Jeez, ya gotta love the name alone!

I will admit that the name drew me, initially.

However, when I see a strange (and alluring) new beer, I usually buy one or, at most two, (that is, if it is exceptionally strongly recommended, as was the case with the first time I tried KBS).

If then I like it, I will often return and purchase half a dozen, or the best part of a crate.

Both beers (all sort of imperial stouts, or Belgian quads: Buxton Brewery's Subliminal and their Subliminal With Coffee, along with a few Rocheforts (Rochefort 8 and Rochefort 10), and wine were bought today.

Two bottles of Chablis 1er Cru, and one of a Pinot Gris from Alsace.

If I’m still hungry once the pulled pork is done I’m thinking to have a couple Rochefort 10’s. (Due to some recent awesome production changes I’ve been called almost every single night. So, I might have to stick to only one so I have a semi-sharp mind.)

I thought of you today when purchasing a few bottles of Rochefort 10 - in fact, I haven't had one in ages.

In any case, if you like Rochefort 10, you will probably also like the St Bernardus 12 - another excellent Belgian quadrupel style beer.

I tried the St Bernardus a few years ago. That’s when I tried the Rochefort. Both I found based on recommendations in this thread...probably from you. Haha.

Probably, but I also asked @Happybunny - who knew his way around continental dark beers - for advice.

Supposedly the very best of these Belgian quadrupels is a beer that goes by the name of Westvleteren 12 (or XII).

It is a classic abbey style beer, and is brewed in exceedingly limited quantities by the monks of the Trappist abbey of Saint Sixtus in Vleteren in Belgium; commercial imperatives mean nothing to them, rather, they brew sufficient quantities of this nectar (regarded by some as the best beer in the world) to support their abbey and its activities.

Some years ago - as the roof required repairs - they increased production temporarily.

Apparently, you can buy this from the abbey directly, and in the abbey shop; the off licence where I buy my beers, (which is also an excellent delicatessen) told me that they had had one or two deliveries - or maybe two crates - of this sublime experience in the past decade, - possibly at the time the abbey had temporarily increased production.

I have never had this delight, but apparently, there was a time they shared some facilities with St Bernardus 12, and the two beers supposedly shared some similarities.

Picked up another bottle of scotch on the way home. Jeeez.

I wish Total Wine would just start a “subscribe and save” service like Amazon.

Anything interesting?

Actually, both my wine merchant and my beer vendor (both small, but quality establishments) have an arrangement in place whereby regular customers (your humble scribe is considered to be one) will always receive discounts on their purchases of alcohol.

Not really, I usually stick to what I like, so I picked up another Glenmorangie 18.

I had a similar arrangement with a small store near my house. I liked the owner and he was local. He always stocked Yanjing for me. He was Chinese. To be competitive he’d buy lots of certain things he could sell them for a good price. I never knew what he would have and if you developed a taste for something you don’t know if he’d stick it again. The convenience and selection of Total Wine fits me best. I still stop in a buy a wine from time to time.

For those of you who are into beer and have never been, I can't recommend the Great American Beer Festival enough. Had an absolute blast and will be going back! There was so much it wasn't even funny. They were not kidding on the 4000 beer tap list! 4000!!!

One of the highlights was 3 Floyd's Brewery - Alpha Claus Porter. For a porter the IBU sat around 38... Had an excellent flavor. Was the only beer I went back for to get seconds of. Their other offering from them that was outstanding was the "Munsterfest" which is their take on an Oktoberfest style beer. One of the best I had.

So many good beers... so little time...
