The kernel panics have happened quite a lot. M1 Macs dont seem to be as amazing as people say they are on this forum.
Did you ever look into the report/console logs to see why that happened?
For the protocol: no problems with that on any M1 machine in the faculty where I work.

There are many Windows based pc getting basically the same as the M1 in battery life.
But that go against the zealots misconceptions! Burn the witch! :)

My goodness. How dare someone actually like Apple. Omg, the horror. How can this be? Anyone intelligent wouldn't even think the thought! <screams>.

Speaking of zealots... I'm starting to think some of you should look in the mirror.

Totally ok to bash Apple tho :). Macrumors is becoming the site of the Anti-Apple zealot these days.

Yeah.....this entire discussion is getting a bit over the top. Amazed people can get so worked up about what computers other people buy.

Dell Latitude 9510 ?
Asus ExpertBook B9450F? There are many machines that have better battery lives than M1 MacBooks and as I just mentioned: The performance on M1 MacBook isn't perfect.
Well. The Dell is a 15 inch, FHD. Not exactly a comparable machine all things considered. While it may match the Macbooks battery life (nowhere near the claimed 35 hrs though) it falls short pretty much everywhere else.

The Verge tested mentioned Asus, achieving just shy of 11 hrs. Not even close to what the M MBP actually delivers.

A I said: some may match the M1s performance. Some (very very very few) may match its battery life. But no machine comes even close to matching both

I disagree look at this video by Linus. Before you say it's an "Apple Centric channel", Linus Tech Tips does not lick Apple's ass.

The MacBook Pro M1 got 22 hrs in the video playback test. Video starts at battery test.
Honestly the MacBooks should win the list. All the laptops above it lack Retina display and they only last a few minutes longer.

Top laptops of this year.
Now as for that list.

The number 1 is

Dell Latitude 9510

18:17

SPECIFICATIONS

Display: 15-inch, 1920 x 1080
CPU: Up to Intel Core i7-10810U vPro CPU
Weight: 3.7 pounds
battery size: 86.3mah

The link below shows the Dell Latitude having a 86.3mah battery and it has a 1080p display. So no wonder the
Dell Latitude is first.

source:

The number 2 is

2. Dell Latitude 9410 2-in-1

16:54

SPECIFICATIONS

Display: 14-inch, 1920 x 1080
CPU: Up to Intel Core i7-10610U vPro CPU
Weight: 3 pounds
battery size: 78mah

This 14" latitude has a 78mah battery and it too has a 1080p display. The link below shows the battery size source.

source for battery size:

The number 3 is

3. Asus ExpertBook B9450

16:42

SPECIFICATIONS

Display: 14-inch, 1920 x 1080
CPU: Up to Intel Core i7-10510U CPU
Weight: 2.2 pounds
battery: 66mah

This is also a 1080p laptop and has a 66mah battery.
source for battery size: https://www.zdnet.com/product/asus-expertbook-b9450/

The number 4 is

4. Apple MacBook Pro (13-inch, M1, 2020)

16:32

SPECIFICATIONS

Display: 13.3-inch, 2560-by-1600p
CPU: Apple M1 CPU
Weight: 3 pounds
battery size: 58mah

The MBP M1 laptop has a 2560-by-1600p display and not a measly 1080p and has the smallest battery size 58mah compared to the laptops mentions above.

What if the M1 MBP had a 1080p and a 78mah battery? it would have MUCH higher battery life compared to the laptops above.

source for battery size: https://www.apple.com/macbook-pro-13/specs/

Ahhhh the ole move the goal posts defence.
Nope all I am stating are facts. The laptops in list that are top 3 have 1080p displays and have a MUCH bigger battery capacity than M1 MBP 13" which has a 2560-by-1600p display and a 58mah battery.

If the 16" MBP had the M1 and with it's 99mah battery it would easily have the best battery life of any laptop even with a 3072‑by‑1920 display.

The M1 is built on TSMC's 5nm node currently that is most efficient node available. After that it is the AMD 5000 series and AMD CPUs are built on the 7nm node.

Also keep in mind macOS Big Sur does not have low power mode. Later this year macOS 12 will be getting low power mode and that will also increase the M1 MBP battery life

I don't use airdrop. Macs dont really have better battery lives. Pretty much the same. If you email a file or a picture to yourself then it's up to you. There's Your Phone app on Windows 10 etc…
I see. I don’t use the Your Phone app. It’s biased towards Android devices, which I would never use. And as in battery life Macs have better battery life on zoom. I have a pc and it can only last 2 hours on zoom, whereas the Mac lasted for more than 4 hours.

but if you think PCs are better, then that’s good! Both are good IMO.

The title of this thread is a true statement... perhaps for you.

Why fight it?

You need convincing? Evangelizing? Someone to change your mind? Perhaps you actually wanted help with your Mac and were venting your frustration with the title?

Be with the one you love, mate.

I think you have a problem with units there. A typical AA cell has a capacity of around 2000 mAh, so 86.3 is unbelievable. Watt-hour?

Oh, if people like Apple that is fine. The people spewing crap are the ones I laugh at. "the M1 has WAAAAAAYYYY better battery life than ANY windows based system". are the ones I love. NO, they don't. Then they post up things showing that there are plenty of windows based systems that get great battery life, even more than their wonderful Mjesus systems, then move the goal posts, well if they had this or that, they would not get such good results. Thats not what was being argued. The argument was battery life. Nothing was mentioned about screens, battery size blah blah blah.

Apple lovers, love to move goal posts. I guess it is just in their nature.

And I guess hating on everybody who even remotely say something good about Apple is in your nature. Got it, mate.
I don't hate on everyone that says anything good about apple. That's hilarious. As I said, if you like apple great. DOn't fanboyout and claim something, be proven wrong then move goal posts. that's what's funny.

If I can say one thing for sure after switching to Windows last year for work (after using Macs for a decade or so):

The grass seems to be greener on the other side until you stand on it.

Can't wait to be back to MacOS, I just hate Windows. I don't like every aspect of MacOS either, that's for sure, but Windows just isn't my thing, at all.

It's funny hey? I felt the same way moving from windows to macOS. MacOS does so many things bass ackwards to what it should be.

I totally understand that and I know a lot of people who don't have a problem using Windows but would hate Macs. But thinking a different system that looks great from distance will solve all your problems is a guarantee for disappointment.

Like people who keep buying more and more expensive camera gear and change systems all the time, but still take the same photos lol.

OMG, Don't start on camera gear. I went from Fuji, to Sony, to Olympus back to fuji again. The switch to Sony was because my friend moved to it as well, and we swapped lenses etc. I just LOVE my Fuji cameras and will never buy anything else. I have the X-S1, and the X10 and I am making a decent living from them now! I don't need a bag full of lenses lugging around with us.

I take the X-S1 in a backpack with a few accessories if we are in the backcountry, and if we are in the city, I take the X10 which is awesome for city/street photography!

I tried Mac 3 times before stopping the rotation of gear. One thing I did like was the 27 inch cinema monitor. That was an awesome screen. I now use 2 24 inch dell ultra sharps. One is touch enabled, the other is not. It's a great setup for editing and creating.

Yes, but at the same performance?

I looked over this article and tried to pick the best processors and the latest Intel seems the closest and even then, the M1 in the multicore test is almost 2x faster

Most of the other laptops that offer similar processing power fair a lot worse.

What apple did with the M1 is provide the consumer with incredible battery life AND excellent processing power. I prefer PCs but I give credit where credit is due, and Apple has out engineered Intel, Dell, HP and others who have similar class processors and laptops.

Very good performance. It's the third time my MacBook Air crashes today and restarts itself. Very good :) Yes, Apple has done amazing job. Very, very good performance.

To be fair, I don't remember the last time I got a blue screen of death on a PC. I'm seriously starting to wonder why I even purchased a Mac and why do I have such 'different' experiences to everyone else? Everybody's saying how Windows PCs crash all the time, but I haven't had a single crash on my Windows PC in years, MacBook Air M1 however…
I was in the middle of replying to you when my MacBook froze up and restarted itself. Is that a good performance laptop? Not for me.

Have you gone through Apple support?

I could have written similarly about a Microsoft Surface - but it made far more sense for me to contact their support and get a replacement.

There are no Apple Stores here, so I doubt I'd get a replacement. I've never been to a real Apple store and never had an honour to get my laptop replaced.

I love my Fuji gear, too. X-T3 with the primes is really a great setup.
Every now and then I miss my old full frame canon though.

There is no Apple Store within sensible travelling distance for me (two and a half hours, each way, on a good day). But I would check the Apple support suggestions as to how to handle issues.

With my Surface, I didn't have to visit a Microsoft store (do they still have any? I can't remember where they got to in opening and closing retail sites). I used online contact and sent a video of the issue and some diagnostics. They sent me a container which I put the Surface into. A few days later, got a replacement. I imagine Apple is similar (within warranty or under Apple Care).

If you're incurring kernel panics that much, then that's not normal, and you most likely have a defective unit. Basically you're condemning an entire product line because your single unit is incurring problems (most likely due to a defect).

I would contact apple and get it fixed/replaced
