1. Combine sugar, brown sugar and butter in a 2-quart saucepan. Cook over low heat, stirring occasionally, until butter is melted (6-8 min).

2. Combine cooked mixture with ice-cream in a large mixing bowl, and beat at medium speed, scraping bowl often until smooth (1-2 min). I use a Vitamix and it works great. Store refrigerated up to 2 weeks or frozen up to one month.

3. I use the mugs below. So to serve fill one-quarter of the mug with batter, add one ounce (or more) of rum and fill the remaining mug with boiling water. Stir vigorously to create a frothy head. Sprinkle with nutmeg, optional (I don’t add it).

I like this rum very much.

So today, my wife and I attended Vineyard Day at our favorite central coast winery. We ended up with about a case and a half of wine from two locations and we also bought a future barrel! We will get to choose the varietal and be involved in the whole wine making process. We will also get to design our own label for all the bottles we will receive. I look forward to opening these with friends on a momentous occasion like my daughter’s college graduation or her wedding.

So today, my wife and I attended Vineyard Day at our favorite central coast winery. We ended up with about a case and a half of wine from two locations and we also bought a future barrel! We will get to choose the varietal and be involved in the whole wine making process. We will also get to design our own label for all the bottles we will receive. my wife and I are very excited. we were hesitant at first because it is a larger investment, but we figured that it would be a once in a lifetime opportunity. I will be contacting the owner tomorrow to discuss varietal choice. they plan to harvest most of the vineyard in the next week or so. I want to get a feel of what he thinks the best wine making grape will be this year. all things equal, my wife is leaning towards Syrah. it's a grape that typically does well in that particular area.

What about blends? Or does it have to be a single grape varietal? Or can you have a mixture?

We can do a blend, but it would probably have to be something they do or have done in the past. I wouldn’t want it any other way because everything they make is delicious and I wouldn’t want to risk creating something new that may not turn out well. Also, there single varietals are excellent and we’ve been buying their wine for 15 years now.

they do a rhone style GSM which is pretty good. that is a consideration for sure. they do not grow merlot or cab franc, so a Bordeaux style cab sauv would not be possible. that would have probably been my first choice.

That is exactly the sort of thing that I would have had in mind; done properly, a blend of Grenache (which is an exquisitely smooth grape - this is what Châteauneuf-du-Pape is usually, or mostly, made from), Syrah and Mourvedre can work exceptionally well in the hands of someone who knows what they are doing.

Anyway, enjoy the whole experience; I think you'll have great fun and - if I am honest - I must say that I almost envy you.

That sounds fabulous, how’d you like it?

Considering that it was my first beer in around a week (and in the Balkans, despite their superb beer and wine, I actually had very little to drink - most nights drinking nothing, on account of this heavy chest and head cold I have), and yes, I am still on medication, but suffice to say that I thought it absolutely delicious.

Sufficiently delicious to invest in more of them, when I next return to the off licence (and deli) in question.

Ah, well, good enough to buy again is fairly high praise. There are many things I’ve tried that were good but not necessarily enough to envisioning buying more. There’s so much excellent stuff out there that if it something makes it on the buy again list, it’s typically quite tasty.

Agreed.

When I buy something for the first time, I usually buy two bottles, in case I love it.

Occasionally, this has turned out to have been an impulsive and rash decision, in that I didn't much care for the beverage in question. But one bottle remaining can easily be attended to, on a night when little else beckons.

But, last night's stout was delicious, rich, tasty, nicely balanced, and not too ferociously robust (8.5%).

And agreed, that the quality of what is available has really improved (meaning that one's standards in terms of what one will buy, and keep, and/or buy again have also become a lot more demanding).

Had a few really good beers this past weekend that I have not had before, outside of the Xocoveza...

Bottle Logic Brewing - Resplendent Angel (2018) porter. Was really good!
Avery Brewing - Liliko'i Kepolo Witbier. Was very clean, lots of citrus notes. Had a few of these.
Stone Brewing - Xocoveza (2018). What can I say about this beer. Excellent and I have had every version that has come out and even some of the specialty tapped versions. For some reason I love this beer.

This afternoon, I opened a bottle of Vacqueyras - an elegant, smooth, rich, robust French wine (from the region adjacent to Châteauneuf-du-Pape) and let it breathe for a few hours prior to serving it with dinner.
