Went to Modern Times new brewery in Anaheim Ca. Was able to try a whole slew of Barrel Aged beers from them. Oh my!!! The standout of the night, well there were two of them. "Monsters' Park Aged in Bourbon Barrels w/Vanilla" and the "Crossover Episode", which is a imperial/double Stout. Both were fantastic. I was also able to finally try their Pharaoh Ascendant line of beers which were no slouch! Good time was had by all. The place was great also!!!!

It was unfortunately a little too gassy. Tonight’s IPA is a little smoother. From Blighty don’t you know?

Was able to finally crack open and enjoy a bottle of "The Bruery's Black Tuesday 2019". Aged it for a year and boy was it worth it!!! Absolutely delicious and clocking in at 19.3%... Packed a nice little punch to boot!

Delicious. Can't wait to try the 2020 version, which I purchased two of. One to enjoy now and one to enjoy next year!

That sounds amazing; I don't think that I have ever had a beer that clocked in at 19.3%.

I have been getting this annual release since around 2015 or so. Each year they seem to be getting better and better. I have started aging them only a few years ago as I was way to impatient to wait for them. Then I just started buying more than one lol. It is a really good beer and as it starts to warm the true flavors really come through!

While I like, ah, robust and seriously alcoholic beers, I find that anything with an ABV of around 12% (or higher) can be pretty unbalanced, with the "heat", harshness, and pure power of the alcohol sometimes coming through too strongly; a beer that robust needs to have been flawlessly blended, so that the alcohol doesn't "burn" you.

You would love this beer than! Heat, nope... If you look it up, it is one of the highest rated barrel aged beers out there and for good reason. It is that good and like you mentioned, it is perfectly balanced and as it starts to warm up, the full flavor really shines! I have had several high ABV's where it is exactly what you mentioned... it is nothing but harsh hard alcohol being delivered via beer. Not good.

Another one, which is even higher and boy is it freaking amazing IMHO, is Sam Adams Utopia. I have been able to try it twice now and each time it did not disappoint. Is it strong, oh heck yeah. Clocks in at 28%... do you taste the hard alcohol... a little. Is it balanced and tasty... yup! It is another one that is able to perfectly blend the harshness, my description, of the hard alcohol with the subtleness of a full flavored and extremely complex beer. Perfect in my book. So far these two beers, given how high they are in the ABV range, are my two favorite. I have had a few beers that are around the 13-16% range that are just as good... while on the flip side, I have had several that i wouldn't look at again, let alone drink.

You've convinced me (and I'm delighted to see that you understood my concerns about what often turns out to be little more than a powerful "alcohol delivery device"); should I ever encounter this beverage, I shall be delighted to savour it.

The weather has been too miserable for the past two days to attempt to brave the elements in order to restock my beer, but I have opened a bottle of Californian red wine, one which I received as a gift from my brother.

This wine - Fog Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 - has been opened and has been busily breathing away to itself for the past few hours.

This is an extraordinarily good wine, and I must say that I am thoroughly enjoying it.
