believe they won't keep up the fight.

Privacy like any human right is applicable universally and not just to people we deem good. The fact that Apple circumvents real privacy for this tells us there is no fight.

Privacy to Apple is a marketing term and seeing it through properly isn’t even on their roadmap. There is no fight that Apple is partaking other than increasing shareholder value.

In your opinion

I ask you... would you rather for Apple not fight against Child Abuse when they have the technology to do so? I'm curious.. what alternative method do you think Apple should do?

Apple is not fighting against child abuse. They are only trying to not get caught with child porn images on their servers which they have a mandate to do so I believe.

AND THIS IS WHY FOLKS.

58% are okay with it. There is always a silent majority, and a massively vocal miniscule minority that works in today's outrage culture.

I've had arguments with people over on reddit, only to tell them "I"ll see you back here in a few months" as they start looking at their finances and realizing that it's more optimal to stay in the Apple ecoysstem than dish out $10k for a cause they don't give much of a **** about.

It's easy to type on keyboard what you'll do.

Well, yeah… I get the mandate part. But the other side of CSAM argument.. is the on device scanning. Particularly the issue with alerting parents of messages sent to their child.

I don’t need Apple or any IT company do what law enforcement should be doing.

But if Apple runs a big mouth about privacy- conveniently as usual leaving out any statements about the privacy of your data in the iCloud already - then put money where your mouth is and deliver privacy, not a half done job to sell more devices with more marketing bubbles.

I really hate to be a downer but ... it's probably more like 95% are ok with it at least. Macrumors is an extreme minority. (1.65 billion iPhone users (https://www.theverge.com/2021/1/27/22253162/iphone-users-total-number-billion-apple-tim-cook-q1-2021)) - vast majority will not give a crap. A lot of them use Facebook...

Agreed, it's easier to speak/type than do.

Edit: Fixed carp* :p

I totally understand your point. But as I said… what alternative method should they do? Nothing. Let those kind of pictures be loaded on their servers encrypted and privacy protected.

I agree that nobody likes pedophiles but how is this anybody’s job but that of law enforcement?

Most of us have data that we’d like to share only with a few. We either have privacy or the Orwellian route where you’re only left alone if your possessions have been scanned and deemed ok by the current IT firm in question.

I also don’t show my family pictures to a bypassing police car each time they pass my house.

There’s good intent and there’s overreach - hand in hand. As long as we have the latter, it’s a failure at some level.

The important follow-up question to those who say "yes" would be: "And which ecosystem do you plan to join that you believe will offer you better privacy and security than Apple?"

The options in this poll lacks one that says "will not leave iCloud but is not fine with CSAM scan." I suspect that might be one of the highest percentage, if not the highest one. Bad poll.

An option fo the folk who aren't happy about it but won't do anything? Not sure that tells us much.

It will tell us the percentage of people "who aren't happy about it but won't do anything". It might be the most important option to make all the other answers accurate.

I don't like the tax rate but I pay it. In a poll where either I have to like the tax or leave the country or commit fraud, I would not be able to answer, or I would have a give a false answer, probably lie and say that I like the tax. Unless a poll cover all options, the answers you receive will not be accurate.

There are a lot of newbies posting on this thread - some of whom say they are staying but most who say they are leaving. 🤨
My status is "newbie," but I've been using Apple products for over four years and I created my MacRumors account three years ago.

Had Apple not pulled this stunt I would have been on here again, soon, asking about Mac computers. Now there'll no longer be a need.

Let me propose this situation…. Say you have some type of power or gift, perhaps.. you are Superman, Spider-Man or The Flash. I know this seems kind of odd to say. But would you stand idle by and not help those who are not as gifted as you?

I hate to be cliche… but with power comes responsibility. Apple has the technology to help those who have the potential to experience abuse. I totally understand your perspective about how Apple has been vocal about privacy and it’s as if they switched their stance.

But I think Apple is in a tough position. Either they stand idle or they do something.

Self hosted NAS--remove the cloud entirely. Start there. Then Windows and Privacy Focused Android OS. Not that hard.

Today its CSAM tomorrow its your IoT cameras and HomePod microphones. It always starts this way.
After being an Apple evangelist I can no longer recommend them with a clear conscience. The only thing that was going on for them is trust especially that they are closed source software.

Now that they are actually telling you we are scanning your photos, and already caught sharing and listening to Siri audio recordings, there is no more trust. No one knows what they are actually doing behind the scenes in MacOS and iOS , my Apple devices are already one of the most ones calling back home.

I am already planning my migration options and after being an Apple evangelist for couple of decades, Its time to start advocating for FOSS.

Power+Money = Corruption

Well, they could scan the pictures when they arrive on the servers … which is what they've been doing anyway.

Google, Microsoft and Facebook also scan the images when they arrive on the server.

The problem is that Apple is building a system to scan files that will be loaded on to every single iPhone using iOS15 and above, whether the owner is using iCloud Photos or not.

The reason folk are calling it a back door is because that's what it is. When Apple first announced it, they admitted that it was possible that it could be abused. A few days later, they said they would resist any attempts to subvert it.

Given how quickly they cave in to China's requests, I don't find that very reassuring to be honest.
