While were are at it. Thanks for a nice app. I love the features and customization of screens. Just wish there was an indoor workout I could use on my elliptical trainer and weight training. Even if it was paid upgrade or new app (with a more fitting name), I would buy it.

Glad you like the app. The next version in a couple of months will have indoors workouts including elliptical. It won't include weight training yet because that is a bit more specialised. But maybe in the future.

Sounds great!! hope it is not too many month.. :)

I don't really need a specialized weight training workout. What I want, is Just a simple generic indoor workout like Other in Apple's workout, with Heartrate and Calories related fields, but without all the gps, distance, pace and elevation etc. stuff.

I must admit that I hadn’t really thought about adding the “Other” workout, so I will look into it.

Would be great if it isn't to much hassle :)

But glad to know elliptical workout is planned, that is most important for me :)

Sorry I asked this in another thread and didn't get anywhere.

I assume the data stored by WorkOutdoors can then be moved into Garmin Connect using something like RunGap, but what data is moved? I regularly use Garmin Challenges to challenge friends and family to events (like total running mileage over a week or a month) and I would like to continue doing this if using WorkOutDoors.

Thanks

You can export the GPX data from workoutdoors and import it in Garmin without additional app.

As @rbart says you can export a GPX file from WorkOutDoors and import that into Garmin Connect, or use a third party app to export from Apple's Health system.

In either case all the workout metrics should be sent to Garmin. I can't guarantee that they will be used for Garmin's challenges but I can't see why not unless Garmin specifically ignore workouts from non-Garmin devices.

“Mini fields” question...
...I’ve tried “distance v target” and also “current lap average heart rate” display in the mini fields.

I’ve not done a proper run as yet, but if I just fire an activity whilst sat at my desk, I see those metrics updating if used as regular fields in a screen, but they display as empty when selected as mini fields?

Am I doing or expecting something incorrectly or is this a bug?

IGNORE: Seemed to just work fine the second time I ran, can see distance v target counting now as I just sit still...also heart rate displayed.

They work when I just tried them out. Just to check: have you got auto-pause switched on? That can cause issues when testing whilst at your desk.

Also, what do you mean by mini-fields and regular fields? Are you talking about the tower layout with larger fields at the top and smaller ones at the bottom?

They work now, just didn’t work the very first time...

What I mean is the fields you set on the watch that you can’t defime in the screens bit of the app...I think you call them “bottom line”.

I don’t use auto pause, and the same data metric was counting up on the regular screen field.

Ah the bottom line fields. They are a sort of "easter egg" for people who dig deep into the settings. Not sure why they would not be working before but glad that they are now.

An idea/tip for indoor workout. Option to livestream from watch to app on iPhone during workout. While waiting for indoor support, I have found an app which can do that and it is really really nice to use the phone as display when e.g. working out on an elliptic trainer with arms are moving back and forth. Same with other indoor stationary workout machines, but I guess it could also be handy for outdoor cycling ala Garmin edge, maybe i would start to use my phone mount then :).

I will add iPhone support in the future because it would be useful as you say. Although at the moment I am concentrating on the Watch app as much as possible.

Can anyone tell me if the Cycling activity allows you to set an auto-pause? I found it for running but for the life of me don't see it for cycling.

Sorry about that - the current version of the app uses Apple's auto-pause feature, which is only available for running. However the next version will include auto-pause for other activities, including cycling and walking. I gave up waiting for Apple to implement it!

No apologies needed. You have created one heck of an awesome app. I look forward to the new functionality.

So you and everyone else knows. I've been using Workoutdoors for a little over 2 weeks for both cycling and running in the hopes of replacing my Garmin Fenix 5. This app has performed flawlessly. The "route" feature is more accurate than my Fenix. I was riding 25 miles off-road simply following a route using Fenix and Workoutdoors and the Workoutdoors app knew every turn and the interface was easier to follow than the Fenix. I can't say enough good things about this app.

Thanks for that. It makes my day when I hear that someone finds the app so useful!

Hi @cfc. Love the app.
Went out for an early morning run today. My alarm went off during the run (yes that early!) and when I returned to the app it had switched to a profile I never use - rowing and tagged the session as a row not a run.
Just a FYI

That is very strange and not something I have ever heard of before. In theory there is no way that an app can change the type of activity during a workout, so I wonder if you actually tapped Rowing by accident.

The "last used date" for a workout type is set when starting a workout, so if the Rowing option on the main menu shows today then you probably pressed the wrong button. If it doesn't then please could you email me the .wkt file for the workout and I will investigate. To do this tap the Export button 3 times quickly (instead of once for GPX) and send the file to info@workoutdoors.net. Thanks.

Just went back to review. My last activity prior to this was a run but you’re right - I’ve clearly set off for a row rather than a run - definite user error.
I’m just not sure now how the row option was up on my list of activities.

Anyway problem solved thanks for the response

Glad it's sorted. The list is ordered by last used time so rowing should not have been high up if you have never used it. However it will be higher now than it was as a result of being used. Hope it hasn't put you off the app!

No not at all. Happily moved from a Fenix 3 to AW4 and your app and no plans to change.

Thanks

Hi there!

I've recently bought Your app. With AW4 it's a great replacement for Fenix 5. I've tested it with running, walking, cycling and I encountered a couple of problems.

  1. When I review my run/walk on iP X, avg pace and time on the tab and lap avg are spot on. But when I touch the graph, all data is much slower. At the highest point it's 9'31" (attached screenshots). Why is that? Also there's no Max Pace.
  2. Elevation is strange. No gain and loss but the graph, laps (and Fenix 5) shows something different.
  3. When I run there's no cadence - just broken lines. GPS is good, iPhone is disconnected, so everything is from the watch.

Thanks for buying the app. I am glad you like it.

Firstly if you do not have cadence then you may not have given the app permission to use the pedometer. To check this run the Settings app on the iPhone and select Privacy then Motion & Fitness, then make sure Fitness Tracking is enabled and so is WorkOutDoors. Then go to the Watch app on the iPhone and select Privacy and ensure that Fitness Tracking is enabled there. You should then get steps/cadence/stride length metrics for future workouts.

The reason I mention this first is that it affects the pace figures that you are seeing for each position when touching the graph. These pace figures are instantaneous figures reported by Apple at each point of the workout. Instantaneous pace is much harder to calculate than average pace over a lap or workout because the period is much shorter.

The longer the period then the more accurate the value but the less responsive it is. For instance if you stop but you are using a 1 minute period then the pace value takes a long time to catch up. But if you use a short period then the inaccurate distances make more of a difference. Apple provide instantaneous pace values from GPS and from the pedometer. The app uses the pedometer value by default, because it is more accurate, but if it is not available (like for you) then it uses the GPS, which is much less accurate for instantaneous pace.

So the lack of pedometer data probably explains the strange instantaneous pace figures. Although to be honest even Apple's instantaneous pace from the pedometer is not great, so in the future I may use some sort of smoothing algorithm on the iPhone analysis screen.

I am not sure about the max pace and elevation issues. Please could you send me the "WKT" files so that I can analyse them. To do this tap the Export button 3 times quickly (instead of one time to export GPX) and send the WKT file to info@workoutdoors.net. Thanks.
