my issue with ipad - Sidecar not work in VPN

I bought ipad during Covid to used it during homeoffice as a second display. I thought that connecting ipad to my macbookpro via usbc cable is easy enough to resolve all possible issues.

How i was wrong :-( everything works fine until I switch my anyconnect VPN client on. Then connection between my macbook and ipad is lost eventhough there is a usbc cable still connected.

I tried to resolve it with apple support but no luck. They always say that ipad is part of continuity feature and therefore wifi connection among ioad to macbook is mandatory.

And of course there is no way to change my company’s policy to enable connection from vpn to my local network, this is a huge security issue.

So my investment to ipad did not make sence.

You don't need to use Sidecar, there are third party apps that do the same thing. The main advantage of Sidecar is that it's free. But other apps are as good or better, just not free for MacOS (some are free for Windows). Have a look at Duet, Astropad or EasyCanvas to see if they work with a VPN

Yes, i can try to find a workaround but i prefere to use OS native features instead of installing additional sw. Sidecar definitely does not work as documented for example here (see chapter “use one of the following connectios”) https://support.apple.com/en-gb/guide/ipad/ipad2b1aa3be/ipados. Connecting ipad via wire shall be working always with no matter if computer is in or out of vpn.

then if you want native features only, indeed you investment in iPad did not make sense for you, as you said

Stage Manager or Splitscreen aren’t a workaround, they’re a fundamental part of the OS.
OP wasn’t saying SM and splitscreen are workarounds in general, but that if you have to use them in a situation that you shouldn’t have to, such as to prevent an app from reloading for no legitimate reason, then they are in that situation a workaround.

Tried to attend a Google Meet via Safari with my iPad today. Denied access to voice and video, pop up,told me to go to preferences in Safari to enable. Seems like there is no way to do that on iPad. Struggled while the person on the other end waited. Threw in the towel, forwarded invite to my Mac, connected there.

On the address bar, tap on AA -> Website Settings then allow website to access camera and mic.

I just use the Gmail app for Google Meet though.

iPadOS/iOS sorts by “date modified” AFAIK, so as @iPersuade suggested, sorting by date on iPadOS does list recently changed first, so this:

is directly solved when you sort by date, at least on iPadOS 17.5.x. And then there is the search option, even in »Recents« you can nail things further down by date, file type, etc.

At least the described problem seems to be quite easily solved - even when just relying on Apple’s Files.
I just discovered something about this kind of date search that hadn't even occurred to me before. Maybe you even stated this and I missed it. When you search by date, like you did in your example, Files will return files that were (1) created, (2) modified, or (3) last opened on that date. So, even though you may not be able to get fine grained among the three, the Files app recognizes the distinction and searches all three date-categories.

It'd be great if you could search a range of dates or narrow down the type of date you were interested in among the three. That said, I've never had difficulty finding a file that I really needed; so, this would be a useful addition but is not a deal killer feature for my use, anyway.

I work with a lot of Adobe PDF files for my line of work, and I cannot edit them on the iPad, rendering the iPad useless for my job. Which is unfortunate because any time I go out of town I have to carry around my laptop. I wish I could ditch the laptop and have the iPad and Mac Studio combo. But doesn't seem possible at this time :/

I believe FileBrowser app has a function to edit PDFs. There may be other apps out there that has that function.

I'm not saying iPad has no limitations (I haven't found an app that lets me edit epubs on the iPad, for example), but often when a function isn't there natively in iPadOS, you can find it in 3rd party apps.

This is the error message that I always get when I try to do any PDF work on anything other than a computer unfortunately :/

are you saying you can't even open the pdf to read?
I only can if I have previously edited the PDF in Adobe and exported it as a normal "non-adobe" pdf. Just a normal PDF if that makes sense.

I could try and link you to one of the PDFs so you can see what I am talking about.

You answered your problem. Save as non-Adobe and then you should be able use the app of your choice. I can use FileBrowser Pro to open PDF, as well as PDF expert and other apps On iPad.

When the iPad Pro M1 came out, I went all in - no laptop, just iPad and keyboard. After about 4 months of relatively good use ... I went on a trip and had to host a zoom call, present a PPTX and take notes (in Evernote). I traded the iPad in for an M2 MacBook
