Interesting. I guess I’d worry about it being overly sweet. Maple syrup is tasty but extraordinarily sweet; I can’t eat much more than a teaspoon or two without being overwhelmed. Well, something to consider should I every run across it.

My experience with Founder's is that most of the time - indeed, almost all of the time - but not quite always - they get that balance in their powerful beers just right.

What’s the CBS? I’m not sure I know this one.

CBS is by all accounts one of my favorite beers. It is the KBS, but they add Maple to the mix and sweet lord almighty, it is freaking delicious. I was able to snag two bottles, one I posted here in this thread. I have only seen it come out once in my area prior to last years offering.

I was able to pick up two bombers at a cost of $25 each and to me they are so worth it. They are not overly sweet, they are boozy, and they pack a punch. But it is super clean while also being pretty darn heavy. Like most of their beers, or most stouts and porters in general, as this one warmed up and was able to breath a little it completely changed the taste. The flavors really come through and the Maple to me is the stand out which is what makes is one of my favorites.

The place where I paid a visit today informed me that only one crate of Founder's CBS had come in - I was away at the time - and that the contents had all been snapped up within a day. The staff couldn't tell me what it tasted like, as none of them had been able to lay hands on so much as a single bottle themselves.

At present, they are trying to source a second crate of this legendary nectar, and - if successful - will put aside four bottles for me.

You have one very cool place, our big box stores didn't even get in full crates and these are places that are on the distribution lists as some of the biggest distributors for the various breweries. I had to go to three different locations to get the two bottles I was able to snag.

Heck even for the famed KBS, those are just as tough to get. Unless you are able to track them down in the local brewery area, those are super tough to come by. Be thankful your guy/gal has some really good connections for Founders.

I am able to get my hands on some pretty hard to get Stone beers, but that is only because Stone has a few local brew pubs where they put out their limited beers.

From the boards I visit, Founders does the same.

Re the KBS, the know I like it and will buy it; normally, if I am around, I will be tipped off that an arrival is due. Then, depending on what - i.e. how many - crates/bottles they receive, I will ask how many they will allow me to buy. If three crates arrive, I am allowed one, or most of the contents of one (I have bought - say - twenty bottles - rather than the twenty-four the crate holds).

One year, during a stock take, they discovered an extra crate of KBS; I was discreetly sounded out and simply said that I would take as many as I would be permitted to purchase; again, that was either 16 or 20 bottles.

Wow, that is awesome. I have yet to be able to buy more than one bomber or a four pack at a time. You have a special group of folks handling beer for yeah. I have made friends, maybe not good enough friends, with one of the folks who handles the purchasing and that is how I was able to get "one" bottle of the CBS, but other than that. Being able to pick up more than a four pack of the KBS is unheard of here! Very nice! One of my goals is to actually visit the brewery and try either or both the KBS and CBS on tap! That would be glorious I tell yeah!

You need to go to beer festivals and become friends with the companies directors/brewers. I was able to buy some special stuff well outside the per person allotment. Like Sceptical, I've gotten discreet calls and or emails asking me if I wanted to buy entire cases and one particular year, a small shelf of goodies. Though these were at stores with close relationships with the brewing companies.

A place I buy a lot of wine from gives me heavy discounts or throws in a case or two for free from time to time. I like to think I'm a shark and they are my remoras. It's a symbiotic relationship.

Yes, it is as you suggest.

I receive a permanent discount in the beer store and the wine store where I shop.

And yes, on occasion, I have been invited to wine tastings with the actual producers, and I receive phone calls, or - even without phone calls - sometimes, certain products are put aside for me if I am away and held until my return.

Now: I am what they call a 'good customer'; I buy the good stuff, and recommend the stores in question to others.

Very nice, I have yet to find anything like that and trust me I visit a lot of breweries and visit/talk with the folks. I don't buy a lot of wine, which might also be part of the subject. I have yet to buy a whole case like you and @Sceptical do. None of my small stores even remotely get anything like what you two are describing. We have a few big box stores such as Bevmo and Total Wine, however, the turnover at the two near me has been something of a challenge. Not saying it can't be done, it is just I have not been able to do it.

I would love to be able to get an entire crate full of Founders speciality beer. I have seen it online from quite a few people I interact with i.e. various beer forums and the like. It amazes me how much they can get! I am happy to get one, and I know folks, thank the high moon they are very sharing friends who are also able to get more than one.

Looks like I need to step up my buying game!!!!! :D

Despite my heavy cough and cold (actually it is what my doctor described as 'a bit of bronchitis, a bit of a flu and a bit of a temperature"), and despite now being almost five days into a course of antibiotics, I am about to risk a single, solitary beer - not least because Arsenal won today, and I am on leave and want to feel that, even if only a little - before heading to bed in around an hour or so.

The single beer is from the Founder's stable: The legendary Backwood's Bastard.
