Interesting comments about MagSafe - having a chance I would take standard USB-C / Thunderbolt any time. It is great when you can share peripherals, hardware, architecture, software...

Keep me my USB-C / Thunderbolt!
YUP! This.

And, if you go to the Charger threads many don't use the Apple Chargers and buy their own. Going BACK to MagSafe renders all those third party chargers useless.

And, over on the port thread, we know folks hate dongles, so don’t say just put a MagSafe dongle on the end of the cord.

After using the Mac Mini 16/512 M1 for a little over a week (returned now), I have decided to keep my Macbook pro 16" i9 for a few more years or buy only need.
The Mini M1 is a brilliant machine and meets all my needs. With that said, I will not have to buy pro machines anymore in the future which is good. I save a lot of money.
My main use is Sony A7R III Raw editing and 4K video for real estate.
I have the same two machines. I'm curious why you returned the Mini M1? Were you just "trying it out", or did it not meet your expectations?

I've found the Mini M1 to be faster than my 8-core i9 MBP for just about every task I've used it for.

I was even thinking of selling the MBP, but I need a laptop for work and changing it for a current M1 MBP would only offer small performance improvements (and weaker graphics). Since we've no idea when the new "M1X" machines will be out, I'll hang on to the Intel MBP16, even though I expect it will lose a lot of value if the next generation M1 MBP16 is as fast as people are expecting it to be.

I think the idea is that the new machines might have magsafe AND still be able to charge via USB-C, so you could use either an Apple dedicated charger or any suitable USB-C power supply.

However, this doesn't sound like an Apple-like thing to do, so I am skeptical of the rumor. Perhaps they will have a "magsafe cable" that is still USB-C, but in 2 parts with a magnetic connector between them -> same USB standard, but with the safety of the old magsafe cables. Whether you could pass all of the USB-C protocols (video, power, network, data) through a magnetic connector remains to be seen.

I bought a $15 USB-C magnetic adapter and it does power and data.

Im not 100% satisfied with the design of my specific one, the power and data part works just fine, but I just picked one from Amazon which said it did power and data.

I bought a 13” M1 MBP for my partner for work. It’s great for all the previous comments on it, but doesnt meet my needs, so I personally have held off awaiting the 14”.

I currently have a 16” maxed MBP, and it is too big and heavy for my daily use, as I am now a desktop guy. So will be looking for that sweet spot of mobility and good speed, which I know the 14” will deliver on [given the M1 speeds].

There is also the important point of not all pro software runs natively on the M chips at present.

It would have to be Thunderbolt to replace an existing port.
This is similar to mine.

I know I'd be totally happy with an M1 MBA but I'm holding off for budget reasons. The good thing is, when I can afford one, there will be a newer better model out.
This is exactly what I’m doing. On top of that, I’m almost debt free (besides my student loan). Hopefully by the end of February!

My M1 mini arrives Tomorrow.
I moved all my power-hungry stuff to windows after the 16" fiasco and I'm very happy with the performance.
3080 knows how to please a man :D

The mini will be for my usual iOS dev stuff, nothing crazy so I'm sure it will be just fine.

I have been using my M1 Macbook Air 8 GB 256 GB for about a week, and I have absolutely ZERO buyer's remorse. I hope this thing lasts me 5 years. It is simply perfect for what I need.

I came from the i7 16GB 256GB 2015 15" Macbook Pro. Thing was getting slow and heavy. The Macbook Air is so light and exactly what I was looking for.

I bought a MBA M1 8/512 this past December. I am expecting at least a year before Apple refreshed the MBA so no remorse, but maybe I would have instead if I got a MBP knowing the 14" are coming soon without touchbar!

As I see it, the MBA M1 is "best of" before an update comes and then you do not know how Apple has designed the new computer.

The MBA lacks a fan that collects dust in the computer and can break. It is also completely silent. It has an improved screen. Unfortunately "only" 720p 2020 with improved software. In 2020, the MBA should have 1080p!

Finally, Apple has left the Butterfly keyboard, which has been the biggest design mistake, but still Apple has updated it 3 times before admitting that they would have scrapped the solution earlier. MBA M1 has even better battery life.

If you buy an MBA, you get the "best of" before the update of the MBA comes. Then you do not know if Apple comes up with new design mistakes or if new components can create problems.

A very good observation.

Although I think the MBP is better than the MBA :).

The Air won't get redesigned anytime soon and computers always get faster so I'm good.

I do not think that Apple will update the MBA until 2022. As usual, Apple wants to milk out the last of a product and it would be strange to update the MBA already in Q3 when the update of MBP 14 "and 16" will probably come.

At the same time, one may wonder when the MBP M1 has a shorter delivery time than the MBA M1.

Could you post a link to this, please?

[edit: saw that someone already posted a link to one here: https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0896QK2J5?geniuslink=true]
It's already saved my MBA from my marauding dogs once, but there is an issue to where Id probably get a different style cable. We are discussing them here:

Of course I'll say that because the two things people dislike about dongles, the size and having to remember to bring an extra thing, just aren't an issue with these magnetic adapters. No one is saying Apple should make a dongle which is similar in size to their USB-C > USB-A adapter.

On the body side, just like with the BT transmitter of my previous mouse, I just leave the magnetic adapter plugged into one of my ports and it, for all intents and purposes, just becomes part of the computer that is always there. On the cable side, there is zero difference between having to bring a cable and having to bring a cable with an adapter which remains attached to one side; and really, Apple is also going to make a cable which is USB-C on one side and MagSafe on the other so you won't even be dealing with an adapter attached to a regular USB-C cable. And unlike a computer with one port you will always have at least one port free, or three the case of the upcoming 16", for regular USB-C cables should you leave your magnetic cable at home.

No Regerts!

I use a 14" windows laptop regularly and notice no functional difference in the display size from my MBP 13.3" display.

Resale only matters when it comes time to sell -- which I don't foresee having a need to do for another 3+ years at which point any differential will be substantially less. Not to mention the Intel macs I replaced would've lost even more value by 21Q3 vs selling them in 20Q4.

Magsafe? No thanks. I *much* prefer USBC power as I can share powerpoints with other devices. Plus there's far less need for routing a power cord across a walkway given the huge battery life these things have. Which can be extended substantially and inexpensively with a ~20,000mah+ USBC-PD powerbank.

Are we saying Apple is going to replace the USB-C port used now for charging. With a dedicated proprietary port like was used when MagSafe was something different than the phone MagSafe technology. So now we will be loosing a port to support dedicated charging?

I hope these are just rumors that never come to fruition.

No one is saying that because no one outside of Apple actually knows for sure. The rumors say that Apple is adding more ports so the assumptions are either a MagSafe port in addition to the regular USB-C ports, or a MagSafe USB-C adapter (which Apple previously filed a patent for). I hope either assumption comes true, but the latter will help more people.
