Microsoft confirms Windows 11 security update install issues

Interesting, because I would have thought that MS would ensure the EFI partition would be a set size for all machines, but perhaps older machines used smaller partitions. I know that for linux, if you're using the limine boot manager, it requires 4gb, where as systemd-boot 2gb and grub 500mb
I'm pretty sure the EFI partition is a set size (512mb). In the past I've seen backup programs that take snapshots of all the volme, not release the space on that volume properly (causing it to run out of space). I'd be curious to see/know what is on the volume for the folks where it is full.

So I just read it's an issue for windows devices with 10mb of space remaining or less. So this issue is affecting .0000000001 percent of window users.

Man, the sensationalism of the tech media these days. Brutal. I have said this many times before. 99 percent of windows issues are affecting a miniscule amount of users, and the tech media makes it sound like 90% of users are having these issues.

Then the general population eats it up.

That's a made up number and marginalizing the problem doesn't help anyone

There's an estimated 1,000,000,000+ desktops running windows (source), and .0000000001 would equate to 0

Why do you keep trying to minimizing the problems MS keeps having rolling out their updates?

It seems every month in 2026 and possibly before they've had issues, which they themselves have admitted. I'm posting actual published reports, and in most cases, those reports include the KB article number. Its true that some of these problems impact a smaller pool of users, but that pool isn't zero so its not helpful to sweep these problems under the rug stating its not impacting many people.

If it impacts 10%, we're a hundred million users, 5% is half of that and even 1% is 10 million users - I don't think 10 million users is minuscule.

That's not entirely true. It's 10 MB on their EFI partition. Not the main partition. EFI partitions can be insanely small. Like 200 MB small. So this affects more people than you would think.

Because I have not seen wide spread issues of any windows system I have been around. Again, it's mostly fanboyism and tech influencer clickbait. Yes, of course there are issues. Apple has theirs, linux has theirs. NO different. Microsoft gets a unfair shake in the media imo.

To be fair, they kind of did it to themselves laying off tons of developers and replacing them with AI--with predictable results. Now they are backtracking and we will see what project K2 is like. I am hopeful, but it may take a while to get the ship turned around.

Oh I agree, but as I said, Most issues are sensationalism from the media. Apple have their issues with updates etc just as much but they dont get nailed to the cross every time.

I figure they all deserve it. With the ensh**ification of everything going on, I do not cape up for any corporation these days. They all have to earn it all the time with me. It's why I am now as cross-platform as possible.

So if Apple flubs an update then let em have it. If Microsoft, which continues to flub update after update (let's not forget they literally fired their entire QA staff like a decade ago and switched to having telemetry on the insider versions) then they also deserve what they get.

Even Linux having security issues lately deserves what it gets.

I completely agree with all. They all deserve it. I am back on my linux machine since my windows laptop is dying and it won't start this morning. I had to put the ipad down. I hate typing on it.

Jayz' YT came across my feed this morning, and its interesting for those running windows 11 and want to remove all references to Copilot

As the YT shows it does appear to be reverseable. I don't recommend how Jay runs its, i.e., blindly and not reviewing the code itself. I'd download the actual script and review it. Use at your own risk, running these sort of scripts (especially blindly as Jay has done) has a measure of risk. This can impact windows update, which Jay mentions, and that you will need to undo this before running update

You can just turn it all off and save time and headaches. No messing with reg edits etc. I use co-pilot for somethings, I only have the app active when I use it. It's turned off in 365, edge, etc. No sign of it other than the actual app.

I have started using Leo Ai built into brave on my linux machine

Its not fully disabling copilot, so this script fully rips out AI from windows.

Its like turning off telemetry, you can turn off some stuff but overall there's so much telemetry being send behind the scenes

An older video, but it shows how much communication occurs between windows 11 and the mothership

So, while you can disable portions of copilot in windows 11, its only surface level

NextDNS has settings to block Windows telemetry as well, so that on top of OO Shutup10, Chris Titus' Windows Utility and whatever else you want to use blocks most of it. Not sure about ALL, but I think there's so many backdoors in Windows it doesn't matter how tight you lock the front door.

so that on top of OO Shutup10, Chris Titus' Windows Utility
Oh no question, I've recommended both at times, though I will say that Chris Titus' utility has become fairly bloated over the years. Also, I had to reinstall windows because of his debloating and windows update. While its a technical marvel, its something that I avoid at this point

As for O&O shutup, I've had good luck with that, and while I usually take the more conservative settings, its been problem free.

I only turn off things like Bing Search in the Start menu and the setting to switch some pointless services to manual with Titus. Other than that I don't touch anything. And yes, I agree, it's become a mess as of late.

I am over it all. I don't really care if MS takes some of my data. I do nothing besides surf the net and edit videos and photos. The wife and I will partake in some content every now and then...don't care at this point. They all do it. Linux is different because it's not a money making system.

But as for Mac/Android/windows. They all do the exact same thing.

It is annoying, but adding a PIN requirement for bitlocker mitigates the exploit (which we have on all DoD systems, I actually think we break WinRE with some of our STIG settings)
Yeah, but I was surprised to see what looks like a very simple exploit and one that seems to have already gone beyond a proof in concept.

Edit: with MS forcing passkeys, its not something I'm wanting to use. I mentioned in this thread or another when I was having problems with my laptop that was on windows 11, it required a passkey to log into windows 11, but I had no passkey and personally, I'm not a fan. I'd rather use passwords. I don't want a company telling me how to log into my own computer, or in that scenerio, not letting me log into my computer with my password but forceing my to use a non-existent passkey.

That is interesting. I haven’t been required to use anything but a password or pin. Is it a Pro version thing?
