What latest update? That trick 'labconfig' registry hack still works. I used it to make an old 2013 Acer Aspire M ultrabook with 2GB RAM run it. That was literally a month ago! Granted it kills the battery in 20 minutes but runs it well IMO.

I can do an in-place update of the 'unsupported' eMachines as well. Microsoft is the very company who made those registry edits public!

Microsoft does not let people cheat and install 11 with unsupported hardware in latest update

Have you tried using Hasleo's WinToUSB or WinToHDD? Yes, you need to boot from another version of Windows 10 or 11, but I have not had any problems with it. And the installed version seems to update with no problems.

I will not waste time trying these, will just wait until Windows 10 out of support soon.

Why wait until it's too late vs. learning/adjusting to Windows 11 now?
Because an awful lot of people will be continuing on W10.

I have two Windows machines. One can update toW11, the other can't. I dislike switching between two versions, so will remain on W10 indefinitely.

(It is curious how much easier it can be switching between macOS and Windows than between two versions of Windows. Assuming you are familiar with all of them.)

Switching between all three isn't that big of an issue. It mostly is obvious when you are trying to change settings between the three but day to day "use" is mostly similar. Of course this is all IMO, YMMV!

I spent many years jumping between all available versions of Windows - personal and server.

I can cope with doing so. But I do dislike it. And can see little benefit to my updating one of my two Windows machines, which would cause this difference, rather than simply leaving it on W10.

That is fair. MS historically has had a hard time getting folks to switch to newer versions of Windows. It is probable most people only get the newer version when they buy a new computer (since most people get pre-built systems).

Since having to return my 14 inch MacBook Pro to my former employer I brought out the old dusty XPS 15 9570, bought and replaced a faulty fan on Amazon, and been using Windows 11 with it.

It's a pretty phenomenal OS. Really enjoy aspects the UI and how it runs without me installing any applications. Edge is THE best browser still. Love it!

But... this is a huge but. I'm not going to install any other software because my experience with Windows is the more applications I install, the worse it runs.

I keep my XPS lean and mean for this reason. Historically, I’ve had the same issue with Windows.

I personally prefer Win11 over 10. 10 couldn't tell if it was Windows 8 or Windows 10. The start menu was a cluttered mess of live tiles and disorganized UI compared with the much cleaner Win11 menu that just has your apps.

My parents also prefer 11 over 10. It boots up faster, too.

I got 10 running and it's a lesson in frustration to use compared with 11. For example, it keeps closing down my email app because 'memory is running low' but it leaves Edge and Firefox open which consume far more resources. I have no way to stop that behavior. Windows 10 was the 'idiot proof' Windows. No thanks. I hate an OS treating me like a stupid person.

Windows 10 has 3 years of life left. Either you get used to 11 now or you'll be forced to use it all of a sudden come October 2025. I remember when I was suddenly introduced to iOS 7 in September of 2013 and had no way out. I wouldn't wish that horror on anyone!

want to switch to gaming app with a swipe of a finger.

Microsoft needs to find another TV advertising agency very soon.

Yesterday Windows 11 decided to say: screw you and your desktop setup

- it forgot all my display settings, scaling, switched the main and external screen
- all open windows changed positions and were moved to totally random places
- the taskbar forgot all its settings, didn’t hide anymore, configuration got reset
- my virtual desktops disappeared
- I also had a non moveable window thing with a blurred background on my screen

I had to restart and reconfigure everything

I’m sure it was my fault. What did I think when I stepped away from my PC for 30 minutes to eat something.

I hate this system

Did you check the event log to see if DWM crashed (or logged a crash)?

no, work, phone calls, too much to do. I was busy enough getting it up and running again.

Now I can't find anything special that's and error or something. So I have no idea.

Dang. It really sounds like DWM ate itself. Shame it didn’t log anything.

I somewhat got used to all the bugs and glitches of Windows 11.

- the automatically hiding taskbar that won't go back down even though you click ALL open programs
- the UI scaling I have to set back and forth EVERY TIME the monitor turns off
- the search that is slow as hell and can't even find internal Windows applications reliably
- in general anything that involves external screens you unplug every now and then as you use a laptop

but having to fix this stupid thing all the time because it shot itself in the back "for fun" gets old really fast and I can't wait to get back to a MacBook Pro later this year.
I'm also incredibly disappointed how slow WSL 2 is progressing. It's basically the same thing I used two years ago with some very minor tweaks and lots of open problems. Such a shame as the general idea is brilliant and works even better than MacOS sometimes :/

Odd since Windows 11 has been flawless for me even on the 'unsupported' hardware. It never decides during a game to up and restart to update itself, or entirely bug out and get stuck in an auto-repair boot loop, or decide that my Mail app has to close down whenever it feels like it.

All of that happened quite often with Windows 10, and on the one system I have still running it, still happens. Today, I fired up the email app again (it closed soon as I woke the PC up) and what do you know? Windows has to shut down to update AGAIN! One hour later I was too aggravated to even bother with my email. This is progress?

Edge seems fine for the 'new tab' page. That's what comes up when I click on 'home' up on the toolbar. It's got a nice nature background, the weather, and my recently accessed sites. IIRC 'top sites' was removed from macOS a long time ago. I love having it back. It has a little news bar below with subject headers but no news pops up. It'd be nice to get rid of the 'coronavirus' tab since I'm done worrying about the apocalypse, but at least it's not showing propaganda like it used to on Windows 10 back when Edge had the IE icon.

It takes setting up though, and extra steps to configure, but it's doable. If this were Apple, you'd be stuck with it.

The Windows 10 PC is a 2008 eMachines that once ran Vista. I planned on forcing Windows 11 on it later but even 10 was a test of 'unsupported hardware' running a newer OS it was never designed to. Much like how I got my Note II to work on VoLTE via similar hacks. I prefer keeping what I have and boycotting the consumerist lifestyle.

But Windows 10 also exists at work. And boy howdy ain't nothing more annoying than losing all your 10 or so browser tabs keeping track of various work-related stuff because Windows decided it had to restart to update itself.

Windows 11 I have installed on my MBP, an older Acer laptop, and my last new purchase being a Lenovo IdeaPad 3 laptop. They all work fine, never interrupt my work, don't even annoy me with update pop-ups or icons, and if they update, they wait until I decide to shut them down or restart them. Windows 11 was running non-stop on the Lenovo and I only restarted it once since I bought it in February because it refused to take my correct PIN or Fingerprint and required a restart to try again. That restart made it do some updates that took no longer than 4 minutes and I was back. No longer do I have my game up an exit or any browser windows close down and lose my place at work due some 'mandatory update'. If Win11 updates, it waits for me to initiate it myself. I am unsure if 'seamless updates' are a thing on Windows but it seems to do a good 90% of them without requiring a restart.

Windows 10 used to crash the desktop in an interesting way that resets all the preferences. But I haven't yet experienced that still-unfixed bug in Windows 11...yet. Updates on Windows 10 are the worst. I've had games up and exit because the system was shutting down to install some 'mandatory' update that apparently couldn't wait. There was a rage video from Markiplier where Windows 10 trolled him during a difficult game by deciding to update in that moment. His reaction mirrors mine.

I don't even get notified about updates on Windows 11. I had to shutdown my laptop once because it refused to accept my correct Hello PIN and it said 'you must restart to try again' so I only got the 'updates are underway' thing on restart. I like how 11 is patient about it.
