Big Sur is like the old Windows NT. Instead of BSoD you now have Magenta Screen of Death, can't really connect external devices without glitches and every time it flakes out your only recourse is clean reinstall since there's currently no reset. In comparison, Windows 10 is stable almost like Linux.
The hell are you talking about? I have no less than 4 drives connected via usb to my work iMac (late 2020) and it’s been perfectly stable on Big Sur.

and the kps that it had (adobe related) didn’t require a clean reinstall of anything.

VS Code is great even though it runs on electron lol. Awesome what MS gives away for free there, it’s especially great if you are using Typescript

I'm referring to M1 devices plus not everyone has low standards.

The first M1 Macs were delivered what, about 6 months ago? This is the early adopter phase. If you didn't know that, I'm sorry to inform you that early adopters suffer through this phase with pretty much all products. Certainly high tech products. I'm done being an early adopter, and will happily wait for the M1 to mature while early adopters beta test for me.

I don't use airdrop. Macs dont really have better battery lives. Pretty much the same. If you email a file or a picture to yourself then it's up to you. There's Your Phone app on Windows 10 etc…
Really? I have first hand experience with macs being longer than Windows PC. M1 made this fact more impressive.

I missed that, my advice has always been to get the right tool for the job, and I think windows is a better tool when wanting to run visual studio, just my uneducated $.02
This 1000000%. As a software developer with 15 years experience, I am sorry to say that Visual Studio on the Mac is a complete joke. This is my workflow - in your words "right tool for the job"

Windows PC - Visual Studio/Development and Gaming
Macs - Everything else from Affinity/Adobe/Final Cut/Logic and more.

I disagree look at this video by Linus. Before you say it's an "Apple Centric channel", Linus Tech Tips does not lick Apple's ass.

The MacBook Pro M1 got 22 hrs in the video playback test. Video starts at battery test.

Now as for that list.

The number 1 is

Dell Latitude 9510

18:17

SPECIFICATIONS

Display: 15-inch, 1920 x 1080
CPU: Up to Intel Core i7-10810U vPro CPU
Weight: 3.7 pounds
battery size: 86.3mah

The link below shows the Dell Latitude having a 86.3mah battery and it has a 1080p display. So no wonder the
Dell Latitude is first.

source:

The number 2 is

2. Dell Latitude 9410 2-in-1

16:54

SPECIFICATIONS

Display: 14-inch, 1920 x 1080
CPU: Up to Intel Core i7-10610U vPro CPU
Weight: 3 pounds
battery size: 78mah

This 14" latitude has a 78mah battery and it too has a 1080p display. The link below shows the battery size source.

source for battery size:

The number 3 is

3. Asus ExpertBook B9450

16:42

SPECIFICATIONS

Display: 14-inch, 1920 x 1080
CPU: Up to Intel Core i7-10510U CPU
Weight: 2.2 pounds
battery: 66mah

This is also a 1080p laptop and has a 66mah battery.
source for battery size: https://www.zdnet.com/product/asus-expertbook-b9450/

The number 4 is

4. Apple MacBook Pro (13-inch, M1, 2020)

16:32

SPECIFICATIONS

Display: 13.3-inch, 2560-by-1600p
CPU: Apple M1 CPU
Weight: 3 pounds
battery size: 58mah

The MBP M1 laptop has a 2560-by-1600p display and not a measly 1080p and has the smallest battery size 58mah compared to the laptops mentions above.

What if the M1 MBP had a 1080p and a 78mah battery? it would have MUCH higher battery life compared to the laptops above.

source for battery size: https://www.apple.com/macbook-pro-13/specs/

Nope all I am stating are facts. The laptops in list that are top 3 have 1080p displays and have a MUCH bigger battery capacity than M1 MBP 13" which has a 2560-by-1600p display and a 58mah battery.

If the 16" MBP had the M1 and with it's 99mah battery it would easily have the best battery life of any laptop even with a 3072‑by‑1920 display.

The M1 is built on TSMC's 5nm node currently that is most efficient node available. After that it is the AMD 5000 series and AMD CPUs are built on the 7nm node.

Also keep in mind macOS Big Sur does not have low power mode. Later this year macOS 12 will be getting low power mode and that will also increase the M1 MBP battery life

So Linus has a visual demonstration showing the superior batter of the M1 Mac Pro and you have highlighted that the ranking of of these laptops from laptop.com is by battery size only rather than real life results.

That's an impressive post, dude. A bit hilarious that so many just ignored it and one even went on claiming others were "moving goal posts".

I wouldn't go that far ;)

I think PCs/Windows does a lot of things better and for many of us its a better tool
For me Mac's do everything expect gaming. There are more video editing and creative tools on Mac though.
Right now the current Intel 16" is underpowered and outdated I would not buy the current 16" for any kind of PRO
work. So a PC laptop is a better option for creative work until Apple updates the 16".

As for gaming, cloud gaming is the future.

I've found by and large, PC programs to be better, including but not limited to Office 365

Yeah, one size doesn't fit all, but for my needs, the PC is a better fit

You and your gaming :p

Is there a Rant's Corner here on MacRumors, because I have a thing or two to say too that is completely rants about all things and everything I don't understand or willing to go investigate. Instead I create a thread with an entire desktop screenshot of an error just to show that the image really is Big Sur and the error is real. Or someone else's screenshot lifted from the web to entice riots on here.

Either way, I lose and you lose. we all lose.

@maflynn which laptop Windows PC would you recommend for a Mac user such as myself who's thinking of switching to Windows full time? - I've heard that the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 is the one I should get. That's the one you have, right?!

Yes, but at the same performance?

I looked over this article and tried to pick the best processors and the latest Intel seems the closest and even then, the M1 in the multicore test is almost 2x faster

View attachment 1797192

Most of the other laptops that offer similar processing power fair a lot worse.

What apple did with the M1 is provide the consumer with incredible battery life AND excellent processing power. I prefer PCs but I give credit where credit is due, and Apple has out engineered Intel, Dell, HP and others who have similar class processors and laptops.

That is intel to blame. When they have a monopoly why spend millions of dollars to have CPU like M1 or better with that kind of low power wattage

And if you don’t read up on intel marketing numbers and looking at benchmarks above you would think that the i7 would be faster just because it is i7 well being older still an i7 being faster. And many of the public will think like that and Intel would be happy.

I have faced this problem only once. I basically factory reset the Mac and never faced this issue again.
When it comes to games, can’t help you with that one. I personally am not into games. If I was, I would purchase a PC.😂
Syncing photos- I take pictures from my iPhone usually. I found it interesting that in photos app on my iPhone, if it does not say update complete, it won’t sync on my Mac. As soon as it says update complete Or updated just now, it syncs immediately on my Mac.
That has been my experience, hope it helps.

It doesn't matter who's fault it is, I was just pointing out that with the M1, you get phenomenal battery life AND performance. The other member was trying to argue (as far as I could tell) that performance isn't really important.

This isn't a PC vs. mac thing, but when a product has a deficiency in one area there are those people who defend that product and marginalize/diminish the importance of that one thing. Then maybe in a later generation its superior and they crow about how great it is.

I feel that when people try to say that windows laptops are on par with the M1's battery, that's not entirely true because the M1 is overall superior to that class of laptops. There are obviously laptops like my Razer that have superior performance but my battery life while playing a game can be measure in minutes ;)

Honestly, Office 365 is a bit of a mess. Outlook is too dependent on buggy GPU acceleration to display the program where all the text disappears on me at least once a week and I need to restart Outlook. While better than Skype for Business, Teams is still a bit of a mess and can't compete with Slack or Discord. There is really no difference between Office 2007 and Office 365 for what I use it for, other than how it looks.

Also, as regards to Windows systems not having issues. At least a couple times a month, my work laptop will just blue screen. I have the SAME programs open EVERY SINGLE DAY and it just randomly blue screens. It says there is a problem with memory but I have had it tested. And it works fine the other 27+ days of the month.

The only things that are not on windows are apple photos and final cut. I have many awesome creative tools on my windows based systems. that argument is so 20 years ago.

I'm no fan of Teams, but I will say that I absolutely hate Slack and Discord, both are horrible and a mess
Discord is by far my favorite, then Slack. Its a bummer you don't like those, what do you use?

Teams did not have conversations/threads like Slack did for a long time, with a very large team, you can imaging trying to talk about two different things without having a separate thread :)

Teams video chat is not as good as Slacks as there are many times I want to point something out to someone and its easier to draw on their screen, Slack makes this happen.

Affinity was an Apple first company, so I have noticed Affinity Photo and Affinity Designer run better on Mac than their Windows alternatives.

While its not true by numbers that mac has more of these software, they have more quality software. Yeah we don't get some image editor software that someone developed 10 years ago with .NET. But we get more quality products. For example, Transmit is MASSIVELY better than Filezilla. I find Filezilla to be so frustrating to work with. Before Git was a major platform, there was subversion - Versions on mac was better than anything available on Windows. I do find that the Adobe products work better on mac than Windows too.
