Would it be possible to add the ability to use one of the shortcut gestures/button presses (crown and side button for instance) to start an activity? I may or may not have forgotten to start my ride several times and it would be really nice to be able to just hit the buttons while I'm riding to start it instead of having to stop and take my gloves off.

What happens if I take the watch off my wrist to charge it while recording an activity?

I assume that the AW will enable the lock (wrist detection), but what about the WOD? Can I pause and charge during the rest, then unlock it and go back to recording without losing anything?
I've had to do it quite a few times now on longer hikes because my Watch is now old. Take it off the wrist, put it to charge and wrap it around the battery pack, unlock it manually, resume/continue the workout in WorkoutDoors and drop it in my bag.

Never had any issues with the activity stopping or not recording.. my heart rate and the metrics related to it are the only ones missing for the period that it is charging, everything else is perfectly fine.

Feature suggestion (dangerous to say - maybe I’ve missed it): when transferring a new route to the watch, automatically select it as being active on the watch.

I also have a simple feature request. With the new ability to make awesome datascreens, with merging of fields, it would be nice to be able to cope a screen layout from one activity type to another. I have made a data rich screen I would like to use on all my workout types.

I’ve been asking for that too! Would make it so much easier to test too as well as real world usage

In the beta you can press the 3 dots to the right of an activity, select “navigate” and select a route. Here you can order by “date added”, which makes it quite simple to do what you wish for. The beta is awesome!

Hello,

I have been using WorkOutDoors for a few years now, mostly for cycling but also for mountain hiking and alpinism.
One feature that I miss is the current elevation pace. I found in the app the average pace, but this is not really useful : to be able to know if I am on time according to my planned schedule, I need to know if I am climbing at 300m/hr or 400m/hr for instance.

I saw the "elevation pace (lap)" metric but I am not sure it will work : how do I set the length of a lap for instance ? Is it possible to define it in minutes (like, a 10 minutes lap to have my elevation pace over the last 10 minutes) ?

Thank you for your help, and for the app !

Current Elevation Pace is on my to-do list but not high on the list. It is gradually rising though. The problem with using lap elevation pace (or interval elevation pace) is that they both reset at the start of a lap/interval.

The reason the app does not offer it is because calculating a current pace is difficult. It requires you to define an interval over which to calculate the pace. This is why the app leaves it to watchOS for current horizontal pace, but watchOS does not provide a value for current vertical pace.

When I implement it properly I will use a rolling window that may or may not be configurable. So maybe the last minute or whatever people think would be a good default.

@cfc Long-time WorkOutDoors user and I'm on the dev iOS beta (currently b3). I'd like to help test the beta on the iPhone Watch if you're still taking testers?

Hi Ian,
I have a question. If you put the watch in Low Power Mode and start workoutdoors, will that save battery during hike for example and will it display and save all the data as normal. And if it does save battery how much do you think is normal to save. I always carry my phone with me, if that matters.

Low Power Mode will definitely save battery but it's impossible to say by how much because there are so many variables.

The app should run as normal with no loss of data. The only thing you may notice is the lack of the always on display if your watch has that.

Note that rather than manually putting the watch into low power mode you could enable the setting in the Workout section of Apple's Settings app on the watch. This will switch the watch into low power mode whenever you start a workout session in any app (not just Apple's app).

Not sure why it has taken me years to realize that it’s not there.

Has anyone ever asked for weather (temperature etc) to be captured with outdoor activities ?

I may add weather information in the future but only if I can find somewhere that provides the data for free.

Apple started providing it for free up to a point a while back but I am not sure how much it would cost me after that point. The app’s business model of a one-off payment doesn’t allow for any more on-going costs.

for what it's worth (I guess you did more research than me), I used Open Meteo for some projects a while ago and it seems to still be available : https://open-meteo.com/. No subscription required.

Thanks that's not too expensive. I will investigate at some time if things ever quieten down.

I have been using WorkOutDoors daily for 5+ years and it’s been great. All the best to @cfc for making this wonderful application! It has helped me find my way around new cities and explored new places thanks to the detailed map.

I just have one feature request. I’d like exported GPX files to be named by date (YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM) instead of being named ”Wednesday evening walk”. At last as an option. I often use the GPX export option to geotag photos, and it would be great not having to rename the files and keep track of what date that ”Wednesday evening walk” file was from. Especially when exporting two Wednesday evening walks from two different weeks at the same time.

Just a minor thing. Works either way, but would make it a little bit more convenient.

That is on my to-do list but at the moment I am focussed on the navigation improvements. Sorry about that.

Went for a simple well known route to me yesterday evening and the new beta worked great. I like a lot of the new little things as well.

Longer run on a few unfamiliar trails this weekend so will see how that goes…
