Had the last of my "Coffee Porter" by Smog City, which in my opinion, is one of the best coffee porters out there. If you like coffee, then this one is the one to get. The flavor's are amazing and it almost tastes like a cup of coffee, but the porter comes through at the last minute reminding you it is a beer, but one hell of a beer it is.

Had an aged/cellar-ed version (only six months) of "The Bruery's S'more's" Barrel Aged Stout this weekend. Holy smokes. Clocking in at 16%, it packed a nice little punch. However the standout was the flavoring and overall notes of the beer, especially as it started to warm up a little. Absolutely Delicious!

16% in a beer? Wow.

That is considerably stronger than most wines, (even with global warming) and is venturing into the territory of fortified wines (sherry, port and their ilk).

Was the alcohol not overpowering?

In my experience, any beer with an ABV of much over 11% (and I love my Belgian quadruples, most of whcih fall between 9-12%) tends to be both unbalanced and too powerful. However if the blending has been done with a subtle hand, it could work very well.

That is the kicker... The Bruery, has mastered the art of not being overpowered by the alcohol. It is there, but it isn't in your face, I will knock you over type alcohol. If you have ever had a few of the high ABV stouts from other breweries you know what I mean. Heck, even Dogfish Head 120minute IPA is like that. Don't get me wrong it is a good beer, but the over the top alcohol and hops kinda sours the experience. Kinda. :)

You are correct, there is a very fine line between being to much and just right. So far, knock on wood, they have been just right. Good stuff!

Granted, I haven't sampled any really high - as in, stratospherically high - alcohol beers recently - and here, obviously, I am excluding my perennial personal favourites, St Bernardus Abt 12 (which clocks in at 10% ABV) and Trappistes Rochefort 10 (where the ABV is 11.3%), which I imbibe and enjoy regularly during the winter months.

However, a few years ago, I did sample quite a few - including several that had been recommended to me, and found that some of the 13% and 14% beers - even a 12% beer - were just too unbalanced, beers where the alcohol (and I am quite partial to alcohol, as my posts more than amply suggest), beers where that "burning" sensation of excessive untamed alcohol (something also found in less elegant whiskies) was far too pronounced for my liking.

A very fine line, agreed, indeed.

Great variety of 🍷Cab Francs🍷north of San Diego county in Temecula Wine country.

Great beer on the “island“ of Coronado (San Diego) my pick is the Orange Avenue Wit (wheat) bier from Coronado Brewing Company. Nice place/bar/area to enjoy 🍻 and it’s low key and airy

My beer - which has yet to arrive and the arrival of which I am anticipating with an unseemly degree of greedy delight - comprises several bottles of St Bernardus Pater 6, along with several bottles of Trappistes Rochefort 8, and a few of Trappistes Rochefort 10.

A few bottles of Erdinger Dunkel complete the selection.
