Do you think that these metrics will you present in 2022?
Probably not, but maybe. I don't like to set myself deadlines because priorities change and some features take longer than expected.

That’s great! And the other metrics will be able to be viewed in WOD?
Yes, the ground contact time and vertical oscillation metrics have been in the app for a while, but previously only available when you run with a Stryd footpod. Now they will also be available for watchOS 9 users.

There are the usual 7 metrics for each of them available during a workout: current, average, graph, lap average, previous lap average, interval average and previous interval average. You can also analyse them in the Steps tab of the iPhone app, with graphs, maps and lap/interval breakdowns. Similar data is available in the workout summary screen of the watch app.

The running power will have even more capabilities including alerts when it goes too high or low, interval schedule power targets and also power zones. I think there are now over 100 metrics associated with running power in the latest beta (mainly due to the many "time/% in zone x" metrics).

Hi cfc,

Been using the app for several months now on my AW7 and I'm really enjoying it. I had a strange issue today when I was doing an outdoors run and there seemed to be an issue with my heartrate being properly tracked. I use a Polar H10 paired directly with the watch, I don't have it paired to the phone at all. I usually bring my phone with me when I workout and listen to streaming music from the phone while the strap is paired with the watch but this morning I left my phone at home and listened to streaming music from the watch while also using paired strap. During a ~3 mile run my heartrate as tracked by the app kept creeping down even while I was running full pace, when it should normally be between about 150 to 160bpm.

I double checked that the Polar was paired with the watch which it appeared to be, I also have it set to connect to the strap within the workoutdoors app before the workout begins. Despite that my heartrate didn't appear to be accurate at all for the run. For the last portion of my workout I did a brief outdoor walk and initiated it through the default Apple workout app and it seemed to reflect the correct heartrate as measured by the Polar. When I got home I paired the strap with the phone to doublecheck the battery but it says that it's full on the Polar Beat app. I've attached a couple of screenshot, the top two are the running workouts with the heartrate drops and the last one is the walking workout through the default workout app. Any ideas why this could have happened?

That is very strange. I have never seen that before, but the fact that it is showing some values (albeit strange ones) means that it is almost certainly showing the data that was coming from the sensor. It may have had some cadence lock issues, which are rare but possible when running.

Please send the wkt file to info@workoutdoors.net and will take a look when I get time. To do this tap the Export button 3 times quickly.

Absolutely, glad you can take a look at this. To clarify, when I select the export option in the app it asks me if I want to export the GPX, TCX, or FIT file. Which one do you need?

Edit: Sorry just realized you told me what to do. Sending file now.

Just downloaded the app. There is a Google drive of gpx files by the trail association committee for the section of the north country trail that I’m going to do. But every time I try to open one in another app (workoutdoors or try emailing it to myself as an intermediate step to get it into workoutdoors) it seems to turn it into an XML file. Does Google drive just suck for this?

@cfc : has Apple provided information yet if 3rd party apps can use the new button on the Ultra?
It is probably in the documentation but I haven't looked yet. I have been focussed on making the app make the most of the 49mm screen.

My current plan is to release a version of WOD to the App Store after watchOS 9 is released but before the Ultra is available. This version will have the new running metrics and has been in beta testing for several weeks. It has been very stable and I was planning to release it as soon as watchOS 9 was released.

However when I ran it on the simulator of the new Apple Watch Ultra it looked slightly strange on the larger screen. I don't plan to release an Ultra-friendly version until it has been tested on real watches, which meant that early Ultra owners would have tried the app on it and been disappointed. So I decided to make sure that the current beta worked on the 49mm screen (on the simulator at least).

As I plan to release the beta as soon as possible I wanted to get a version in testing as soon as possible, and I wanted to make as few changes as possible, so I focussed on the screen changes and ignored the Action Button (and other stuff like complications etc).

I will now look into the button and may even release another beta if it looks easy, but I wanted as much testing time as possible on the 49mm screen changes, in case they affect the other watch sizes. They shouldn't affect them but coding is always a rush at this time of year (thanks Apple!).

Apologies for the long-winded explanation of why I haven't yet looked into the Activity Button!

Edit: I have just looked into the Activity Button and Apple haven't yet provided any documentation on how apps can use it!

I haven't heard of this with Google drive but it seems quite a common problem generally. When someone says that the app won't read a GPX file then the first question I ask is if it really is a GPX file. Often it is a GPX file but has the wrong extension, or it has the right extension but the wrong contents (usually HTML).

Unfortunately there isn't much the app can do about it. Sorry about that. Maybe someone else has some hints about getting GPX files from Google drive?

I had no idea this thread was here lol! But glad I found it!

I just bought WOD today in anticipation of my Ultra - I installed in on my 44mm S5.

I literally installed it then hit record and had no time to change any settings except activate Strava uploads.

This app really makes me frustrated that my eyesight is getting so poor lol

I usually just use the Strava AW app for hiking. I like the simple layout with the most pertinent info. BUT. I wish there was the option of having a quick look at more metrics and the graphs for some of the data that WOD has - and I think with some time customizing the pages it's really going to be my goto.

@cfc So, will be be able to install the wOS 9 version on the Ultra - and it will look slightly off - or will it just not be available to install on the Ultra until you release the final Ultra compatible version?

Just wondering if I would need to keep using my AW5 for a bit even after getting the Ultra... Thanks!

When you tap on a GPX file and it opens as an XML file, tap “...” and then “Open in”

I had troubles like that when I downloaded GPX from website directly on my iPad.
iPad OS rename the file in other kind, I think it was TCX.

I link my google drive to the website, then open the file in WOD from the drive App

In theory the app should look fine on the Ultra. Even if I do not release the watchOS 9 version then Apple usually make apps built for the older models look ok on a new model. They usually just add a small black border around the edge.

If I do release the new watchOS 9 version then it will make the most of the bigger screen due to the code changes I made yesterday, and so it will hopefully look great.

The problem would only have happened if I had released the watchOS 9 version without making those changes, because then watchOS assumes that it will handle the Ultra because it has been built with the latest development system.

So in summary it should look fine. I can't guarantee that it will work until I actually try it on a physical device myself, but I have done as much as possible at the moment by making sure that it looks ok on the simulator.

Hi, some tips or advice from WOD users please? The rain has started again in the UK revealing my only annoyance with my AW4, the touchscreen having a fit as rain/sweat dribbles over it. I’ve set a shortcut (spin crown up) to put on water lock but this obviously limits functionality such as swiping between screen. I love the look of the AWU but for me, spending an extra £400 for a button is a little steep.
Does anyone have set ups that work well for them in wet conditions? I love WOD and any suggestions would be welcome 👍

Nothing happens— it just takes me to the WOD app, but there is still nothing in my routes.
I had something like this when I was on holiday, are you trying to download the GPX via a mobile device? What I had to do was in edge if I send to files it downloaded as an html, if I just click download it downloads it to edge and then I can move the file and it imports fine!!

Or do it on a laptop if you possibly can!!

The workoutdoors app has freed me from Garmin and allowed me to only have 1 watch, the apple watch. To say I'm a fan of the app is an understatement. Looking forward to getting my hands on an Ultra.
The only feature/app from my garmin that I'm missing, is a 3rd party app that I use when racing:
Peter's Race Pacer
Effectively it allows you to enter the race distance, goal pace and then you hit the lap button at each km / mile board, and the distance and average pace displayed (not recorded) is rounded to .0 at that distance. It then also displays what pace you need to run to hit your target time.
With the ultra's "action" button, it's feasible for the apple watch ultra to support it now, someone (hint hint) just needs to build it.

The ability to "snap" to the nearest mile/km when you pass a marker post is on my list of features to add. It wouldn't require the action button. It would be another command that you can use the Shortcut settings to associate with any action (including the action button on an Ultra). It isn't particularly high on the list at the moment but will rise as result of your request.

Glad you like the app!

Ian, anyway to have the Interval schedule to allow the use of percentage of threshold power when creating a interval workout?

The current version only allows interval targets to specify power in watts, but the next version of the app (which I believe you are testing) has power zones. This allows a threshold power to be defined and percentages of that can be used to define the zones.

The interval targets can now be specified in zones as well as watts, so you can now define a target intensity indirectly via zones. I thought about adding intensity targets as well as zone targets but no-one has ever asked for them with heart zones, which have been in the app for many years, so I figured it wasn't necessary. However if enough people ask for them then I will add them.
