Unfortunately I doubt there is much I can do about it. WOD simply tells watchOS to speak a phrase and watchOS does the rest by using the Siri system. The app tells watchOS which voice to use, the volume etc but nothing in that code has changed and if worked for watchOS 8 and doesn't for watchOS 9 then it sounds like watchOS 9 has broken something. It is strange that it only affects a few people though, especially as they use different voices.

Does it help if you try a different English voice in the app's Voice settings? For example the US voice or the UK voice.
To add: I’m also from the Netherlands, have US voice, set to play at the watch. Interactions are set to Duck. Have never heard the robotic voice. I may add that I’m on the newest public beta so maybe it’s fixed in that version? Uhmm, not entirely true… ios latest Beta (16.1), watchos public beta 1 (9.1).

4 people have now mentioned this but I can't spot a pattern. Rebooting the watch fixed it for 2 of them so please try that.

What country are you in and what voice are you using?
Reboot didn't work for me either.
But the other solution mentioned by someone else above; to send some other setting and then resend the original settings, worked. Now it's back to normal.

I am in Germany, and using the EN voice.

I also have another question. I explicitly added the vertical oscillation metric for running on to the screen- using a Watch SE on watchOS 9, but it simply displayed '--' throughout the entire workout, and didn't show up in metrics data in the run details as well.

I tried a run with the inbuilt Apple Workouts and for that i got all the new vertical oscillation, stride length and the ground contact time metrics visible in the results, so I know that at least it works.
What could be the case that it didn't work in WOD?

RE: robotic voices... I noticed the same thing. But it was because when I swapped to my new phone, the Siri voice was changed in the phone settings. I changed it back, and now it's fine.

Please make sure that you have given the app permissions for the new metrics. To do this go to Apple's Settings app and tap Privacy then Health then WorkOutDoors. Check that every switch is enabled, scrolling down to check them all.

In theory iOS should ask you to give these new permissions but sometimes it seems to forget.

That is interesting. I suspect something has changed in the locale system that only affects some people. I'm not sure what is happening, but at least there are a couple of possible fixes: switching the Siri voice or re-sending the settings from the phone app (which may pick up the new locale).

Thank you. Yes, it wasn't turned on, and neither did i get a prompt to turn it on after the update.

I wonder if there is a hole in Apple’s permissions system. WorkOutDoors only requests those permissions if running on watchOS 9 but maybe watchOS only checks if it needs to ask for permissions on the first time a version of an app is run after it is installed.

This would explain why if you installed the latest version on watchOS 8 and then installed watchOS 9 then it doesn’t ask for the permissions. This is just a guess and it may be more complicated and depend on whether the app is run on the phone before the watch, but there does seem to be a scenario where iOS/watchOS forget to ask for new permission.

So if the running metrics are not working for anyone, then please check the health permissions.

Hey guys

Does workoutdoors support paddleboarding ?

I didn't fancy trawling through over 134 pages of information.

Cheers all

Yes. The app has a Paddling activity, which includes paddleboarding according to Apple.

Yes. I’ve used it. Worked great.

Also used WoD on my Ultra for the first time. Worked great. Absolutely no issues.

Sorry if it’s been brought up before, a few searches haven’t found what I’m looking for, but the map on my watch is essentially black and white, instead of the colourful way it always used to be. I’ve tried changing the theme to vivid and there’s no change. See the photo attached.

I’m not sure if this is because I’m using a new Series8? Cheers!

I can't see the photo but this is something that has been reported a few times before and I think is an issue in the watchOS 3D drawing system that the app uses. Usually zooming out and then back in again helps. If not then try rebooting the watch.

Sorry, photo didn’t seem to upload. Rebooting the watch worked perfect - should probably have tried that first! Thanks again Ian, fantastic work as always.

i have what will likely be the stupid question of the day, but basically the only workout i do is outdoor walk. i've worked with computers and software since 1975 and believe me when i say that the programming in your app is up there with the best in any field. bugger to get tweaked up but at least the backups have saved me a couple of times.

anyway, here's the question. i have the new apple ultra with the spiffy new compass features and i was testing the apple workout outdoor walk and wanted to use the compass. it would open, but then shortly returned to the workout. same when i tried to use the compass built into the new wayfarer watch face.

i realize your app has a basic compass feature built in, but what if someone was doing a hike and wanted the breadcrumb and backtrack features of the ultra's compass? is that not possible? tks, /guy

I used WorkOutDoors for a hike today, and used the new Apple compass app with backtrack, at the same time. I had no issue with using both, and displaying whichever one I wanted displayed. Not sure if this is what you are asking. WorkOutDoors already shows breadcrumbs and direction back to start.

tks for the response. i haven't tried opening the compass while wod is running but i'll try that today. and yes i've used the map to backtrack and the apple compass has no link to maps and thus can't be nearly as useful--i've seen people demo'ing it and you just see lines in a void with no context.

after comparing the new workouts in watch os9 to wod i decided to stick with wod. apple puts more metrics on the screen now including a spiffy zones display but i found a way to display zones in wod and the only metrics i need or want are bpm, time, and distance--zones and direction of travel are nice to have, but not essential. and i can get all of that by using two screens in my outdoor walk module on wod thus a compass isn't even needed and that's why i was trying to use the compass while using the apple workout app.

by skimming through this very long thread it looks like the developer is working on other stuff which would be very nice to have like aod and hopefully he can incorporate the apple ultra's new button.

tks agn--appreciate it. /guy

Hello
Since the last update (4.7), the vertical oscillation metric and the ground contact time do not show up on Healthfit (nor apple workout).
Before this version 4.7, everything was ok. (I was on the public beta of watch os 9)
Is it a new limitation of apple not to take this information?
I checked the app settings, and everything should be ok.
Am I the only one with this problem?

thanks

There shouldn't be a problem with running both apps at the same time. I think there are some settings in watchOS that allow you to control what apps appear in the foreground but I have never investigated it. It might be worth looking into the Focus feature.

As @wilberforce says WOD shows breadcrumbs so in theory you should not need to use the compass app for back-tracking.

Glad you like the app!
