Trying an Ommegang Brut IPA today. Interesting! I do love the Ommegang beers

I was afraid it was going to be too lightweight for me, especially in the dead of winter.

I'm finding it tasty. The carbonation is truly champagne like. Not a lot of smell coming off this one. I wonder what food would pair well with this dry, dry, beer?

I had the Stone version of this on New Years. It wasn't bad and I agree re: the carbonation!

The only Ommegang beer I have liked so far, I haven't tried them all, was the Bourbon Barrel Vanilla Smoked Porter. Which I was able to track down at a Winter Stout and Porter event. The other was one of the beers from their Game of Thrones line, Take the Black Stout. I want to try their new King of the North, I just haven't been able to find one yet.

And now, I am sipping an Oloroso (a dry sherry from Spain).

Here's the fun detail: The cork broke (that has never before happened to me with sherry, but this is an old bottle, one I have had for a good few years), and couldn't be extracted by standard means - either twisting (as is the norm with sherry), or using a proper cork extractor - ie. wine bottle opener.

Thus, the cork had to be shoved into the bottle; cue, opportunity to decant into one of my two stunning Art Nouveau decanters with silver filigreed stoppers.

A buddy of mine went to Russian River Brewery and he was able to get me a few bottles.

Two bottles of Pliny the Younger
One bottle of Pliny the Elder
Three bottles of Blind Pig

Going to be a good weekend!

What is the difference (as beers) between Pliny the Elder and Pliny the Younger?

Sounds a wonderful haul - do enjoy.

There are couple differences between the two. PTE is available almost all year round and is about 8%, while PTY is 11% and comes out once a year.

They are both are IPA's, one is a triple IPA and the other I believe is considered an Imperial IPA (PTE). Both have a almost the same tastes, but the way PLY is able to mask the high ABV and give you such a delicious taste both at the front and back of the sip. They are both golden, however they have a distinct floral smell to each. Again, the flavor and overall tasting characteristics of PLY are amazing and its ability to mask the high abv, you would think you are drinking a 5-7% beer, but it is clocking in at 11%...

Sipping some Casillero del Diablo, a Chilean red, while watching the Oscars. I've always liked the origin story of the name, and the fact that it tastes pretty good doesn't hurt, either.

The story goes that many, many years ago the wine kept disappearing from the cellar where it was stored. Bummed out by this, the owner spread a rumor that the Devil himself lives in said cellar, and thus the legend, and name, was born. And I would imagine that the thief / thieves moved on to another cellar.
