Actually, I have long been fascinated by the history of food and drink, (well, I am interested in history generally, but the culinary history of a country, or a dish, allows for some fascinating historical perspectives) and shall follow developments with considerable interest.

First, I'll have a drink. Schneider, one of my favourite wheat beer producers, recently launched a cloudy Hefeweizen, which is supposed to be a "modern variation" of their classic Hefeweizen "TAP 01". That's a bit of a shame, as "TAP 01" (it used to have a different name) was my very first wheat beer in 2002 (or was it 2003?). The "new" version is yeasty with banana, but I also find prunes in the flavour. The nose is somehow uneven. I'm disappointed.

They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but, as it happens, I had actually opened a bottle from my own stash, the legendary, classic, Hefe Weissbier, from Weihenstephaner before I came across your post.

This is glorious.

I have a Weihenstephaner Dunkel from the same shop, which I consider to drink tomorrow or after this one. Not sure yet!
The Weihenstephaner Dunkel?

A wonderful beer.

One of the things that might influence your choice of beverage is the minor matter of how many of them you have still remaining.

For, lamentably, it seems that I am down to my very last one.......

Earlier, I enjoyed an Original Helles from Weihenstephaner.

And, as I wish to cling to my sole, remaining bottle of hefeweissbier Dunkel (from Weihenstephaner), I have opened a bottle of the divine Korbinian, instead, as - given my ample supply - my risk of running out is currently rather low.

Today I'm in a student bar at the invitation of a barman. There's a Maisel's Dunkel here. It tastes very delicious like banana milk. Quite recommendable, if you like dark Weizen.

It’s no Weihenstephaner, of course.
